StrawberryShortCake
Last week I experimented with not using tees off the block unless it was my driver. I'm not sure if it's in my head but I'm playing much better without teeing it up. More consistent and better controll of the ball flight. Any of you guys not using tees? ZenGolfer
Ive experimented with it from time to time but always go back to using a tee. Someone once asked Jack Nicklaus whether or not he tees it up on a par 3 and he said something along the lines of how the tee box is the only place where you can give yourself a perfect lie, so why wouldnt you tee it? I use a tee but I tee it very low, so that the ball is just barely off the ground. I find that if I tee it too high, I will catch the ball high on the face and it reduces the spin and distance. Hey, whatever works for you though. If you prefer hitting it off the ground, go with that. sirchunksalot, jtpeele, GolfSpy_SHARK and 2 others 5 Quote "I suppose its better to be a master of 7 than to be vaguely familiar with 14." - Chick Evans Whats in my Sun Mountain 2.5+ stand bag? tony@CIC
I think using a tee provides an advantage on par 3's as it helps me adjust the flight of the ball. I do play with guys who don't. GolfSpy_SHARK
Always use a tee, for me it’s mental I know even though if I’m hitting anything but driver I’m using a small tee and it’s very low to the ground...I know that I am not going to chunk or skull it. Miss hit maybe but I know I’m going to get it out there. i would rather use the small tee and lose a little bit of distance but drastically increase my contact. GolfSpy BOS
I always use one off the tee. revkev I can’t find the video right now but I’ll update later if I can. There was a guy (I think on the European Tour) that would tee up the ball like he was going to hit driver and instead would smash 4 iron stingers off the tee. It was crazy to see him hit it so low off a high tee. DaveP043
2 minutes ago, Shankster said: Faldo says we should ban the Tee altogether... I think we would see a radical change in driver technology. I think Faldo suggested that for the top professional tours only, to attempt to limit distance increases. I think the OP is talking more about non-driver shots. For those, it would be easy enough to use the Laura Davies method to elevate the ball just slightly above the remainder of the turf. tony@CIC 1 Quote Irons Titleist T200, AMT Red stiff Rogue SubZero, GD YS-Six X T22 54 and 58 wedges 7-wood 5-wood B60 G5i putter Right handed Reston, Virginia
Shankster
People would just go back to grass tees like Laura Davies uses. I’ve had to do that inadvertently once for an entire round. I always forget to buy tees. For whatever reason I could not find any broken or left tees anywhere... it was close to opening day.Hats off to that grounds crew for keeping the place clean. silver & black, tony@CIC and cnosil
juspoole
I typically will use one off the tee. I saw a test by the TXG guys and it seemed like small misses on the thin or toe side were a bit when using a tee. Just maintained a bit more launch overall. For a hybrid or 3 wood, I tend to not hit as down as much so I have less spin on the ball and my carry and total distances are a bit farther. Whatever is working for you, I would not overthink it. This game makes us all overthink enough as it is! tony@CIC 1 Quote Driver: Mavrik Sub Zero 9* (Set to 10) Ventus Blue 6X 2 Hybrid: TSI3 Hybrid Tensei Blue 80 X (17.25*) 3 Hybrid 818 H2 Hybrid Hzrdus RDX Black 6.5 (20.5*) 4 Iron - T200 4 Iron Graphite Design Tour AD IZ X Hybrid Shaft Irons 5-PW: T100-S 5 - GW KBS Tour 130 X Gap/Sand Wedge: Vokey SM6 49* SM8 54* Lob Wedge: Jaws 5 Wedge 58* DG Tour Issue Stiff Putter: Phantom 5.5 34" Pro Platinum Newport 2 35" Taylormade Tour Black Spider 34"
TR1PTIK
For irons and wedges, I tend not to use a tee. There are situations where I may opt for a tee - say the turf conditions on the box are horrendous or on a day when I feel less confident with my irons. Almost always use a tee for the fairway and hybrid. heavygolffeels
Always use a tee when you can. Some people tee up way to high with irons and wedge though. Subconsciously make you swing up at the ball which is a recipe for disastrous thin shots. Tee it low and the strike is meant to be the same as if the ball were in the fairway. golfingbrock
I only use a tee with driver. Haven't used with an iron on par 3's or laying up in years. Decided to try a tee with a hybrid on a 230 par 3 a couple weeks ago and topped it in the water. Dropped on the tee box and hit it again to 15 feet. Also no tee for 3 wood off tee. I realize a tee creates a 'perfect lie' and you should give yourself a perfect lie every chance you get, but the look and feel isn't right for me. I need the turf interaction for solid contact. Almost totally agree. I will not use a tee unless it is a driver, a tee shot with 3 wood (when driver is a bit too much due to short fairway/dogleg but could use an extra 5-10 yards on my Normal 3 wood), and lastly when 3 wood is too much and a stock 3i isn’t enough (my stock 3i goes about 210 ish on average, but off a tee I can push it to 235).All other shots are off the deck since that is what I practice 99% of the time with those clubs. I give up a little distance, but gain consistency which is way more important.
