Going to let @B.Boston sum our round up. All I am going to say is:

1) that was a blast!

2) thoroughly enjoyed being able to get both our thoughts on a swing/putt/where to play the ball

3) review coming later

Shoot! @ncwoz beat me to the thread.

I had the pleasure of competing alongside (but still socially-distanced from) Nate this morning for the #CobraConnect alternate shot challenge. Neither Nate or I had ever played the alternate shot format, which truly puts a lot of pressure on your shots because you're responsible for your partner's next opportunity! Nate had the "luxury" of about 10 minutes and 12-15 range balls worth of practice with the Cobra clubs and off we went this morning just after sunrise.

Before I cover the round, let me just say @ncwoz can smack the cover off the ball. I'm not short or slow by most measurements, but I fully realized how fast he swings in comparison by hole No. 2. After I hit a good 7 iron from the tee to about 162 yards from pin, I told Nate this would be a pretty full 8 iron or even a soft, choked up 7 iron to the green for me. He proceeded to pull the SpeedZone 9 iron and hit one of the highest, most towering iron shots I've ever seen, ending up pin high left of the green. Jaw dropping...

So we got off to a great start, rolling three straight pars to open the round behind three pretty good tee shots from myself and some great short game and putting from Nate. We were feeling really good after No. 3, after a fantastic drive from me and a booming 6 iron from Nate led to par (I chipped up with the 58 and we two putted - obviously Arccos is not very accurate when we're socially distanced and using different putters).

rickroll.gif.7349f3f58815b4fd9257219738c3f319.gif

And then we just couldn't replicate that magic over the next 15 holes. A few balls were lost, and few trees were hit. We walked the course, but had we been in a cart I imagine it would have looked something like this:

golfcart.gif.b3ca68d01b7af8df0629e3d9f4e5110c.gif

I appreciate Nate's willingness to do whatever it took to complete this challenge, even pulling off an impressive left-handed Tiger-esque punch out from some bushes that I found by pulling my 5 iron off No. 6 tee so far left that I was over No. 7 tee box.

The scorecard with all of the gory details:

image.png.c34455ce93a5801cde7f39b715fcad2e.png

I'll draw attention to the putting because I absolutely murdered the round with my awful distance control today. The only hope we would have had for scoring better would for me to have not needed to putt at all. I left poor Nate so many bad second putts, as evidenced by the staggering number of 3 (gulp, and 4) putts.

So while Nate might say it's his fault, I'm not so sure. This was my worst putting round of the year by far, I could have probably used a wedge to putt more effectively today.

marshawn.gif.2f7c20da22e33a0922b70eaa17c92627.gif

I thoroughly enjoyed meeting/playing a round with another Spy in real life (small world, by the third hole Nate and I realized that we lived less than a quarter mile apart for the past two years), and it was fun to see Nate give the SpeedZones a shot. They certainly weren't a great fit for him, he's probably in the 60TX/70X driver shaft category, but I'd be curious to see if he has any thoughts to add. As for me, aside from the putting I actually put together a reasonably good ball striking round and still feel pretty good about all of the clubs, but especially the driver and wedges.

I think if I'd have trusted the straight flight I was seeing on the range and lined up accordingly, Cody would have been putting for Eagle pretty easily.

He's not exaggerating here. Nate was about as far back on the box as you can get, making the hole play every bit of the 341 yards downhill listed on the card. We were just shy of hole high on the right. Unreal.

To preface as you all know Bryan and I live close and play together at least 1 time a week. Have seen these cobras since day 1 but have honestly only swung the driver and a few shots here and there with the irons.

Luckily my irons and the Cobras are more or less the same club. You can pick out differences but they are both players distance irons, with the same lofts and technology packed into these sweet irons. We also have the same exact shaft (Bryans cut down 1/2") but besides that same club. Lofts below:

Taylormade P790:

image.png.b8ab85a31a564af17b6e13473ae958bb.png

Cobra KING Forged TEC:

image.png.74fe94bdb95b4a97d6e78b985457773d.png

Going to touch a little on each aspect of the clubs:

Driver:

Pre-This round I have loved this driver since day 1. Look, Sound, Feel all of it. If i did not purchase my titleist TS2 last year I would have bought this week 1 of the challenge (still may have to over the winter, undecided). I love the infinity face and how hitting high on the face doesn't ding up the top of the club. But more importantly the forgiveness is just incredible. Cobra has crushed the driver category (this is the start of a trend as you will see)

Wood/Hybrid:

The 5 wood, like the driver was butter and just fits my eye and swing. Hit it off the deck as well as off the tee. I am not sure yet if I enjoy it more than my sim will definitely need some additional time with it to figure that out. It is up there though. Hybrid not sure on it. Didn't hit it on course (never came into play) and on the range just never got comfortable? Beautiful club but need more time with it (think it has a lot to do with the shaft here but).

In the mean time the number below speaks for itself on the wood:

IMG_5332.jpg.8d2cfeb558bbfdd4b006182a7d7b5334.jpg

Irons:

Irons compared to my gamers are 7 grams heavier (roughly) and it was noticeable at first. I think it benefited, I didn't have a single chunky shot today. The additional weight I think helped clear everything. Was dialed in. Having similar clubs I think definitely helped and made the transition easier. Only thing I would change on these is a chrome finish VS the matte. I said it on the course and I will say it here. Testament to these Cobras...If I could go back before purchasing my 790s I would actually swap and pick these up instead.

Below was not the only shot like this today with these clubs. Wind in the face easy 7 iron.

IMG_1894.jpeg.b8728a9c6dfe3486f7a275fbbe97eb63.jpeg

IMG_1912.JPG.2470cbb442bfa4e89eb7eb6b43ca4251.JPG

Wedges:

I only had a handful of shots today with the wedges. Great feel, very soft feeling which I liked. Control was fantastic and I cant say it any better than @ncwoz you're doing yourself a disservice if you dont give these wedges a go if you're in the market.

Top to bottom this set plays. I am confident that if I was able to mess around with the hybrid a bit and maybe swap the shaft (was a little heavier than I would like) I would be fine but would also be tough to take the place of my current hybrid (that goes for all hybrids on the market though). Cobra has officially gotten themselves a buyer in the future.

So today’s round is in the books and first I’d like to thank @Lacassem for absolutely bringing his A game today to Blissful Meadows.  We played the back tees which are 6700 yards. The rating and slope for these tees are 73.4 and 136.

We both played really well, and when we didn’t hit a great shot we did receive some fortunate bounces along the way.  I know Mark just posted his mini-review but I think he really benefited that our irons and wedges are similarly spec’d.  We have the same iron shafts and his P790s are similar to to the Forged Tec’s in loft and construction as well.

I’ll also say I think it was a real advantage that we know each other’s game really well.  It was a lot of fun to be on the same team and help with reads and shot selection.  In a non-COVID season I think this challenge as a 2-man scramble would be an absolute blast and post some really low scores.... or if the Mods wanted to be mean a 2-man worst ball could be fun too.

But that’s enough there... time to show the results form the SHAKE’N’BAKE showdown! Some photos from today:

And some highlights/low lights....

Mark had a near hole-in-one with a smooth 7-iron off the tee.  He landed just left of the hole and spun right and stopped less than 2 feet behind the cup. Easiest birdie putt of the day!

86BA4CA2-1B24-4345-9E0E-3A2C33E07D06.jpeg.b0189da0a1e405ae1d559c4e81be4a62.jpeg

On this hole Mark *Smashed* the 5-wood with a ball we actually thought was lost... I’m still not really sure HOW it ended up there, but it did.  Unfortunately I hit a terrible second shot and we ended up with a bogey... my bad!

499EA960-876E-4DA3-BD3C-47B7E2CD8BE1.jpeg.918888609ffddbd147f9dc3ef2677f6b.jpeg

Mark crushed another 5-iron off the downhill here which left me with about 122 yards on an uphill approach.  I hit a nice shot in that settled in the middle of the green for a stress free 2-putt.

Last hole to share I smashed a drive off the tee in a slightly downhill but into the wind par 5.  Mark and I decided to give it a go to the green but his 5-wood elevated and got hung up in the wind.  It was nearly in the woods but kicked straight down and left me with a really good angle into the green with the flag tucked back right.  I hit a 60* wedge to inside of three feet and Mark made the birdie.

And now to the score!  Mark and I shot a 76!  Oh what could have been had we not doubled the 18th...

First off, my apologies for not being super active this week. School started for me, so my amount of free time has been cut down a bit.
Anyway, for this week’s challenge, I decided to partner up with my mom. We used to play all kinds of alternate shot/scramble/best ball games when I was little and she was introducing me to golf, and I figured it be fun to do again. Nostalgia!! We had an absolute ball of a time, and while the golf was subpar (most confusing terminology ever), it was great to do again. We ended up shooting an 88 at my home track (68.6/128). Her adjusted handicap is 19. She really liked the irons and wedges, but the driver was just too far off in fit for her to swing well.

That’s a great way to play this week! Glad you got to play with family, that’s always a good time.

The two man alternate shot challenge this week I found to be the most difficult yet the most enjoyable of the #COBRACONNECT4

Playing golf we are usually task with the sole responsibility of success or failure squarely on our own shoulders. We compete against other golfers, the course, and the elements. In this week's challenge I believe I now understand why it means so much to the professionals to play in the Ryder cup and the President's cup events. The comradery of these team events are a relief for the golfer who is always perched on an island against all other competitors in tournament play.

Randy and I spent the day cooperating on strategy formulation for each hole and each shot. We cheered each other on, picked each other up after a poor shot, celebrated good shots, and high fived with each made putt! In spite of the blistering heat that we have been enduring the last month I think I can speak for both of us...we had a great time Thursday. We both hit some really poor shots but we both made up for it with many timely well executed shots as well. The round started out really rough, triple bogey 1st and double bogey 2nd 😲 ouch! We started grinding out pars and bogeys the rest of the day. By the end of the round Randy was hitting the SpeedZone driver better than I do! On the backside Randy saved us several times with full shots and chips with the sand wedge. I made several timely putts. More importantly it was a team effort and was very rewarding for both of us. #TeamCobraONE #TeamONELength

I'm encouraging Randy to post a short review on his impressions of the SpeedZoneONE clubs. Spoiler alert... he's already thinking about buying a set.

We played at Bay Forest Golf Course our home course which both of us are extremely familiar which gave us the best chance for success. We played the white tees. I had every intention of taking numerous pictures but with the constant discussion about strategy, conditions, clubs, etc,... It never even entered my mind I was so in to the moment during the round. Though we were two guys playing one ball our pace of play was very deliberate and we never pushed the threesome in front of us. After the round Randy wanted to play some more so we played a few more holes each playing our own ball and that gave Randy opportunity to play more shots with the Cobra clubs he seemed to be falling in love with! Then we headed to a EL TORO restaurant for some great Margaritas and Mexican food. A restaurant my wife and Randy have frequented since they were kids growing up together. Hand it to my wife she had the presence of mind to meet us at EL TORO and take our picture. I love my wife❤️

Great stuff David!  Sounds like it only took a couple holes for your partner to get used to the one length clubs.  Also for him to get a long so well with the wedges within the round is another check mark that they are really onto something with the one-length clubs.

I’ve been thinking about grabbing a one-length 5 iron to compare against my standard 5-iron. I could see myself using that in the future.  I’m still not sold on the idea of a 7-iron length wedge... but could see myself using the same length in all my wedges.

At any rate I’ve really enjoyed seeing your success with the one lengths and it certainly opened my eyes to the possibility of using some sort of one-length set up down the road, even if its like a 2-one-length set.

Played a solo round this morning and put up numbers right around where I've been all challenge:

image.png.54536ff201d4fa5c11d191b0c2dfd0f8.png

Just another round where the putter let me down a little bit with 37 total putts. Didn't get a few to drop from inside 5-6 feet, and looking at the first putt distances, I didn't give myself a ton of opportunities from that distance anyway.

image.png.0b2c881a79629e648b725ea8744cbf45.png

I've started losing the 2 hybrid a bit right off the tee and it hurt me some today after I had been reliably going to it since after the irons only challenge. Tree trouble on holes 1, 3, 4, 5, 9, 11, 14, 15 and 16 really didn't give me any chance to shoot a lower score today, so all in all I'm happy with the result.

I did string together a couple nice shots that made for some really solid pars.

Screenshot_20200906-113006.jpg.5c10cb3be696a66e2ac5034c681666cf.jpg

No. 7 - By far the hardest hole on the course. Hit a fantastic drive (I think the longest I've hit on this hole ever? It runs all uphill.). Followed up by a really solid 8 iron to the perched green that left me an east two putt par.

No. 10 - Made the turn right in front of a group that was playing the back nine only, smoked a perfect 6 iron from the tee with the audience and then hit a wonderful choked up pitching wedge that landed right where I wanted and rolled out to about 5 feet down the sloping green.

No. 11 - Got away with a bit of a cut up 2 hybrid that cleared the trees guarding the dogleg and sat down about 150 out. Had to navigate under tree limbs on the right side of the fairway, so I pulled a 7 iron and hit a low runner. When I got to the green the greensmower stopped me and said I almost holed out and missed by just inches. Unfortunately, I just missed the birdie putt by about 3 inches. (Would have been a great hole, I have not birdied this hole this year.)

No. 13 - My best 2 hybrid shot of the day followed by a really nice full 58 wedge.

No. 18 - Beautiful push draw drive with the SpeedZone Xtreme uphill and into the wind left me a full 54 degree wedge into the green. Got a little chunky with the wedge but still hit the green and two-putted for par.

I have tee times schedule this week on Tuesday and Thursday but right now the weather does not look like it's going to cooperate for either of them. Hopefully the forecast changes a bit. We are now at the very tail end of summer in Michigan as precipitation has picked up a little and the temperatures are dropping. I wore a long sleeve shirt for the whole round this morning and it was somewhere around 53 degrees when I teed off.

Glad you’re still able to get out! We are slowly getting to that end of summer time, getting that cooler air feel this past week. Hope we both have a long fall season!

great shots there enjoy the last Week of CCC!

First and foremost I would like to thank DavidDVM for inviting me to play in the CobraConnect Challenge. I have recently started playing the game again and enjoyed playing the Challenge. Especially with an old friend that I used to play with. This is also my first post on this forum and new to MyGolfSpy so "Hello" to everyone. Thanks B. Boston for the Welcome. When David told me about the One Length Irons I really wanted to try them out because it sounded like a great idea. After a short learning curve I felt very confident in the clubs. Note: We went straight to the Tee Box, I never hit these clubs one time before the Challenge. The extra yardage is great not to mention they are way more forgiving than my 15 or so year old Deep Reds. I also have a higher ball flight on my Approach Shots with the Cobra's. My Sand Wedge shots were checking within about 5 feet of my ball mark. All in All the Cobra One Length has me excited about the game again and looking forward to getting my Handicap back down. Something else worth noting coming from a person with back problems. I am more comfortable physically with  the One Length. My back is straighter and I am not swinging the club as hard. And I am less fatigued after the round. We were able to get in 5 more holes after the Challenge without alternating shots. And then we both succumbed to the Texas heat. Cheers...

welcome! Glad you were able to get out and awsome to see you on the thread! We’re you able to catch up on all 160+ pages here 🤣.

keep an eye on the kanibi thread, could be some good back relief stuff there if you’re interested in that!

It's a perfect Hawaii day right now, 80ish degrees with a nice breeze, and I'm stuck in the house on lockdown. It's supposed to end on Thursday 12:00am but we're likely going to see it extended another 2 weeks, which will be roughly 90 days that the courses have been closed this year, like a faux winter, kinda? Don't know how you guys can do it in the northern states man! We pay for it in housing costs in Hawaii/CA but damn is it nice to play golf and satisfy that itch at least once a week. I've scratched the entire outer layer of my skin off at this point 😔

Na it’s different for us... we’ll go out and play in the winter because it’s going to be “unseasonably warm and sunny” AKA 43 degrees
