I have to double check... but I think it was 6 FW, 11 GIR and 3 burgers(x2).... so 6 + 11 + 6 = 23.  If I’m doing that right.

What a stunning summer morning.  This week the competition is all about FW and GIR so I went to the course with a different mindset than I normally do.  I was going to aim for the fat part of the fairway (within reason) and the middle back of the green on approaches.  All I have to say is damn... I might have to play that way more often.  Or maybe it was just the extra focus knowing that the real games have begun.

Here’s a link to my instagram post with some photos and videos of todays action:

And onto some key highlights:

New/Tied Personal Bests:

Score: 75 (+3)

Arccos Handicap: 5.8

Birdies: 4 (ties my personal best)

Long Drive:  317 yards

Fairways Hit - 6/14 (43%) - ties baseline

Greens in Reg - 11/18 (61%) vs 8/18 in baseline

I’m ecstatic with this start but I’m still wanting to get those Fairway Hit numbers higher for this week’s challenge.  I should have one more opportunity to get 18 holes in, but I know my competitors will be giving it their all too!

I’ll end this post with a photo of the 17th green, a par 3.  The Forged Tec irons have been REALLY solid for me on par 3’s... I’ve been getting a lot of quality birdie looks out of them which is not usual for me.  Hopefully more good rounds to come!

I fully expect the 6 and 11 to be NOT good enough to win this week. So 75 or not... I know I have more work to do!

How is the ARCCOS system used in this challenge?  Are testers able to review and edit the data for rounds prior to entering them into the database? I just used my Shotscope V2 in the "GPS + Trac" mode for the first time today.  It had a handful of my clubs incorrect and several putts incorrect - though that was my bad as I forgot to record the putt.  It also showed me putting a couple of times when I was on the apron - which recorded as a GIR.  Really like the watch and it and the software is easy to use.  Just got to remember to record putts and pin.

I know ARCCOS has a putter tag but is it similar in this regards to other minor deviations?

Lastly, what's the background story on how a FIR+GIR=Burger? 🤔

Yeah, that sounds pretty similar to my results, some minor errors here and there, but I correct those once I get home, and we all correct them before we submit our scores for the week.

Those aren’t that bad (for the rest of us). Haha

I know the kid has some sickeningly low rounds in there. And it sounds like he was starting to get in a groove at the end of his round.

Did you opt for different clubs than normal?  I know if I was playing a FIR & GIR contest, there are a handful of holes on the two courses I play that I would play different clubs off the tee. That kind of begs the question "why not always do that if the odds of success is better"... because I play Tim Allen golf .
giphy.gif

Yes. A lot more 5 wood and hybrids. Normally I would hit driver if there wasn’t a worry of runout. Today I was paying more attention to bunkers and where the fairway narrowed and I was a lot more focused on the start line.

It wasn’t so much as to leave myself with 200 yards out or anything like that. But I did get more selective off the tee.

The real difference maker for me was aiming to the middle back of the green. That was certainly key to hitting 11 of them. I was only short sided once in the rough and that was because of a bounding ball that took some big bounces. I was looking towards the fat part of the green because I feel my putting is strong enough to score well. I was definitely rewarded for that with the 4 birdies and 6 one-putts.

As a ShotScope v2 owner, I will say that it seems to be more likely to miss shots than Arccos if you don't remember to always get a good hefty practice swing in to wake up the tag/watch. I would take pretty healthy practice cuts even when chipping.

Arccos generally gets everything close to right, but I still track score on The Grint alongside Arccos for this very reason. For example, yesterday Arccos only missed a single shot (a delicate open-faced chip from one of the low-lying fairway grass bunkers near the green - Links style course). But, Arccos originally credited me with way too many fairways hit. There were several holes where I was a yard or two into the rough, so I had to go back and correct stuff for this competition. There were at least three holes where this was the case (which I assume is caused by the GPS and mapping not being quite accurate enough).

I had no intention of using this round for the challenge this week, so I played my normal strategy, which included mapping the course out on Google Earth Pro and picking clubs and lines based on estimated dispersion (shot cone) with each club at certain distances since I hadn't played this course in a few months. Had to adjust a bit for wind (15 MPH sustained), but it worked out well. I didn't strike my irons particularly well off of the tee, but because I made smart decisions in terms of aim line, I got away with it for the most part. The only exception being the two par 3s on the front where I had to take drops/retee because I hooked my first shots into oblivion.

Hey the ball only listens off the tee or fairway....putting not so much. I definitely assisted him with a little verbal help. Sometimes the ball needs a little more abuse like this:

Yes we edit as needed.  Especially for Pin locations and such.  Like @GB13 I have had a few shots register as rough/fairway/bunker depending on how close I was to them and needed to adjust.  I also will use my putter a lot from the fringe and it usually reads that as being on the green so I'll change the first putt to a chip with the putter.

Thanks, and yes... he will root in the ball.  But usually when he says nice putt its 3 feet before it lips out or comes up just short.  🤣

In the interest of transparency, since @GB13 and @B.Boston have been so kind to post their round stats, I'll join the fun:

Eight fairways, nine greens, five burgers.

Hoping to get two more rounds in for this week's challenge and best those numbers.

And at a course that's imperative to keep it in the short grass! Well done 👏

Thanks! Just unfortunately I botched both par 3s on the front, and had a few too many three-putts. Greens were dried out and lightning fast. On No. 15 I three-putted from inside of four feet. 😱

The SpeedZones seem to just wanna go straight, regardless of whether I try to cut or draw them. I wonder if the rails are keeping the club head from twisting through the turf?

It's my understanding that they are to help in rough lies, but perhaps they also work like a keel on a boat.  They are quite pronounced - more so than most other fairway woods I've seen.  Straight is good in most situations, so I'd be happy with that.  I have the G400 SFT in 3w & 5w and they are designed for straight flight.  I can work then a little but not much without over exaggerating stance and hand position; which usually does not end well 😬.

True, I have to exaggerate my stance and hand position to cut and draw the ball with my old hybrids. I can probably pull off the shot I need 75% of the time with the other 25% going straight as an arrow in the direction I was aiming. There is nothing wrong with straight and long, will take it every time, just need to understand what I can & can't do with each of the clubs.

Being in the market for a 4 hybrid (maybe), anybody have any thoughts on how they actually do out of the rough?  Do the rails actually work for their intended purpose?

Just the weather, I think. You can kind of see in my picture, but the whole course was pretty baked out, tee boxes included. We've had such a dry summer compared to last.

I've taken less of a divot with all the Cobra clubs so far.  I do think that the rails help keep you from digging in too much and getting caught up in the rough.  I just need to find a way to keep it from going left on me 🤦‍♂️ but that's not exclusive to Cobra hybrids.

I’ve not really had any issue out of the rough, I do really like the rails on both the 3W and hybrid, it’s nice to have a little bit of a “chunk guard”. Obviously they won’t help extremely bad shots, but with shots that are a little bit fat, it really still saves some good distance.

They have adjustability of lie and loft as well as weighting. I have hit these clubs at my fitting and one range session and one competitive round and one weekly (with buddies) round. My initial impression is that the Cobra SpeedZone Driver and Fairway metals are comparable to my current gamers Titleist TS2 Driver and 15* 3 metal. I have not used a 5-fairway metal in many years, opting for strong lofted hybrid clubs. During my fitting for the Cobra SpeedZoneOne clubs we found the SpeedZoneONE 4 hybrid the perfect transition club to the SpeedZoneONE 5 – SW. This will be interesting seeing how I have been gaming TS2 driver and 15*F and Titleist 818H 19*, 23*, 27* transition to 6 – PW with 3 Vokey wedges. I’m extremely impressed with the 5 metal at this point and I hit it slightly farther and straighter than I hit a 19* hybrid. The low profile and split rails allow me to hit the 5 metal out of semi-rough as well as fairway conditions. I like the look and feel of all three woods and will give them a fair shot at staying in my bag.

CCC4 OFFICIAL WOODS REVIEW

Preface

Its time to go long or go home!! We’re starting out with a bang (or should I say bomb!). Let’s  review the big sticks! As a reminder, I’m gaming the SZ 9° driver, the SZ 3 wood and SZ 3 hybrid. All of these are Tour Length, which is making quite a positive impact on my game.

Well, I’d be upset if my first sentence didn’t include the word speed, because, let’s face it, Cobra has built their big sticks around speed. Do they live up to the hype? Read on and find out!

7AB3414A-F3BE-4FDE-8C65-13D3FA154F97.jpeg.df6f0cd2c0ea9d8669e98071a667ad1a.jpeg

Looks

These are hands down some of the best looking woods on the market. I absolutely love the matte white color. That said, I really wish I could’ve matched my hybrid with the driver and 3 wood. Yes, I know that’s mainly my OCD talking, but still... That small complaint aside, the matte carbon fiber crown, the white accent, with the red weights creates a beautiful and classy looking club. Coming from the *ahem* very red Wilson Staff C300, the Cobras are an improvement in almost every way.

D2F96669-99E8-470D-9C55-B0D30550067F.jpeg.f4820493cf50c7402b27607f89f28ad4.jpeg

Looks - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5/5 stars

Sound & Feel

This section is always the one I struggle with the most. It’s just so hard to quantify something so subjective, and then adequately explain it. @edingc did a wonderful job with his videos demonstrating the sound of the SZ. (Credit where credit is due.) I also can’t better describe the feelings of the driver and 3 wood. As he said, the driver has a very nice, reverberating, crack to it, while the 3W has a more solid thwack when flushed, but feels a little hollow when mishit. I’ll also say the hybrid sounds & feels a little “pingy” and rather hollow.

E29AEE7F-26F6-4384-9DCD-03F50E525C1E.jpeg.3de0b89bd3a4115ea1e668fb5e905429.jpeg

Sound & Feel - ⭐⭐⭐ 3/5 stars (To break it down, the driver would be 5/5, the 3W is 3/5 and the hybrid is 2/5.)

Performance

For all the talk about looks, sound, and feel, this is the section that really, really matters. I’m a bit conflicted about this section, because, my good shots, are very, very good. My strikes are more consistently near the middle of the face, but I’m struggling with an ugly left miss with both the driver and 3W. I’ll say this, the SZ is rather forgiving when it comes to ball speed. This shot was hit well off the toe, still ended up being really good.

914B2911-9EAB-427F-82FB-6FF4A88C2DDA.png.0ac80dcb9d13eb69a8f1c41045371f74.png

Not to mention, this driver has produced some absolute BOMBS! I just need this to happen more frequently!

2B375802-D952-4C83-BB9B-CE97161E4BBF.png.bde23df682b93ce4a297e9cf7dae89e6.png

The hybrid has been a go to club of mine since it has joined my bag, it’s super consistent, very forgiving, and most importantly, isn’t going left!! I’m really loving the hybrid right now, very easy to hit out of any lie, and surprisingly workable.

Overall, my distance is up, my overall fairways hit is up, but my misses are much uglier. I dunno how to grade that, so I’ll give it 4 stars.

Performance - ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5 stars

Play it OR Trade it

Can I get a time extension on this question? I’m just not sure yet. Arccos says my driving handicap is going down, so I guess that’s good, but dang, I’m just not comfortable with the driver and 3W yet. If I can start making more good swings, then these might be in the bag for a long time. The hybrid will probably be staying for a while, it might be on a rotation schedule with my 2 iron depending on wind and corse conditions.

I’m going with 3 stars for now, however, hopefully with some time this rating can and will increase.

Play it OR Trade it - ⭐⭐⭐ 3/5 stars

Overall

These are very good clubs, don’t let my uncertain review convince you otherwise. These can compete with any of the bigger companies woods. I’m just fighting my swing a bit right now, and it just isn’t translating into confidence. I’ll provide more follow up about these in a few weeks when I have a few more rounds under my belt. But for now, I’ll give the 3 stars, with and asterisk denoting massive potential.

Overall - ⭐⭐⭐ 3/5 stars

how do you think the matte white on the bottom will hold up on the 3w against grass, dirt etc?  I'm wondering if it will remain fairly clean after repeated use.
