how do you think the matte white on the bottom will hold up on the 3w against grass, dirt etc?  I'm wondering if it will remain fairly clean after repeated use.

MDGolfHacker

As long as you wipe it down, it seems to hold up fine. When it gets a bit dirty, a wet towel easily does the trick.

Yup. I’ve noticed more tee marks than usual on all the clubs, but they wipe off with a wet towel and a little effort.

Being fairways hit week; did any of you consider going for the Cobra KING Utility iron instead of a fairway wood or hybrid?

Like most people I've had issues with my F9 hybrids hooking off the tee.  I get plenty of distance out of them but they aren't really a true fairway finder when I'm not sure if it's going straight or hooking 30+ yards left.  I'm curious to see if the utility iron would help out with excessive draws.

Timely question as I mentioned this in the woods review I’ll be posting soon. I kind of wish the utility’s has been out and available as an option since I’ve never used one before, but I do feel like it would be a good middle ground between the hybrid and stock long iron off the tee.

The SpeedZone 4 Iron is about as close to the driving iron as I can get. I used it a ton from the tee yesterday.

I tried a few more balls with the 2 hybrid warming up yesterday and promptly put it back in the bag. Just need more practice with it before I could ever try to use it off the tee.

Oddly have noticed more tee marks on my irons as well, but overall they all come off with a little elbow grease.

Do you find that the split rails really help when in deep rough?

MDGolfHacker

I have hit the hybrid out of the deep rough if the lie is not too poor, and I definitely think they help to cut through the grass. I play mostly bermuda grass down here in South Texas and if the rough is let to grow too deep your not going to be able to advance the ball no matter what club you have in your hands.

We get some courses with much deeper rough than in this video and then your just dead meat.

That’s a good question, coming from a utility iron, I’m happy I tried the hybrid and fairly happy with the results. That said I hit 50% of fairway with the hybrid as opposed to 65% with the iron. However, the hybrid is much more forgiving and less of a specialized tee club. I lose a lot less distance on mishits than I did with the iron. I think they really both have a very realistic role in the bag. I don’t see it being a one or the other type thing.

Yes more often than not.  It requires me to make a swing that feels more slice or push to hit it straight.  Keep in mind that's a lot of range swings and only 3 hits off the tee...

But even then you can see two were way left and that one on the fairway was a push which was almost too far right.

That's interesting, and one of the reasons I didn't get along with a lot of hybrids until I found my CBX 119...a lot of lefts. Just a guess but it seems to me that in an effort to make them easier to hit, too much offset gets baked in.

Being in the market for a 4 hybrid (maybe), anybody have any thoughts on how they actually do out of the rough?  Do the rails actually work for their intended purpose?

I just don't think I have enough on-course experience with the hybrids, yet, to make a recommendation. If you're not in a hurry and can follow along a little longer I think we will be able to give you a better recommendation after a few more rounds under real world conditions.

I had issues with the lefts when I owned a BioCell hybrid a couple years back, and when I tried a buddy's F8 and F9 hybrids as well, so was curious to know whether the newest models still had that bias. I've had better luck with Titleist & Callaway hybrids being more fade-biased, and I know there are others like the Ping & CBX that are known to be less hooky.

Ha. I know the feeling. I have a TS2 hybrid at 18° and it does take some getting used it. It’s one of those ... it looks like a wood, but my setup is an iron stance ... and we’re unsure of which swing to use.

For me, I figured out that if I use my typical driver, fw type of take away (low and slow) and then the sweeping follow through ... I’ve noticed it helps and works for me.

Haven’t really had hook/strong draw issues with hybrids, just more of topping the ball and poor setup/ball placement has been my problem.

TEAM HAMMER COBRA SPEEDZONE WOODS REVIEW

logo.gif.9c03e834d648cae5bba1ad1739de8d98.gif

This week we are providing our initial thoughts on the Cobra SpeedZone Woods. As a reminder here is my SpeedZone wood line-up.

OnlineWoods.JPG.6866753fbf27f183f1956fea56c4808a.JPG

The Cobra SpeedZone Driver is the first adjustable driver I’ve owned and while I have not got it totally dialed in yet it is 10-yards longer, in its current configuration, than my previous driver. My previous driver avg was 232 yds and with the Cobra I’m at 242 yds. I plan to get time on TrackMan and see which loft, lie, bias configuration is best for my swing and do an A-B comparison with my old driver. I will post those results here at a later date.

Driver.png.10036ed3b17fb59af7aa8f712d064025.png

To date, the Cobra 3 Wood is my favorite club in the set. Not only do I hit it as long as I hit my previous driver, but it is much easier to hit off the deck than my Cleveland HiBore 3 wood. I’ve actually been using it more on shorter par 4’s than the driver because it’s a fairway finder and sometimes it’s better to be in the short stuff than closer to the green in the thick stuff.

3Wood.png.227e00f4f078e02e345ef2316c9db37c.png

I haven’t really hit the hybrids that much on course as of yet, but at the range they go long & straight. Straight can sometime be a problem for me as I used my previous hybrids to get out of trouble. I could easily bend them left or right around trees that were blocking the green. The SpeedZones seem to just wanna go straight, regardless of whether I try to cut or draw them. I wonder if the rails are keeping the club head from twisting through the turf?

SUMMARY

LOOKS:

1953335054_5stars.png.dd26c4c1b896becfe3b469531a4d6a08.png

I love the black, red & yellow color scheme on the SpeedZones, the look is “fast” standing still, much like a Ferrari or Lamborghini. The matching head covers and bag really complete the look and make it one sexy bag of sticks.

SOUND & FEEL:

1643270534_4.5stars.png.66936ea009a852dec765151707d6a1d0.png

The sound of the driver is quite different from the familiar “ping” of my Callaway driver. I’d say it’s like a hollow dull thud with the driver and the sound doesn’t change much on off-center hits. The 3 wood has a more traditional sound when struck and the feel when you flush one is magical!

MISCELLANEOUS:

4-Stars.png.7d1a46aaef3ded726aa163972510ec2b.png

The adjustable head on the driver & 3 wood moves the logos on the grip & shaft around the club head which is a little distracting. This is not a huge issue and would be less noticeable with a solid color grip. My Lamkin Sonar grips, however, have finger placement marking to help take a consistent grip on the club and they are now at the 2:00 position.

PLAY IT OR TRADE IT:

1953335054_5stars.png.dd26c4c1b896becfe3b469531a4d6a08.png

I’m already seeing improved distances, which is leading to less and less hybrids and more short irons on approach shots helping my scoring. I’ve recorded 2 birdies in each of my last 2 rounds, on 2 different courses. I can’t tell you how many years it’s been since I accomplished that feat!

He’ll of a review (love the picture layout). “Magical” is a great description of that driver glad you’re loving the 3 wood!

I've never hit a utility iron so I can't really say. However, as long as the SpeedZone 5 iron is, if I had the 4 iron I would feel confident hitting that off the tee 195-200 in the middle of fairway for this challenge.

TXG did a good video about Hybrids and hooks

This video was what led me on my quest to find an anti-left hybrid. I already have an in-to--out swing path that sometimes gets WAY too inside, and the amount of "left" built into hybrids just left me feeling I couldn't ever find one. Anything with a lie angle adjustment was on my list to try, and I happened to find a new CLK on eBay for a steal of a price so I scooped it up since it has the flattest stock lie angle. I have a really hard time turning it over -- it's great for someone like me.

Anyways, that was a huge off-topic comment. Back to business. What the hell are these "burgers" you guys are referring to? I missed that somewhere in the thread.

Sole. Could just be my imagination as I realized that on the range I've been using wood tees and on the course I use almost exclusively plastic...

I hadn't really been to the range much this year, so maybe it's all in my head.

I can confirm the white painted wood tees do leave marks on the matte finish.

Not sure if we ever clarified, but the scoring setup is basically one point for fairway hit, one point for green hit, and then the FIR/GIR "burger" (hitting both on the same hole) is worth two points.

Then, there's some Arccos handicap dividing going on that gets factored in to the score to determine the winner of the challenge.

What a stunning summer morning.  This week the competition is all about FW and GIR so I went to the course with a different mindset than I normally do.  I was going to aim for the fat part of the fairway (within reason) and the middle back of the green on approaches.  All I have to say is damn... I might have to play that way more often.  Or maybe it was just the extra focus knowing that the real games have begun.

Here’s a link to my instagram post with some photos and videos of todays action:

And onto some key highlights:

New/Tied Personal Bests:

Score: 75 (+3)

Arccos Handicap: 5.8

Birdies: 4 (ties my personal best)

Long Drive:  317 yards

Fairways Hit - 6/14 (43%) - ties baseline

Greens in Reg - 11/18 (61%) vs 8/18 in baseline

I’m ecstatic with this start but I’m still wanting to get those Fairway Hit numbers higher for this week’s challenge.  I should have one more opportunity to get 18 holes in, but I know my competitors will be giving it their all too!

I’ll end this post with a photo of the 17th green, a par 3.  The Forged Tec irons have been REALLY solid for me on par 3’s... I’ve been getting a lot of quality birdie looks out of them which is not usual for me.  Hopefully more good rounds to come!
