TEAM HAMMER COBRA/VESSEL STAND BAG REVIEW

The Cobra/Vessel stand bag features a 4-way top with full length club dividers, carbon fiber stand legs, nine pockets and comes equipped with a backpack strap. Strategically placed carbon fiber panels fused with carbon fiber stand legs provide maximum tour level performance.

With COVID most ranges have eliminated their bag stands so having a dedicated stand bag has made practice sessions much more convenient. The backpack strap makes it comfortable for carrying the bag from my car to the range/course, which is saying something for this old man’s bad back! Since I ride 100% of my rounds putting the bag on a cart makes accessing some of the pockets and clubs a bit of a challenge. Additionally, strapping the bag firmly to the cart constricts the bag making it difficult at times to pull clubs out and get them back in.

I miss my putter well! I find myself digging around for my putter a lot with this bag. I think part of the problem is the fact that I carry 4 woods whose head covers, while gorgeous, eat up a lot of space in the bag.

I like the handle on the top of the bag for hauling the bag in and out of the car. I also use the handle to dry my wet golf gloves.

The look, well, I’ve said it before, this bag is the perfect complement to the SpeedZone clubs as together they look fast standing still. The combination of faux leather with the snake scales pattern and carbon fiber is stellar. The carbon fiber legs reduce weight and have a race car inspired look and the end caps add stability to the whole package. IMHO, rain covers from most bag manufacturers are an afterthought, and it was clear that Cobra wanted to carry the SpeedZone theme even into that minute detail. Kudos to the Cobra marketing team for incorporating tons of branding elements into the bag & head covers without the bag looking like a NASCAR! The feel is a high-quality material that looks like it will hold up for many years.

At 6 pounds it’s a little heavier than some canvas stand bags, but the shell is more durable. My cart bag weighs in at 0.7 pounds more than the stand bag. I don’t really notice the half pound difference between this bag & my cart bag when both bags are full

The left side of the bag just has a small pocket with a narrow zippered outer pocket. While I like the branding elements, I would rather have seen that real estate filled with another small pocket to increase storage capacity, this would also help when used as a cart bag to provide a pocket with easier access. At the very least adding a second D-ring in that area would allow for the addition of a club brush or second towel area.

I usually throw a cold bottle of water and a frozen protein bar in the cooler pocket of my stand bag which will stay cold at least through the first nine. The Vessel bag lacks a cooler pocket. It does have two insulated bottle holders, but the cooling power is overwhelmed in Georgia summers.

The bag has a good size ball pocket and a very deep pocket above that one for your rangefinder & valuables, and sleeves for 4 tees, but it would have been great to have a very small pouch pocket in that area for tees & divot tools. I’ve put those items in the left side zipper pocket, but it’s tough to get to when it’s on a cart.

Since I'm a rider, and not a walker, I really love having a Swiss army knife type bag that has tons of storage, access to all the pockets while on the cart, 13 full length dividers and a putter well. So, I am going to trade the bag for my old cart bag, BUT, I am not letting this bag go! I’m going to put my old Cobra clubs in it and display the bag in my office, it’s just too cool looking to trade!

The Cobra/Vessel stand bag is gorgeous, the fit and finish is top notch and carryover branding from the clubs to the bag is the best I’ve ever seen. If you are in the market for a new stand bag, or you are a Cobra loyalist you won’t find a better stand bag anywhere.

Nice write up, Hammer.

Don’t think I’ll ever be able to convert to a cart bag ... I’ve been tempted many a times, but with the minimalist appeal, and the leg stand feature, it’s just too convenient for me when I’m at the driving range and even at 39, I do still occasionally walk while carrying my bag.

The thing I love about the Cobra Vessel bags are the pro level staff bag details and stitching ... and I’ll admit I never heard of the Vessel brand and have since visited their site a few times. Beautifully crafted and designed bags they have

If any of you feel compelled to donate your bag to an avid Cobra golf user ... do think of me. 😁

B.Boston’s #CobraConnect Challenge 4 Review  Speedzone Stand Bag Edition

AF3AE26A-7C59-4F82-A51D-4C8F4AC4EB86.jpeg.b6ed07e1cdaffe356d018ea3cc756d5f.jpeg

The Speedzone Stand Bag is a collaboration between Cobra and Vessel and was designed to boast the look, feel, and durability of the SZ Staff Bag in a more compact stand bag.  It features a 4-way top, 6 zipper pockets, two drink sleeves, and dual shoulder straps.  So, does it live up to the Speedzoneperformance name?  Let’s find out!

To start, I’ll mention that I originally selected the Ultralight cart bag but due to scattered availability Cobra sent all the testers this upgraded Speedzone Stand Bag.  I was going black and yellow anyway, and think the colors on this scream Cobra, scream performance, and have definitely gotten a few looks on the course.

Look & Feel – 5/5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

In a word – Premium.  Everything you look at or touch on this bag has a premium finish to it.  While it leans heavy as a dedicated carry bag it works wonderfully with my Caddytec Caddylite EZ V8 and works well on a cart if you’re riding.  The size is on the large end of a carry bag, larger than my Ogio Fuse, and probably around the same size as most “Hybrid” stand bags.  The 4-way top is amply sized and features full length dividers for each compartment.  The material has proven to be durable and easy to clean and I am personally a fan of the black, yellow, and red they used.  I also love how easily the straps can unclip from the bag when I use it on my pushcart or on the back of a cart.  It makes a difference for ease of access and having a nice streamlined clean look.  But if you do use them, they are very comfortable.

A5A8285C-36C5-4606-BB8D-C56CE27DCA72.jpeg.0d33d100fb4d5dcfe01cdb8c4c153dda.jpeg 3F400C00-A33D-4172-8D06-FE76E576D666.jpeg.a5e42b9d9934e5faca54e8fc54c8d43f.jpeg

Storage - 3/5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐

For its footprint I don’t feel like I can fit any more than in a more compact carry bag, but it does have some great features that others don’t.  I like that in the main pocket there is a mesh elastic pocket that is great for holding smaller loose items and a lockable valuables pocket that is hidden from view.  The two drink holders expand when in use and remain relatively streamlined when not in use.  I would not rely on them to keep a beverage cold, however.  The only pocket I find not very good is the outer pocket on the hip side of the bag.  Its small overall and has a narrow opening.  I would have rather had a larger second pocket on the main large pocket than this one.  I found myself leaving the raincover at home and out of the bag since it is large and took up a lot of space.

On Course Performance – 4/5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The bag has been great for me on the course.  It fits very well on the pushcart and didn’t slide around much on the back of a cart.  It was super easy clean with a wet towel after a dusty round in Maine and the zippers worked well.  It’s held up fine as expected in light rain and has no staining to mention (thanks to the black fabric for sure).  I’ve has some minor issues with clubs grabbing or pulling up more than one, but no better or worse than other bags with similar designs.

Miscellaneous – 3/5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐

If there is one thing I don’t like about bags in this style (with collapsible bases for stability) it is that the full-length dividers bunch up and clubs can bind.  I usually look for bags with external leg mechanisms and solid bases.  They are probably less stable and more prone to damage, but I like the way clubs work with them better.

Play It or Trade It - 3/5 Stars ⭐⭐⭐

I’ll most likely be playing this for the rest of the year, but I still do want to check out the Ultralight cart bag now that I have a pushcart.  It is not really a fault of this bag, as the fit and finish is superb.  It is just that I think I would enjoy some of the features included with that bag more (extra full-length pocket, cooler pocket).

• Fits great on my pushcart and the back of a cart?  ✔️
• Holds all my stuff? Mostly Yes. ⚠️
• Treats my clubs and grips well?  Mostly Yes. ⚠️
• Will it keep holding my Cobras? ✔️…. But a cart bag may be in my future as well.

Back from my Cobra Connect Challenge.  Wanted to play Beaverhead GC in Dillon, but they were jammed with the lady's league until almost noon.  So, I went to Madison Meadows.  As noted above, I chose to bag a second driver and I think it worked out well. I was able to combine my 4i with my 3w and 5w, off the tee, on a couple of holes that had the wind at my back. Since, until recently, I pretty much played a bump and run short approach game from just of the greens, I felt quite comfortable using my 7i, 8i (my former go to), and 9i.  In fact, today's performance has me wondering about my "new normal" game plan - have I fallen too much in love with the Glide 2.0? 🤔

Today's Arrows.  The Razr-Fit has been sitting in the shop for over a year - got benched for the G410P.

thumbnail?appId=YMailNorrinLaunch

I was striking the ball well all day; and both drivers were working.  I birdied#5 and #8; (#8 the week before in the HRC for a KP entry).

thumbnail?appId=YMailNorrinLaunch

Then, on the par 5 #9, I absolutely forged the Callaway Razr driver and followed that up with a 5w that found the front, hit the flag, and stopped just inside 4 ft.

thumbnail?appId=YMailNorrinLaunch

I made the putt for eagle... the first one I've had in over a year!!  A birdie/eagle combo - I cannot recall doing that before. Maybe I have, dunno?  In any case...

I wish I had that pair of swats on tape, I could watch the replay for hours 🤣.

image.png.aa2b0a658af2e23c0a81bf58d2a5eee5.png

The wind picked up quite a bit as I made my way through the back nine. On #14, I got lucky and hit a tree branch that saved me an OB... it went something like "oh, s***... yesss!!" 🤪 On #18, I had to punch out from under a tree and then gutted a 7i (would have used the UW) over the green. I then came up woefully short on the 4th shot and 3 putted 🤮.  Talk about going from the penthouse to the outhouse on the same hole 😬.

I did putt with my 5w twice and my 4i once during the round for shorties so I could get them back for an upcoming hole. The husband/wife I played with on the front nine gave me a really odd look until I explained this challenge. Neither have heard of MGS, but they have now 🙂. Having played this course quite a bit, it was a definite advantage to deciding which clubs to choose and strategy for upcoming holes.  Trying this format on a brand new track would be really tough.

So here is my entry against "the kid".  Played from the (blue) tees, course rating 68.2, slope 120.

#MGSCobra2020 #CobraConnect Cobra SpeedZone Stand Bag Review - edingc, a.k.a. #TeamCalvesLikePhil

carbonfiber.jpg.28939692119310874e588b6d19a7fed7.jpg

Cobra set all of us up with the SpeedZone stand bag, a collaboration between Cobra and Vessel Bags. The bag is a slightly downsized version of the SpeedZone staff bag used by Cobra staffers such as Rickie Fowler.

I use a walking cart almost exclusively, so this is my first experience with a stand bag in a long time. Last season, I used an older OGIO cart bag before moving onto a personalized Sun Mountain Sync for my first rounds of 2020.

Look and Feel - 5/5 Stars

Simply put, the SpeedZone stand bag is one of the sharpest looking and best feeling bags I’ve ever been around. It is luxurious in feel, no surprise given Vessel’s reputation. While I understand the color scheme may not be for everyone, if you are a fan of Cobra you won’t find another bag that better embodies the brand.

The material is very sturdy, a welcome change from my Sun Mountain Sync’s nylon-like material that feels so light and fragile. The stitched Cobra snake and Tour Crown logos are 🔥. A faux-snakeskin accent panel running the length of the bag completes the look.

And, really, how many stand bags out there have carbon fiber-wrapped legs?!?

Storage - 3/5 Stars

side2.jpg.3ecff775e5e9ac1738e092e969e6e335.jpg

I try to keep my bag as light as possible given I walk most of my rounds with a push cart. It is simply too much work to push around a heavy bag. While the SpeedZone stand bag provides just enough storage for me, it is lacking in this area overall.

There is a large side pocket that can hold a jacket, with two smaller pockets inside. However, some of this space is reserved for the included rain hood.

The ball pocket is large, though I generally store my laser rangefinder here along with a bag of tees and my keys and wallet during the round.

tourcrown.jpg.991a56ab1065224c2ee7a12fa8674e0b.jpg

The soft-lined valuables pocket, embroidered with the Tour Crown logo, serves as the best place to hold everything I keep in my pockets during a round - balls, short and long tee, divot repair tool and ball marker. I don’t think I would trust my rangefinder out of its case here unless it was the only thing in the pocket.

The two small side pockets hold my golf glove, a can of sunscreen and a small bag containing first-aid supplies. Unfortunately, that’s about all the pockets can comfortably hold.

Almost every round this summer I’ve carried along a 32 ounce Gatorade Zero for hydration. My Sun Mountain bag had a very nice cooler pocket that was large enough to hold the bottle with no issues, and kept it cold for the entire round. The SpeedZone bag does not have such a pocket, but only two small insulated sleeves for much smaller bottles.

On-Course - 3.5/5 Stars
3halfstars.png.ec2bf852e39f09d51f91fbd9ae3a9eba.png

side.jpg.93f66b1ecefee2951311023b13ab6e0b.jpg

There have been no issues strapping the SpeedZone stand bag on my CaddyTek push cart. I have had no problems with the bag shifting or falling out of the cart’s pinch top or lower bungee straps. All of the pockets remain accessible while on the cart, and the only negative is that the towel/towel ring needs to be lifted up prior to placing the bag on the cart so that the upper supports don’t pinch it down.

I have used a 14-way top bag for the past decade, and my biggest complaint about the SpeedZone stand bag is the four-way top. I understand this is not the only bag on the market with this design, but I hate the four-way divider for multiple reasons:

    •    There is no dedicated putter well, which can make a putter with an oversized grip tough to remove.
    •    Clubs only stay in groups and not in order unless you’re very careful. This is my obsessiveness kicking in - with a 14-way top I have everything organized perfectly.
    •    It is tough at times to remove or replace a club without the grips grabbing other grips or club shafts. Sometimes it takes a good shake for all of the clubs to seat to the bottom of the bag.

rain.jpg.90fe92715ccb8a5366525c06c4edbb7c.jpg

I played in a steady rain while attempting the irons-only challenge, and the rain hood fit well and kept my clubs dry while still providing easy access to them.

To be fair to the review, I walked nine holes while carrying the bag and also played 18 with the bag strapped to a golf cart.

I thought the bag performed really well when strapped to the golf cart, since the grips were much less likely to bind when the bag was standing straight up. I looped the cart strap through the handle, and the bag stayed secure all round.

Carrying, while not something I’d want to do all of the time, was surprisingly enjoyable. There is sufficient padding on both the straps and the bag to make the experience very comfortable. The bag employs a really nifty system that allows for the straps to move independently of each other and resist twisting.

Miscellaneous - 3/5 Stars

straps.jpg.e8bba55bf9ed26897fc82bb3f4c6d041.jpg

The strap system is easily removed with four clips. It’s a fantastic design and purposeful for those of us who do not carry except out to the range.

I’ve noticed a few marks on the yellow shell of the bag, I think a light scrubbing will take them off without issue.

While the rain hood is a heavy material and well-built like the rest of the bag, it takes up considerable space in the largest side pocket. I only put a single box of balls in the side pocket along with the rain hood and it’s pretty full. Removing the rain hood is certainly an option, but, in my opinion, defeats the purpose of having one.

I also wish the bag had some velcro for my golf glove on the outer shell. It’s a feature on the Sun Mountain, and I found myself using it a lot to keep my glove dry between shots during the hot and humid Michigan summer.

Play It or Trade It - 4/5 Stars

cartstrap.jpg.b93e8ae1a5eed9f5f2a8f02aa6c97b3c.jpg

This is a really solid stand bag, but the four-way top and lack of a putter well hamper its utility when strapped to a push cart. I struggle too often with grips grabbing each other when clubs are removed or put back into the bag. For this reason, I doubt I will continue to use the bag during my rounds after the end of #CobraConnect.

The SpeedZone stand bag, however, will become an excellent range/practice bag for me. I rarely take my full set of clubs to the range so binding is less of an issue. I love having the stand on the range, also.

I just can’t trade or not use a bag this beautiful!

The SpeedZone stand bag would be an excellent bag if I carried every round. It is extremely comfortable; well-built but not heavy. And, it's a looker.

Unfortunately, the four-way top is a big deal breaker for me when using a push cart.

As we has come to expect a finely crafted review by edingc.

Kudos to everyone on their reviews so far, especially on the bags. That's one thing I really enjoy about the user reviews here - testers aren't afraid to call out concerns and point out why they wouldn't use a piece of gear, or things they think could be better.

This will be my submission for this week. I must say, this is a grueling format when you’re playing well, and absolute torture when you aren’t. For everything that failed me this week, I feel my strategy was pretty perfect. I just didn’t execute well.

68.6/128 rating and slope

The putter sensor was not reading right, so I can update the score when I get home.

so 64 + 32 putts is 96? 😉

It was tough, I built my strategy around saving clubs for the par 3s and saving my wedges. I ended up with 3 mid iron tee shot/mid iron approach to the green holes just to kill the 5,6,7 irons. It was interesting, I was 130 out on a hole with a PW and 58° left, and a par 5 coming up. That’s the only time I’ve ever intentionally missed a green!

The only thing that slows me down is the thing in between my ears. He is one of the few I have no problem walking and leaving him in the dust.....does not usually happen though, we have the same POP

17.1, Close I hope, but I left a couple putts out there today.

It was a great round, I felt that I needed to really think two shots if not holes ahead to ensure that I had the right clubs to use off the tee.
