Iron Upgrade. What to expect?

Recommended Posts

I recently went through a fitting at Club Champion and decided to go ahead and upgrade my irons. Based on the results of the fitting, I am going from a set of Mizuno JPX-EZ Forged to Callaway Apex Pros.

So here's what I'm wondering. Those of you who have made the jump from irons more in the game improvement category to more of a blade, what are the biggest differences you noticed? And how long did it take you to feel comfortable with your new irons?

Bonus question: if you play the Apex Pros, what are your biggest likes and dislikes?

You should have seen the differences in your fitting. There’s going to be variations from each person but some things that will change are spin, potentially peak height and descent angle. For some turf interaction may change.

Without going down the jacked loft rabbit hole one probably will see a distance change in the iron number on the bottom

mishits will be more penalizing with more of a players iron

Immediately better distance, dispersion, and turf interaction. Much more enjoyable to practice and play.

That sounds good to me! Now I just have to wait until they get in.

If you are a good ball striker then you’ll see a better ball flight, tighter dispersion and nice clean divots.

However if you tend to hit a “clunker” now and then just know that those will be much more penalizing....big loss of distance, wide misses and some skilled shots.

I played with a set of MB irons for a awhile....when I hit them pure there was nothing better! Just get ready for a few stinkers as you get used to them.

I really liked the apex pros they fit well and felt very nice off the face. My only gripe is the black finished looked so good when new, after about 20 rounds they look like trash. They play well no problems but to me the finish is a big part of looking down at my clubs.

I went from Taylormade Burners to JPX 900 Tours. Better feedback, better distance dispersion (when hitting it clean; I definitely got some hot balls with the taylormade which drove me crazy), definitely cuts through the turf better, feel like i can get better contact on the ball in the rough (maybe a little subjective), I also took practice more seriously with wanting to try and live up to the better irons.

I've played a few rounds now with them and I agree, they feel great off the face. That's good to know about the black finish. I really liked the look of those but ended up going chrome, but now I don't regret that decision

I went from M2’s to iBlades. The feedback on shots was what I noticed the most. It’s much easier with blade-type irons to feel where you’re hitting the ball on the face. I’ve found that’s very helpful in understanding your swing and ball flight.

I played with a set of Rogues for a year or two because of a back injury - couldn’t turn fully so needed help getting the ball in the air. When things were getting back to normal, I couldn’t stop them from going up to the moon with every shot. I could hit them from level with by back foot and they still went into space. When my ball speed returned, I switched back to an x forged/apex mb combo set and can now control trajectory etc, Didn’t see any loss in distance (though I am swinging faster now, but the player’s irons are plenty long enough) and the feeling when you hit either type in this combo set is incomparable.
