Bad Golfers With Players Clubs (My WITB)

Recommended Posts

I just finished a full bag fitting at Club Champion, my first "big boy" fitting since taking up golf 5-6 years ago. It cost an arm and a leg, but the experience was great and I am anxiously awaiting my new clubs. The surprising thing is that I'm a 21 handicap (albeit improving), yet pretty much everything I was fit for would typically be considered more of a players (or players distance) club. But there was no denying the numbers; I hit them better than any of the game improvement stuff I tried, and I tried a lot. I ended up with:

Ping G410 LST driver
Callaway Apex 19 hybrids, 2H-4H (though I didn't get to try the Ping G410 because I'm lefty and they didn't have one)
Callaway Apex 19 irons, 5i-AW (and the Cobra King Forged Tec was a very close second)
Titleist Vokey SM8 wedges, a 54-10S and a 60-8M bent to 58°.
(No fairway wood because I can't hit one to save my life, and no putter they had was better than my Evnroll.)

Has anyone else had a similar, "I'm not worthy," experience? I know plenty of good golfers play game improvement clubs either to add distance or because they're so easy to hit, but the other way around is usually associated with hackers who, say, pick up blades because that's what Tiger plays.

Driver: Ping G410 LST 10.5°, Mitsubishi C6 ONYX 60 Stiff, 44.5"
Hybrids: Callaway Apex 19, 2H-4H, Fujikura Atmos TS Hybrid Blue 85 Stiff
Irons: Callaway Apex 19, 5i-AW, Aerotech SteelFiber 110 Stiff
Wedges: Titleist Vokey SM8 Jet Black, 54-10S and 60-8M (bent to 58°), Aerotech SteelFiber 110 Stiff
Grips: Golf Pride MCC Plus-4 Align Midsize
Putter: Evnroll ER7, stock grip
Ball: Srixon Z-Star

That's going to be a sweet looking setup—definitely add pictures once you have everything in your bag!

I posted here about my first driver fitting, where I ended up getting fitted for a Mavrik Sub Zero 9° head (cranked down to 8°), weight forward, Aldila Rogue White 130 X-stiff 70 gram shaft. That's a big boy club for someone with a 97mph swing. In my case, though, the extreme setup was to counteract my bad swing tendencies: a negative AoA with strikes high on the face. By going with a Tour-level setup, I lowered my launch and spin rate and got much better distance. Definitely destroyed my preconceptions going into the fitting.

Sweet sounding bag dude, and welcome to another Lefty in the forum 😁

As far as I'm concerned you did exactly the right thing by getting a fitting. Too many people get hung up on "my handicap is high so I should play GI or SGI clubs" when in fact their swing speed is way too fast for them to work consistently. You obviously have the speed to use the "better" player clubs with your stiffs shafts so enjoy it. Besides with a properly fitted set and some practice the handicap will plummet soon too 😎
