GolfSpy AFG
Anticipation With a Honma TR20 460 set to arrive on my doorstep tomorrow, I thought I’d set the stage for what I typically see when I hit driver, what my current gamer is and how I’m set up, what I’m looking for as I evaluate the Honma, etc. First, here’s my current gamer, a 2017 Callaway Great Big Bertha Epic with the made-for 55g T800, a club that was the first to bring Jailbreak technology. The sliding weight track is set to a draw bias and the club is set a degree closed, all in an attempt to help me get the ball to turn over. Until last season I was primarily a fade player, but the more blunt way to put it was that I was taming a slice. Working with my GolfTec coach I’ve really come a long way in terms of coming in more shallow and hitting up on the ball, and as a result I’m much more of a draw player. That said, I do still lose shots to the right (my big miss), but it’s a block that doesn’t draw rather than a slice. Once I was picked by MyGolfSpy for this test, I set out to chart a few rounds with my Epic to have a baseline to measure against the Honma. Those numbers are as follows: Total FIR: 46%, with 13% missed left and 41% missed right. Eliminating shortest and longest at outliers, average distance is 256. As you can see, I’m not a great driver of the ball, but I’m not awful either. My distance is respectable (and improving when the contact is there). Many of my misses are the barely in the rough type where I’m still in position on the hole, which this info won’t reflect. But, I can at least use it as a baseline to see if I am hitting the ball longer and more accurately with the Honma. And, don’t read too much into these numbers. I used a Bushnell rangefinder from the tee box and again from where my drive came down to get these yardages, but I obviously haven’t accounted for wind, moisture, temperature, some holes being uphill or downhill, or all the things that would affect overall distance. Short of putting this chart on the blackboard at MIT and hoping Matt Damon comes along to sort that algorithm out for me, you’ll have to accept this. After 3 rounds with the Honma at the same course, I think it will have merit as at least a data point to compare the two. Of course I'll be getting launch monitor numbers a couple times too. sirchunksalot, golfingbrock, JohnSmalls and 3 others 6 Quote Driver: TSR2, Ventus Blue 6 S, 65g Stiff FW: TSR2 3w, 15, Ventus Blue 7 S, 70g Stiff Hybrids: Apex Pro 3H, Ventus Blue 8 S, 80g Stiff Stealth DHY 4H, Ventus Blue 8 S, 80g Stiff Irons: SMS 5-6, SMS Pro 7-PW, Aerotech Steelfiber i95 Stiff Wedges: SM9 48 F Grind, 52 F Grind, 56 M Grind, Aerotech Steelfiber i95 Stiff Putter: Sri-Hot 5K Triple Wide, Stroke Lab shaft Ball: Pro V1 Click here for my HONMA TR20 Official Review! Popular Post GolfSpy AFG
Rained last night and today here, so I won't be able to introduce this to a Bridgestone until tomorrow. That will be interesting too...tight tree-lined course with a lot of par 4's that really narrow down and encourage long iron and hybrid tee shots. It will be fun, and interesting, to play driver on every hole. First impressions...aesthetically, what a beautiful golf club. It may sound somewhat overstated, but there really is (to my eye) a premium craftsmanship-quality appearance and look to the club. The shaft...as many of you already know, Honma swears by the quality and performance of their stock shafts, their own "Vizard" line. When their rep called me he spent quite a bit of time making that point to me. Again, haven't hit it yet, but it certainly looks sharp. A couple of other initial observations. The head cover is truly quality; looks & feels like premium material, and I think the stitching of the club model on the other side is a nice touch. Second, one of the knocks on these clubs is the highly non-intuitive nature of the hosel adapter and making adjustments. More on that in a future post, but at first glance that appears to be accurate...certainly different from every other OEM. That said, I don't tinker with the settings...I dial it in at a fitting and leave it, and won't touch it again until a fitting tells me to. Given that, I absolutely LOVE the appearance...it's an adjustable hosel that looks glued and thus has a smaller "visual footprint" if that makes sense. How much will I love it once I go to make an adjustment remains to be seen! Finally, I think she looks damn good in my bag. Also got to hit a few in the dark tonight. First shot with a Vice with dog teeth marks went 302 down the middle. Then I hit a Pro V1 on the next one and Dude! Amazing drive! Had the Sub70s a little over a month but loving them so far. They are a couple degrees flatter than my old mizunos so it's taking some time to adjust to the distances but they feel really good! I haven't had to hit them too much with the Honma in the bag so far because I've had a lot of wedges in to holes. Also the Honma is really shiny! GolfSpy AFG
I wasn't able to get to a course yesterday so I had to settle for a range session. I took my time working from the bottom of the bag up, wedges and even irons, hit three drives with my gamer, and then unveiled the TR20. My first drive was a little low on the face but dead straight and long. From there I hit maybe 25 drives and, without the benefit of a launch monitor, I can share some initial impressions: 1) This is definitely longer than my gamer. How much, not sure yet, but this club gets it out there for sure. The ball seems to really jump off the face. 2) I've got a little bit of dialing in to do. My normal ball has been straight or a slight bit of draw; last night I was hitting the occasional straight ball and a lot of pushes to the right. My gamer was set up a degree closed and set to a draw bias, whereas I took this to a range in the stock setting, with the heaviest movable weight back for max MOI. This morning I closed it down a degree and will see how that does tomorrow when I actually play it for 18. I don't intend to move the weight to a draw bias unless tomorrow's round suggests I need to. That said, the weight port in the heel is still actually pretty far back, as you can see, so I suspect any MOI loss would be minimal. Regarding that loft/lie adjustment, I'll post about that later, but much has been made of how different their system is. It is, but it's not rocket science...simple enough, and still like the aesthetic benefits of the smaller adapter. Overall, I'm liking this club a lot. The sound and feel are fantastic...but does it perform? Gaming it for the first time tomorrow! Can't wait to answer "What's a Honma?" ten times...
