How will Shankster’s first round since March go?

Shankster

Recommended Posts

Well. The course is opening. I will probably wait until the following week to snag a tee time, but... I am curious to see how my round goes. Nearly as long as winter lay off in Michigan. I’ve actually practiced less than I did any of the 4 winters I was up there...

My guess is 92.

Big old block off the first tee, blocked out by the trees on the right... again. On in 4, 3 putt.

Or... I could hit a 3 wood off the left rough line and pray for a fade. Then have a 5 or 6 iron in. Probably chunk it. Then blade the wedge shot.

I feel all out of sorts. No idea which way the ball is going to go. I’m half tempted to just go play and not warm up. I have several dozen golf balls in my bag, so it seems like a good idea...?

What do you think?

I’ll post the arcoss stats regardless of how embarrassing they are.

What’s one of your best scores for a first round of the year? Roughly. I had never broke 90 before this year.

shooting from the hip I’m going with 95 (all that fishing and no golf swinging)

You’re a baller... so I’m going with 84. You’ll keep it simple and play to the center of green. Sure, there will be a a half dozen or so shots you wish you had back, but you’ll surprise yourself and wonder why you don’t go with the 3/4 simple swing more often.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it until I see arccos stats proving otherwise.

Good luck when you get out there for the first tee time!

I’m glad you and the Blueprints are getting out for a loop @Shankster

I understand the attraction of self-deprecation, but painting that blank canvas with storm clouds before you even step on the 1st tee is not the recipe I would recommend.

Just try to enjoy being out there and you’ll end up right where you are supposed to be... back in golf’s embrace.

It will go one of 2 ways. Either you will hit it great and leave the course wondering why you could never find that swing before. OR you live up to your name and by the end of the round you know where the sweet spot of the hosel is. Either way it doesn’t matter. Have fun and enjoy it!!

I'm going to say you'll shoot an 87. I think you'll start of a little rough, but you'll find a way to get in the groove and be stronger as the round progresses. I have faith that your short game will come back to you quickly and keep you in the game.

I agree with @downlowkey, just get out there and enjoy being back on the course.

You’re right good Sir.

These past few months have really put things into perspective for me. I relied HEAVILY on golf as my main hobby, and easily became discouraged.

Goal for this year is to just enjoy the good shots and not worry about the scorecard.

A recent refocus has shown me that I missed out on way too many things over the past 13 years of my career.... so a Shankster lifestyle overhaul is in order.

Seriously considering the hickory golf thing. After my purchase of what I thought were some hickory shafted clubs went awry, I believe I owe it to our forefathers to get some tweed plus 4’s, a driver cap, white shirt and a tie just to get in touch with our beloved games storied history.

Appreciate you DLK.

I'll go with 89. First few holes will be a struggle then you'll find a ryrhym and settle into it. I don't think you'll shoot lights out but be pleasantly pleased at the end.. with both the game and the time.. good golfing my friend.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have my hypothetical round planned out. (Really happening on Wednesday)

The forecast is 91°, light and variable winds, but the wind always seems to be a factor at the course.

If everything goes as planned I’ll shoot a 57.

I am back at the BAD/Mo way of swinging again, changed up the backswing a little to get more depth, and distance. Only problem with this one plane swing is getting used to the short game. If I use my old methods I get a little closer to the heel than I would like, sometimes even a little too far... if you know what I mean.

So for now, the short game will struggle, but this make for better planning for the round. Leaving myself a full PW in rather than a half gap wedge or something. I’ll have to watch some video of Moe and BAD to see what they do.  I did find some success with a closed stance, and feeling like I’m hitting a pull (75 and in).

Ill probably get out there and have fun, if not, oh well. Beats being in the office.

Well. That was much better than expected.

played a little scramble. Shot a 68. Weird rules where we had to use at least one shot from each person on each hole... the on the green rule was 15’ or more.

I had a bunch inside the 15’ mark.

i lost one ball, which I probably would have ended up with at least a double on that hole myself alone.

mid 70’s I’d guess by myself. The distance is back too. 1.5 - 2 clubs longer.  Driver is still useless. It went straight for the most part. But it only goes 10 yards further than my hybrid.  Full send mode on 18 into the wind was 266.

Today was a good day.

I must confess.  I will be moving on from the Blueprints at some point. I used the top end of the Taylormade’s and played marvelously with them.

if anyone is looking to get rid of a “mint” set of P760’s for a possible trade for the “extra mint” Blueprints send me a DM.  There are some rules to if/when I send them to another spy.

Agreed. Curious who the taker will be for those golf ball slicers.

Question what is the process of transferring to another MGS member?

Well, the way I believe it works as that the person that gets them has to agree as I did to not sell them, trade them in, or pawn them.

If they chose to part ways with them too, they’d have to offer them up to a MGS Forum member.

Thats the short of it I suppose. Mods please correct me if I am wrong.

It is interesting for sure.  This one plane swing deal is here to stay.  My wedge game sucks right now.  Around the green anyways.  It’s full send or nothing right now.  I had 133-138 Yards in 4 times Today.  No club for that distance.  Tried stretching a GW, PW, knock down 9... couldn’t get it. And the wedge lies are too upright.  I start them left, don’t like that.
