JohnSmalls
This is an interesting one. I picked up this shaft second hand, had a cobra adapter put on it and played it for maybe 36 holes last summer. Got into a bit of a funk, changed back to the stock shaft, then changed drivers and now I’m back to the Cobra. This shaft was stored safely in a golf bag and then later in a closet away from everything. All this to say, the shaft hasn’t been abused—and it wasn’t abused when it was in play (no chunks, no driver off the deck, nothing). In my tinkering mind I wanted to give it a go again for comparison sake since the cobra is back in the bag and I noticed what looks like the shaft splintering going into the adapter. Have you guys seen this before? What would cause it? RickyBobby_PR
Looks like the shaft cracked somewhere and it’s staring to break apart. jaskanski
It happens more often than you think. Check it out... JohnSmalls
edteergolf
very small chance this was caused by over prepping the shaft. most likely it has been damaged just under the ferrule and the shaft had the damage while you played with it and over time it has peeled away. it is done and the shaft should be replaced. JohnSmalls
Thanks, fellas! I'll be on the lookout for a replacement. aerospace_ray
I have seen this many times over the years with graphite shafts. Most likely due to over prep work on the tip/ferrule area. Additionally I have had people ask me to re shaft clubs where this occurred from bag shatter (irons bumping into taller woods in a loose top golf bag, dropping the club and stepping on the shaft slightly and/or throwing the club. In some cases where its a mild splinter, have wrapped small-tight piece of black electrical tape and that worked fine until the shaft could be replaced. Ultimately the shaft should be replaced. Grit Golf
From my own experience, those splinters usually start when a shaft is tip trimmed (or butt cut) with a hacksaw instead of an abrasive wheel. The force of a handsaw can push pull and eventually separate a few clumps of CF that were laid up longitudinally, which causes the splinters. It usually happens on the bottom of the cut before the saw exits, that was a “learned the hard way” for me kind of thing.I’m sure there’s other ways that can happen, but that’s how I’ve seen it start.
