TEAM HAMMER COBRA WEDGE REVIEW

After discussing how I use my wedges with the lead fitter at Cobra, the suggestion was to select the 54* MIM Wedge with the versatile grind & the 60* MIM Wedge with the widelow grind. It was a bit surprised that many of us received the same wedges with the same grinds considering our varying skill levels.

 

In the event you were unaware, MIM stands for Metal Injection Molding, a process Cobra uses to create a club that is said to have more even grain structure that leads to a softer feel than cast or forged wedges.

 

I’ve always had a challenge hitting specialty wedges consistently and played a 56* wedge with a traditional club shape for years, until I discovered the Callaway PM Grind wedge. The Callaway totally changed my view & confidence in the short game. I feel confident hitting every shot in the book with the Callaway and putting it away for this competition was my biggest trepidation.

ON-COURSE PERFORMANCE: 

 

I’ve had a lot of duffs with the 60* from around the green and I’ve also left a couple balls in the sand, something I’ve not done with the PM grind since I’ve owned it. My distance has been all over the board with the 60* and I think the weighting of the club is what throws off my ability to develop any type of touch with the club.

Looking at the wear pattern on the MIM 60* shows the area from the 1st to the 9^th groove getting the most action, while my PM wedge shows wear in the 1^st-4^th groove. From that I deduce that I am hitting the MIM higher on the face than the PM wedge. What does that mean? Hell, if I know. Here is a comparison of my PM wedge and the MIM 60. 

I’ve only had the 54 for a week and only have 1 short practice session and one round in with it so I don’t think it’s really fair to pass judgement on it yet. 

 

LOOKS: 

I like the design aesthetic of the MIMs, they are very attractive wedges. The black color with KING snake branding and the MIM logo looks great in the bag. Badging & branding aside, to my eye they look chunky and that visual becomes very mental when I am trying to pick the ball off a tight lie or to get the under the ball in the bunker. In addition, my PM grind’s grooves go all the way to the edge of the club, while the Cobra grooves follow a more traditional pattern, again this probably more mental than a functional advantage.

SOUND & FEEL: 

 

 

The MIM wedges feel heavy to me and, in fact, they are a D5 while my PM is a D4. That weight difference feels like it is all in the head, while the Callaway feels like the weight is more evenly distributed throughout the club. Does the MIM process make the wedges feel softer than my Callaway wedge? No, actually my Callaway wedge feels much softer than the Cobras. The ball also sounds less clunky coming off the PM than the Cobras. Again, I’ll caveat that by saying I’ve swung the PM wedge for years and I’ve only had the MIMs for a few weeks.

 

MISCELANEOUS: 

 

I don’t like the look of grooved ellipse on the back of the club. For me, it makes the club look chunkier and impacts my mental picture of being able to get the club through tight lies.

 

 

As you can see on the 60*,  the black face is showing a lot of wear for so little use with the club. 

 

 

PLAY OR TRADE: 

 

I think there is an opportunity to keep the 54* wedge in my bag. I just need to spend some practice time to understand where I can and can’t use it. My guess is full or half swing shots are going to be the primary use. I’m going to have to trade the 60* and return the PM grind back to the bag when the competition is over. I just feel so much confidence with the Callaway from any lie and situation. 

 

OVERAL COBRA MIM WEDGE RANK: 

I don’t think the MIMs are bad wedges by any means, they are certainly exceptionally well crafted, rather I just don’t believe my game is good enough to leverage the design of this club. I once heard someone say that the PM wedge is like cheating, well golf is hard and I need every advantage I can get.

@Headhammert good review!  It took me a bit of practice and play to get my Glide 2.0 to cooperate.  It went on double secret probation about a week after I got it and was only returned to full time playing status a month later. I'm guessing you'll get these fine tuned and they'll become a go to trusted friend.

Nice review of the wedges @Headhammer your wear is one of the reasons I don’t think I can put a black wedge in the bag. I really enjoyed the cobra wedges I used to have, although that pesky shaft is wht I got rid of them.  Keep up the good work Sir!

Man have I missed this thread!  Just got back from a family trip to Asheville, and my goodness is the summer weather there ideal.  

@B.Boston ended up playing a full bag this past Sunday with my buddies ... flaked out for I simply didn’t have the courage! But hot damn dude, a 75 with the bomb & gouge strategy?!?! That’s hella impressive. And hard to beat. Nice man!

But apologies for the shameless plug of posting a score from a course I played in Asheville with a RENTAL set. (as I still await for my Cobra F9 OL irons) The 16 holes from my irons only round last week was a great reset from a mental approach to the game and my last 3 rounds have been the most enjoyable rounds of golf in a while.

Shot an 83 with Warrior clubs that are standard ... current clubs are an inch longer and 2° upright. I mean, that’s gotta count for something! 

My boy @daviddvm in 2nd going into this week! You know!

Somehow I don’t think the allure of warriors is the same as something like a nice set of vintage blades. But I could be wrong.

Yes, I think I get a more even pressure from the BOA than laces. The best analogy I can give is that the shoes with laces feel like a comfortable pair of shoes. I enjoy them.

But the BOA/DISC Pumas feel like slippers. They conform so much better to my feet and I don't get uneven pressure from tension in the laces. I also find they are easier to get on/off.

My biggest complaint with the Puma shoes is that they are not truly waterproof. My feet routinely are soaked after wet morning rounds.

Yeah that was a surprising thing for me too. And with the FW/GIR challenge it was aiming middle back of the green.

All of these things have had a positive impact on my scores! After today’s round my Arccos overall is a 6. Thats 4 strokes better!

Alright, I’m not sure if it’s the competitor in me, the Bryson grips, or the massive amount of time I practice chipping and putting, but this competition has got my game on fire! I broke 80 for the first time today! 76! Sooooo fired up! Never could have imagined my first round in the 70’s would come with just woods and wedges. 

Bryson grips are awesome btw. Definitely worth a try. I had one yank but otherwise it was mostly gentle fades or draws. Driver handicap was below 0 for the first time ever in Arccos. 

Handicap certainly went down today, but pre round was a 13.1. Played the whites today, 67.1/118. On cloud nine!

Alright, I’m not sure if it’s the competitor in me, the Bryson grips, or the massive amount of time I practice chipping and putting, but this competition has got my game on fire! I broke 80 for the first time today! 76! Sooooo fired up! Never could have imagined my first round in the 70’s would come with just woods and wedges. 

Bryson grips are awesome btw. Definitely worth a try. I had one yank but otherwise it was mostly gentle fades or draws. Driver handicap was below 0 for the first time ever in Arccos.

Nice shooting.

To try and make things as comparable as possible, I'll play off the Red tees, which should be reasonably close in distance, and rating 68/122. I've never played off the reds in the 17 years I've been a member, so it should be interesting. Hoping the weather holds off, forecast is showers, 60F and 10mph wind.

That’s a super nice round mate! Glad the jumbo grips are working out for ya, and dang was your putter on fire.

We’ll see what game I bring tomorrow, but that’s gonna be tough to top!

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to finish 18 holes today, but it wouldn't have mattered because I wasn't going to beat @edingc anyways. Started out strong at 1-under after 3 holes, then went bogey, bogey, bogey, TRIPLE, and I was pretty over the whole thing. Triple came on a 160y par 3 that I knew was going to be awkward. Played a choke-down, half 4hybrid and it did not turn out well. For your viewing pleasure:

Pitched on the upslope of the bunker and kicked right into the crap. Epic fail!

I was running out of sunlight and they took the flags out of the cups so I just called it after 12. Sadly, going to have to concede my challenge against Cody because it's IMPOSSIBLE to get a damn tee time on this island. Probably wasn't going to win anyways, he put up a good number! Team #chickencalves loses

Also, made a Bryson par on the first hole

Congratulating on breaking 80 and by going low with that 76! @GB13 has his work cut out if he's going to take you down. I also love the Puma gear you won, they make the most comfortable shirts and I really like the color combo on that one.

My main problem will be the cold weather. Playing off the red tees probably means I should borrow a skirt off my wife, I'm assuming @B.Boston wore the same when he played his round. 

Seriously though, I'm probably going to move back to the whites, just to challenge myself and see how my score compares to a full bag. Last restricted club game I played was 4 clubs only and I shot 3 over for 9, so I'm keen to test both my game and my mental approach.
