Cleared by my doctor to start light chipping and putting, but no full swings yet. Woo hoo! And if anyone says they saw me take 5 full swings with my gap wedge & pitching wedge at the range today they are damn liars!

This has been the magic sauce for me.  Yesterday I kept repeating at set-up (on all shots) to reduce grip pressure, slow tempo, and quit overpowering the swing... pure magic.  Seems like I hit them just as far not trying to hit them far. I don't know why it is so dang hard for this to be the natural swing.  I can only conclude that good golf swings are at risk to the laws of entropy 🙂.

I was going to also quote Bryan's plaque post, but after two near misses, thought the better of it 🤣.

Felt an urge to try some new clubs yesterday, because why not.

The word of the day, gentlemen, is butter.

I hit the new King Tour irons...oh wow. They feel great. And holy pure. Was able to hit them with my typical Modus 120x shaft, and I have never seen a more consistent grouping. They definitely don’t go as far as my gamers, but that’s expected with more traditional lofts.

I know @B.Boston was not a huge fan of the SpeedZone hybrid's tendency to go left, but I will say I do enjoy its "anti-right" properties on days like today. The course I played setup really well to that kind of shot shape (lots of bad stuff right, water and roads, namely), and there's a lot to be said about having confidence on the tee box that you can aim a little right and let the natural shot shape work. I played a very windy 27 holes and only pulled driver a few times because I didn't want to risk losing balls right. I gave up some distance, but not a lot.

Still thinking about this Hybrid and options I could try out.

Cody, did you ever get to installing a graphite shaft in the speedzone 4 iron?

I have to get myself to somewhere I can test out the utility.. but a YouTube video got me thinking about potentially using a Speedzone 7-wood in that slot.  Maybe shortened a half inch or so depending on where the gapping worked out.  I’d just be curious to see if the stopping power was still there.

Thinking that might be a viable option since I love the 5-wood and feel comfortable hitting a draw or fade with it.  We shall see.

But for the time being the Speedzone Hybrid is sticking in the bag versus the Titleist 818 H1.    They both had a tendency to move left about the same, and I prefer the feel of the KBS Hybrid Prototype shaft in the Speedzone.

Yes, I have the X-Caliber 75 gram Rapid Taper shaft in the 4 iron. Playing out to 39.75" with the Cobra Connect grip.

Solid, although the 75g shaft feels a little light. It launches very high, which isn't necessarily what I wanted out of that spot. But it's incredibly forgiving.

Based on some range numbers it's probably a 210+ club off the tee. Haven't tried it off the deck yet, it's not something I'd probably ever try.

I'm interested in demoing the Cobra Utility. Probably a little more purpose built than my Frankenstein 4 iron.

Interesting to hear yawl talking about the same spots in the bag I'm having some trouble with. I love the 5w (190 - 200 yards) and the 21* one length hybrid (175 - 185) in my bag. But I'm having trouble with the one length 6i and 5i. I am very erratic with both clubs and have trouble with getting them high enough to stop on the green. The 7i is money (145 - 155 yards). I've got a 24* speedzone ONE in my shopping cart on Cobra...thinking about pulling the trigger for X-mas. My hesitation has been I've had a little trouble getting enough height with the 21* hybrid ONE to stop on the green in firm conditions. So 160 - 175 range is my kryptonite right now.

Do you think you’re manipulating your swing trying to get more height which could be leading to the problems?

I think I’d like to see something between one length and traditional one day.

Wedges all the same

9, 8, 7 the same

6, 5, hybrids the same

I feel like I would not get enough height out of the long irons as a low ball hitter lol.

I feel like that’s a tough area of the bag for most of us. But there’s a plethora of options to try out! In theory the hybrid would get more height than the irons, might be worth a shot!

Part of my problem is ONE length clubs are hard to find and demo even in a big city like Houston.

The lofts and everything about the clubheads are so different with one length, it’d be interesting if they could do that. I have a buddy who plays them and has no problem elevating them.

To @daviddvm point, confidence is key! Those irons start getting pretty flat and it’s hard to feel like you can control it.

As for the issue with hybrid, I find it to be the second most critical SHAFT in the bag, behind driver. Because of the left miss, getting the shaft nailed in that fixed the issue for me and I absolutely crush that club now. I tried hitting the utility club (with a steel shaft) and didn’t like it. May be a totally different story with a graphite shaft. That’d be interesting to find out.

The problem with the Cobra one length 5 and 6 irons are they are too upright.  I took mine to Club Champion and they bent them both 2 degrees flatter. It has made a huge difference for me so you may want to try that before buying another club. While I was there I had them chop off a 1/2 inch on all clubs as well and that has helped a ton with center face contact and overall consistency. My 3 and 4 one lengths hybrids fly low as well but the courses I play I usually don't need them to reach greens and if I do they roll up to them.

In the interest of transparency, I've been evaluating and changing everything in the bag (which is implied by my signature changing around several times over the past few weeks).

The SpeedZone Xtreme is safe. It would take something super special for that to get knocked out of the bag. I bought the Callaway Super Hybrid with the intent of replacing the SpeedZone 3 wood. I never loved the sound, and I never hit it off the deck. It's just a mini driver for me in that sense. So the 17 degree Super Hybrid (lofted down to 16) is going to fill the 3/4 wood spot for me and be much more versatile since I've already hit it off deck with success.

I've used my Maltby PTMs for all of my winter practice so far. I love the forged feel and the stiff C-Taper Lites have a more pleasant feeling than the x-stiffs that are in the SpeedZones. Yes, the PTMs are about a club shorter in the long irons, but the gapping is much more manageable in the lower irons than the SpeedZones.

For example, I played nine holes last Friday with the SpeedZones. Hole No. 2 was a 155ish-yard par 3. With the SpeedZones I had to decide either to step on a 9 iron or really lighten up an 8 iron. In October I used 8 iron and went long by about 10 yards. Long story short, I ended up coming up about a yard short of the green and the ball trickled down into a pot bunker. I walked away with a six after butchering the rest of the hole.

With the PTMs I would have been able to hit an almost full 8 iron and hit that gap easily. I have much narrower gappings from 7-GW than in the SpeedZones.

The MIM black wedges aren't going anywhere. They are great around the green and with a few swing tweaks I've been working on in practice they are starting to really sing on full shots as well.

Regardless, I have a gap between the 16 degree Super Hybrid and 21 degree SpeedZone 5 iron/22 degree Cobra F8 hybrid I use with my PTMs. The SpeedZone 17 degree hybrid is a great club, but it really rolls out a lot and isn't something I use much other than off the tee. The SpeedZone 4 iron with the graphite shaft is super forgiving but it launches really high (which kind of defeats the purpose of using it as a "driving iron" on windy days), and it's a touch too long to use from the rough.

I'm debating about two new hybrids in 23 and 20 degree lofts. Something like the Callaway Epic Flash line. They would replace my Cobra F8 22 degree hybrid and the 19 degree driving iron slot. That'd leave me with 13 clubs so if I ever wanted to go to a 52/56/60 setup, I could.

Decisions, decisions... I'm just trying to get rid of single use clubs while still giving myself all of the shots I need to hit to score well.

Been tinkering the last month, pulled the trigger on the PTMs in summer with the TTLite, just re-shafted with the RT75 and loving it! Looking at replacing my ping g410 Alta 65 cb shaft, can’t decide between Pro Tsl or Avalon 5 or 6, I love the purple but the TSL is most probably the right one ss100?

Two steps forwards one step back!

  • 4 weeks later...

So I’m working on an update for my WITB thread but felt like this was worthy of bumping the #CCC4 thread for if any of you guys are still following.

Way back when we were selected and had our orders in we were asked what we hoped to see or had concerns over and such.  I was worried that the lofts of the Forged Tec irons would create some weird gaps in my bag (I had come from a set that was basically 4* through the set).  And I was worried that the strong lofts and hollow design would lead to some hot shots.  I know that I have already mentioned how consistent I felt the distance was from the irons but I was looking at my Arccos stats and needed to share this view of all my rounds played since getting the Cobra clubs:

DECDF4E6-BBAD-47FF-9913-FFF1C2476F59.png.b026d88e2dde6e05e8f3423021f16c6b.png

So starting with the wedges I’m very happy with that gap, I almost never take a full swing with the 60* so a 20 yard gap there makes sense.  Outside of that they are almost perfect 15 yard gaps all the way up to the hybrid.

I can see the data suggesting the 7 iron and 5 iron are longer than they should be, but looking at individual shots shows that the 7 iron is still pumped up a bit from a few down hill tee shots (my longest shot with that iron is 196 yards).  And with the 5 iron, those numbers are getting pumped a bit from some tee shots.  I can hit a good runner with that club that gets some extra yards.  I think this consistency and gapping really helped me get comfortable with these irons right away and were instrumental in my ability to play well over the summer.

TL;DR - Cobra’s engineers know what they’re doing.  Don’t be concerned about the lofts on the forged tec clubs.  Of course, YMMV.  👍

Nice.  And you were happy with the trajectory?  Enough height in a given club despite a stronger loft?

I wonder if the King Tour’s won’t be a part of a CCC5...if I remember right they’re a little less aggressive with the lofts.

I’d say with 100% confidence that I am hitting the ball higher with this set than I was with my AP2s which were about the same in the wedges and short irons and weaker in the mid and long irons.

Hmmmm CCC5.... who will we heckle this year 😝

In other news I have been switching between my f9 irons and a set of 2016 forged tecs. This is mainly because I don't need the 2 degrees upright that the F9s have. Also I had noticed a big spin drop off with the wedges so I have bought a set of Cleveland RTX Zipcores....sorry Cobra but it's hard to find your gear in NZ 😭
