RobotDoctor
For those who are Persimmon wood collectors, what are you looking for to add to your collection? My target is simple, early 50s MacGregor pro line woods. My target is MacGregor 693s, 945s, M43s, M85s and M09 LFFs. I've been able to collect these as sets and a 1952/1953 LFF. I also have a set of 1954 Toney Penna TP Specials. I am also partial to Wood Brothers Persimmon (when Dave Wood was part of Wood Brothers). I have one WB Texan driver made for Gene Sauers. The only woods I might add are the coveted 1954 Toney Penna WW Specials (full set or any individual wood) or a WB Texan that a good friend just purchased. At this point I'm nearly done with my collection. That's my target woods. What's yours. NRJyzr
I find I'm not really a collector. I'm just acquiring woods that interest me. I have a thing for Ram clubs, so many of my pickups have been Ram persimmons. I nabbed an unhit MacGregor John Deere Commemorative off eBay, because I thought it would be interesting to score something unhit. I picked up my M09T Jumbo reissue at 2nd Swing, saw it sitting in the Misc driver rack and was intrigued. And so on. Some of my clubs have been in less than ideal shape, but I've been ok with that; those particular clubs were bought for use instead of display. Late last year, picked up the Orlimars in my signature, being NOS, they could have gone either direction, decided to play them. They got on my radar from a random search, I liked the look, heard good buzz, etc. I haven't figured out if this is due to my not having paid attention to golf during the years when there was only persimmon, and not having been exposed to the legendary status of some clubs, or if it's just my nature. <shrug> Edited June 5, 2020 by NRJyzr Autocorrect, yay! deejaid and RobotDoctor 2 Quote Driver: TM Original One 11.5* set to 11*, Aldila NV75 X, 43.5" -or- SpeedZone, HZRDUS Black 75 6.5, 43.5" 3w: Cobra King LTD, RIP Beta 90, 42" -or- Stage 2 Tour, NV105 X, 42.5" 2h or 3h: TaylorMade Stage 2 Tour, Aldila NV105 S -or- RIP Alpha 105 S Irons: 3-PW Mizuno MP37, Recoil Proto 125 F4 (reshaft in progress, slowly); 1i & 3-PW Golden Ram TW276, NV105 S; 2-PW Golden Ram TW282, RIP Tour 115 R GW: Dynacraft Dual Milled CNC 52*, Steelfiber 125 S; Scratch 8620 DS 53*, Steelfiber 125 S SW: Ram TG-898 56*, DGX ss2x; Ram Tom Watson 55*, DGX ss2x; Wilson Staff PMP 58*, DGS; PM Grind 19 58*, stock shaft Putter: Snake Eyes Viper Tour Sv1, 34"; Ping Scottsdale TR Craz-E, 35"; Cleveland Huntington Beach 1, 35" Ball: Wilson Staff Duo Professional, Bridgestone Tour B-RXS, Callaway Chrome Soft

RobotDoctor
Here are a few of my persimmon woods in the following posts. This one is my MacGregor M85W I just got earlier this year and had Dave Wood restore. Dave is responsible for the old company Wood Brothers and for the restoration of many famous persimmon woods. Namely Ben Crenshaw's M85W and Greg Norman's M43T gamed in the 80s. Both of these classic MacGregors went on to win major championships. Dave told me Crenshaw's M85W is an excellent driver. He said mine is reminiscent of Crenshaw's but on a different plateau than Ben's. He said in 50 years of restoring MacGregors this was probably the best M85W he's ever seen. Gotta love that level of praise. aerospace_ray, deejaid, sirchunksalot and 2 others 5 Quote Driver: TaylorMade 300 Mini 11.5° (10.2°), Fujikura Ventus Blue 5S Velocore 3W: TaylorMade M4 15°, Graphite Design Tour AD DI 7S Hybrid: TaylorMade Sim2 2 Iron Hybrid 17°, Mitsubishi Tensai AV Raw Blue 80 stiff Irons: Mizuno 223 4-PW, Nippon Modus3 Tour 120 stiff GW / LW: Scratch Golf 1018 forged 50°/ 58° DS, Nippon Modus3 Tour 120 stiff SW: Callaway MD5 Jaws 54°, TT DG Tour Issue S200 115g wedge shaft Putter: Byron Morgan DH89 GSS custom, Salty MidPlus cork grip Grips: BestGrips Augusta Microperf leather slip on

RobotDoctor
This is my 1953 MacGregor Tommy Armour 945W set (1-4) that I just purchased earlier this year. These were restored last by the late Barry Willett but they will be restored by Dave Wood next year. I owned a set of these back in the late 90s but traded them away for a first generation Scotty Cameron TeI3 Santa Fe. Would have been a good trade had I never used it and still owned it. RobotDoctor
My collection is starting to come together. I have moved several pieces/sets and have concentrated on a few classic MacGregor models and a handful of others. I still have to have several woods restored but that is a project for the next year or two. What is missing in my bag are a set of MacGregor 945W EOM fairway woods (2-4) and a custom order MacGregor Tommy Armour M43T that was just restored. The M43T is a rare piece that was most likely made for a MacGregor staff member or club pro (which MacGregor catered to back in the day). This information comes from a very authentic source who knows MacGregor woods extremely well. RobotDoctor
I have one M43T that was in pretty good condition (previously restored) but the insert somehow was never reset and had come loose. That warranted a refinish to reset the insert and restain/redo paint fill for this driver. Here are before (pre refinish) and after pics (courtesy of Dave Wood). I decided that one of the M43Ts have burnt umber scoring lines (gold paintfill on crown and sole stamps). Dave chose this wood to be burnt umber and my other M43T as white scoring lines. aerospace_ray 1 Quote Driver: TaylorMade 300 Mini 11.5° (10.2°), Fujikura Ventus Blue 5S Velocore 3W: TaylorMade M4 15°, Graphite Design Tour AD DI 7S Hybrid: TaylorMade Sim2 2 Iron Hybrid 17°, Mitsubishi Tensai AV Raw Blue 80 stiff Irons: Mizuno 223 4-PW, Nippon Modus3 Tour 120 stiff GW / LW: Scratch Golf 1018 forged 50°/ 58° DS, Nippon Modus3 Tour 120 stiff SW: Callaway MD5 Jaws 54°, TT DG Tour Issue S200 115g wedge shaft Putter: Byron Morgan DH89 GSS custom, Salty MidPlus cork grip Grips: BestGrips Augusta Microperf leather slip on
RobotDoctor
This M43T was one I saw potential with and took a gamble. Dave Wood agreed to take this one in for a full restoration. A pristine sole plate was sourced and Dave replaced the insert with period appropriate brick paper fiber insert material. Dave said this driver had the profile and shape of Greg Norman's M43T he gamed back in the 80s and early 90s. Norman's driver was a complete solid block (no lead whatsoever) while mine only has a small skirt weight (no lead under the sole plate). I am very pleased with how this driver came out. This one was done with white scoring lines and gold crown and sole stamp paint fill. The last picture is of the sole plate that was used as a donor. This M43T had some major toe damage that was repaired with epoxy and the sole stamps redone at some point (wrong font). The sacrifice of this M43T was for the greater good. The 693 sole plate was replaced with one in better condition. While the screws lined up perfectly, the shaft cut out didn't. Dave added some metal solder to bridge it. He simply has mad man skills!!! SundayBag
Maybe someone can help me out here. I am trying to figure out where this MacGregor T 945 Eye-O-Matic 12 degree. The club is in amazing shape but I can't find one like it on the internet. The "1" is a single line unlike a lot of other drivers, but I also don't see too many that are 12 degree. Maybe you all know something, or if you make me an offer, I'd rather see it go to a diehard collector than on eBay. Thanks in advance for any feedback!
