Even Par thoughts.

I just got a text from a friend to tell me he just shot even par for the first time. Of course I congratulated him immediately.  Shortly after, I thought to myself was it par on every hole or were there bogies and birdies.

So here is my question. What would mean more to you as a golfer. 

Shoot par on every hole. You did what the course designer intended.

Or would you rather have a few bogies and some birdies thrown in.. You missed on a few and beat the courses design on a few.

I'm sure all would like to shoot par and would'nt care how they did it.  But pick a side. Thought this might be interesting.

Truth be told, I would take either but since you stated to pick a side I would like to par every hole. I would find it satisfying to play each hole “as it was intended”.

I would shoot my age if I did either.  Never done that.  I did shoot a 69 once a long time ago at a par 72 course in AZ, but I consider that a fluke.  

I have shot par on both the front nine and back nine at my course, but not in the same round obviously.  I don't recall that any of my 9-hole pars were all pars.  There are too many holes that I have trouble reaching in regulation and bogeys are inevitable for me.  So, if I had to pick one, it would have to be a par round with bogeys and birdies because all pars is highly unlikely.

I'll take what I can get . It's an accomplishment just breaking 100, 90, 80 or even 70!

Truth be told I have never parred 18 holes. I have never played not making at least one bogey. So all 18 pars for me. I have shot below par and broken 70, but always have had bogies and birdies and eagles in doing it.

Ok. Not gonna happen for me either way, but par every hole in a single round would be awesome.

When someone says they shoot any score I think combination of
Birdies, Pars and bogeys. All
Pars would be fun, but that doesn’t mean you played the hole as intended. On a par 4 driver into the fairway bunker. Second shirt if the green, chunked third, and thinned fourth that hits that flag and drops in is a par, but I don’t think the architect drew it up that way . But yes, an 18 par round would be fun.

Either way would be fine for me.  Realistically my round would have birdies and bogies.

Birdies and bogies. That way I know I can beat the course, and my bad shots are the reason for the bogies.

Considering the lack of birdies in my normal rounds I'd take the opportunity to rack up a few on my way to shooting even par.

I would take 18 pars, the epitome of boring golf. Birdies & bogeys are my normal but I have never had a bogey free round. So if it took 18 pars to do it, sign me up.

I would prefer bogeys and birdies, and I would prefer to have the bogeys early and the birdies later.  I'd like the feeling of overcoming my own mistakes.

Exactly what I was thinking - if I started the round with a few bogies and ended with a few birdies to shoot even par, I'd be ecstatic. If I started with a few birdies and ended with a few bogies to shoot even par, I'd be incredibly disappointed.

... I have had 18 straight pars only once, and it felt like a tie. It was a course I play a lot and if it were a championship caliber course I was playing for the first time I would feel differently. As cnosil said, it ain't like I hit every fairway, every green and 2 putted. It took some grinding to save pars and some misses to avoid birdies. I much prefer having some variety with bogies and birdies. I had 5 birdies yesterday and 3 bogies. One of the bogies was a topped tee shot that went 30 yards when I tried to tee it up higher than normal and ride the wind ... just dumb as a normal tee shot downwind would leave me a 9i/Pw in anyway. I still almost saved par missing a 10 footer that just didn't break. Plugged in a bunker on a par 3 for another bogie and found a fairway bunker with a 3 wood but right up against the lip and could only 58* myself out for my 3rd bogie. For me at least, much more fun than 18 straight pars.

I wouldn't go that far, I'd still be reasonably happy with even par, no matter how I got there.  Maybe a little disappointed.

Very good question.

As others indicated, either would be acceptable. Bottom line the type course/condition determines how I answer this question.

IF its a course that is in great condition, medium high slope/course rating and one that has some "test" built in (requires some risk/reward) then the bogies/birdies would be preferred. I say because if I shot par on a course like my example, it means I reached down and took some risk so to speak. Or I did not play overly conservative.

IF its a local course that I consider an "ok" layout and not particularly consistent in course conditions (i.e sometimes greens roll true, sometimes bumpy) and not a very long course than I expect par every hole.

Great question.

Since you asked for a side, and it is too easy for me to make bogies, I would prefer to par every hole. That would be a difficult task for me and feel so satisying.

Birdies and bogies. That's what happened the 1 time I broke par. I think I needed 5 birds for -1...

Dave PO43 I thought the same thing until I was 2 under coming into the 18th hole and after a great tee shot hit my second into the green side bunker and it plugged. Ended up shooting even par 72 and felt like I just swallowed a cotton ball. It took all the enjoyment out of the round. I still think about when I get the that 18th hole.

I love me some birdies, and I would love to shot a few bogies, then a few Birdies to get an even par.

I would also be trilled to shoot 18 pars.

Regardless how you answer the question, and play, anyone would still feel like they left something out there.

Par is Par, anyway you look at it. In my 40+ years of golf, I believe I have only done it once or twice. Interestingly, I most probably have been under par more that exact Par. Best round was -3 and at that stage I was on a 4 handicap (20+ yrs ago).

... I was thinking of this thread when playing today. I was hitting my T100-S really well and getting off the tee nicely too. I am getting tired of the wind which was around 20 mph today. Seems like we have had only 1 or 2 windless days this spring/summer. It makes putting difficult as well. But enough cry babying, I missed 2 very makable birdie putts and after chipping close after just missing the green from 181 with my trusty 4 iron and that 20 mph wind dead in my face, I realized I had 2 birdies and 2 bogies. Parred 17 and then hit a really nice drive on 18 leaving me 165 to a pin tucked back left over 2 bunkers, wind left to right so the play was go right at the pin and let the wind drift the ball to the middle of the green. I thought "that makes a solid par but only an outside shot at birdie so I started the ball left of the green with a 6 iron and let he wind bring it back to the hole. Landed in the fringe and trickled to about 8 feet.

... Felt like tournament pressure knowing even par puts me back in this thread but a birdie means 1 under par and I could post in How'd You Play instead. Putts just are not breaking like normal this year so I decided to not give the hole away, looked good until the last 6" and just caught the lip on the low side for a tap in par. So here I am.

I like the diversity of the group. I didn't pick a side myself because I just couldn't figure out what was more rewarding for myself.

 I fortunately have accomplished both. When all the boxes were filled in with par, I felt like I left some birdies out there where I should have been happy with shooting even par. I admit they were not all GIR's. There was some chipping and one putts, so it was still a scramble to shoot even par.

When I scrambled from bogies to birdies I felt like I accomplished more to pull it off in the end. Birdies tend to get you pumped.

I think I'm going with an all par card. This is based on my home course having 3 holes that just always seem to kick my butt. Parring these in the same round would always bring a smile to my face. (only happened once so far).

Its such a hard game and staying consistent is damn near impossible. I would love to par every hole. Birdies are great and eagles are even better but to stay consistent for 18 holes would be a very rare occurrence. So my answer would be a bogey free round.
