JohnSmalls
Welcome to the 2020 MGS Hard Rock Challenge! Your 2019 Defending Champion: @sirchunksalot 2019 Long Drive Champ: @HardcoreLooper After 1 year and a month, we're back like we never left! For the third year running we put away our meticulously engineered tour balls to go back in time to a more simple day, the day where we played bargain basement priced artisanally crafted rocks. In other words the finest budget golf balls made by the likes of Pinnacle, Callaway, Wilson, and the quintessential Top Flite. Get ready to have your fillings rattled, your drivers tested, and your shot making ability thrown aside like the iron you just chunked 50 yards short of the green. The past two challenges have been awesome and have taken a life of their own. Friends and memories have been made. I want to thank you guys that keep coming back year after year to take part and you new contestants as well. Your participation makes this competition special and it really wouldn't be possible without you. As always this is a member run challenge, which means there are no sponsors and the official prize is bragging rights. This is for fun and a way that we all can play a round of golf together in different places at different times. Now onto the fun part...what's new for 2020! The HRC planning committee has decided to make a couple of tweaks for this year. New award for most rounds played/submitted for score ***naming rights are open for the award( Rockstar, Hands of Granite, etc.) Classic Rock (Molitor) vs. New Age (Nitro) Which era was better? Will there be a trend in the scores where classic rocks score better than new rocks? Date of manufacture and whether or not the golf ball is still in production considered for placement into classic rock vs new age Official Rules: Rounds must be played from July 1 to July 31 You must use an approved hard rock for your 9 hole round to count. Picture of rock(s) used. Rule of thumb: Ball must be a 2 piece surlyn covered rock. Any ball with "soft" in it's name will DQ your round. You may play as many times as you wish, best 9 holes submitted counts for score. Need to include handicap, slope, and course rating for posting score. 9 holes must include at least one par 5 and one par 3. Conforming Ball List: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NoHAFkCrkf1mK7zt3wy3xILJYgOPj8aaOk35KNTHsuk/edit?usp=sharing -Long drive rules: Long drive in fairway, GPS verified, photo or screenshot must be included -Closest to the Pin (Par 3 only) Shots within 10ft of pin qualify, photo must be included Measurement taken with heel-to-toe steps or by putter measurement. Please list distance with picture and measurement taken. ***Scoring has been simplified to encompass handicap and course difficulty! {Gross Score-[(Slope/113)*((Handicap/2)]}+(72-Course Rating) Example: *Keep in mind banter is welcome and expected. Feel free to provide a mini review of the rock used. We like a good laugh! Good luck guys! In the wise counsel of @PING Apologist #9, armor up! sirchunksalot
I played my first round of the 2020 Hard Rock Challenge today. Scoring wasn't great and I definitely didn't have anything that would qualify for either closest to the pin or longest drive. Before I go into details, here's a video of my first shots with both the 2 iron to kick the round off and my first shot with the persimmon driver. A pull and a pop up, in that order. How about the scoring? I played from the white tees at Chatata Valley Golf Course and shot a +13 49 playing to a 17.5 Arccos handicap. I hit 5 fairways with zero greens in regulation and 17 putts. I just noticed I counted the x's on my scorecard and put 3. Sometimes I just can't math. Almost forgot to mention that my ball for the round was a Top Flite XL 2000. Here's the slope and handicap rating from the USGA website. It was a fun day on the course, albeit a painful one on my hands. There's nothing like the vibrations of a Rock Flite shimmering up the shaft and hitting your hands like a jackhammer. You can truly feel a slightly thinned golf shot and know you made a mistake. I'm thankful that I didn't snap a shaft every time I hit this rock a groove low, and I did that a lot. What hurt me scoring wise today was the woods, I just couldn't figure out how to hit them and had a lot of short drives. Off the fairway I topped every 4 wood I hit and I feel like I could have scored better playing an all irons round. The 2 iron off the tee was money after the pull on the first hole. The PW was a pin seeking machine on both chips and full shots. Here's a shot with it from 60 yards on the 7th hole to 8 feet saving par. My shot of the day came on 9. I hit 2 iron off the tee, topped a 2 iron from the fairway, hit 5 iron from 163 just short of the green, and duffed a chip landing 30 feet from the hole. I then sunk the putt for bogey to end the round. I didn't have Arccos for the round, my woods don't have a hole in the grip for the sensors and I couldn't think of a viable workaround. HardcoreLooper
First round today, at the local First Tee course. Here's the tale of the tape: Try not to be too jealous. The rock of choice? The sparkly, pearlescent orange Titleist Velocity. Because the only thing better than an orange rock is a sparkly orange rock. Amirite? I actually played OK, which was surprising, because I've been playing like crap lately. These things are like a freight train around the greens. Once you get them going, they do. not. stop. Oh, and no shots quailifying for closest to the pin on a par 3. But what's the maximum distance for closest to the pin on a par 4? This was on 17. I hit it maybe once a year. sirchunksalot, JohnSmalls and fixyurdivot 3 Quote What's in the bag: Driver - F8 - Aldila NV Blue 60 ( S ) 3 Wood (13.5*) - 980F 4 Wood (18*) - F8 - Aldila NV Blue 60 ( S ) 3 Hybrid (19*) - RBZ 4i - PW - D7 Forged - Recoil 760 ( S ) 52* - CBX 58* - CBX Full Face 2 Putter - Craz-e Bag - 2.5 (Blue) Ball - AVX Instagram - @hardcorelooper Twitter - @meovino Facebook - mike.eovino
HardcoreLooper
Awful round today. +4 37. Bogey, Double start led to me trying to play long ball, which didn't work out well for me. I did have a 280 yard drive that finished three feet in the rough. And I caught up to a slow group that wouldn't let me through, so I wound up just playing nine. MaxEntropy
I've been icing my hands/wrists nightly in preparation for the pain they are about to endure - tomorrow is the big day. Choice of ball may be a game-time decision, but it will be either an XL2000, Pinnacle Gold, or, if I can still find it, the trusty old Molitor from last year. OK, I haven't really been icing, but perhaps I should have been. The back nine wouldn't have been bad except for two stupid doubles. Dang! A 33? I assume a net 30 (or thereabouts) is probably safe score to take home the prize. The sensor in my driver's "connect grip" has been dead for a little while, I finally figured out the problem/temporary solution before changing the sensor. Just like adding a missed shot post round, you can do it during the round. Before/after your shot, pull your phone out where your ball is, in the app hit 'edit' and press the corresponding club. The app should add the shot and will pick up any subsequent shots into/on the green with clubs that have a sensor on them. I didn't think about that and will give it a go the next time I take them out. The woods have the Spalding logo on the ends and it terrified me to think about what I'd need to do. I'll just sensor up the irons and try that. HardcoreLooper and JohnSmalls
