I said that after my first round this month and have unfortunately played 3 more rounds. What tees did you play? @MaxEntropy I've played 5 different rocks this month (2 of which were old Top Flite XLs) and the one glaring result was that the sound and feel of an XL is single handedly the most unique of any golf ball made. The sound is like nails on a chalkboard. I am fairly sure that they dimpled billiard balls. Played the white tees. My course is blue, white, green, red. Berg Ryman
Going out this afternoon for a 9 hole round to capture photos and video for my review due tomorrow, but when I was playing this morning I found something I didn't expect in the used ball bin... I have in my possession the Oncore Caliber, that's right, the steel core ball through sheer random luck. This afternoon it becomes my HRC round. fixyurdivot
Busy day today. As crazy as my schedule has been, combined with my itch to fish, I needed to get a HRC round in and some Align XL testing. I played Madison Meadows in Ennis, MT. To start things off, my (new to me) used ShotScope V2 had this to say after searching in GPS mode only... whaaat? So I texted my new friend/spy @Thin2win who informed me that "you have to load the course from the SS app into the watch"... umm, didn't I feel like the idiot . I thought, much like my Voice Buddy, they are preloaded. It took about 10 minutes to load all the courses I play here and in Yuma, AZ. With that little snafu behind me, I started my round. I played 2 balls on the front nine; a Maxfli Tour and the ProV1 AlignXL. I felt really good today and was flushing the ball. With temp in the low 80's, a dry wind at about 7 mph, and fairways drying out a bit, balls were really moving. I hit my G410P driver better today than anytime I can recall since bagging it . I only missed three fairways; one finding a red staked hazard but that I could advance w/o penalty. I pulled a Slazenger Select Distance and a Titleist Velocity out of the stash of rocks. I texted Chris which I should chose. He liked the "orange one", so that's the one I teed up for my back nine. The guy I played (Mark) with was hitting Pinnacles... don't know him, complete coincidence... but what are the odds? Hot Rock ready for launch. #3 par 3 was straight into the wind today. I hit my 5w and left a short putt for the deuce. On the On hole #4, I flushed the drive and caught the downslope leaving me 60 yards according to SS. A 269 yard entry for the long drive contest. I would have loved to see how far it rolled but it cleared the crest and you cannot see them. The driver kept me out of problems and, were it not for a bellied wedge on #14, would have likely avoided the double bogey. A lucky 15 ft. putt on #16 yielded a second birdie and I had a reasonable shot at another on #17. A really good day on the course and start to my HRC... I'll be hard pressed to top it. I played from the blue tees and the course par/slope is 68.2/120. aerospace_ray, JohnSmalls, xOldBenKenobiX and 3 others 5 1 Quote G410 Plus, 9 Degree Driver G400 SFT, 16 Degree 3w G400 SFT, 19 Degree 5w ZX5 Irons 4-AW Glide 2.0 56 Degree SW (removed from double secret probation ) ER5v Putter (Evnroll ER5v Official Review) AI-One Milled Seven T CH (Currently Under Product Test)
sirchunksalot
I played another round today at Chatata Valley in Cleveland TN today, playing a lovey feeling Nitro ball. I don't have anything that would have come close to either a closest to the pin or longest drive. Shot a 51 to a 17.5 Arccos handicap hitting 4 fairways and one green. My putter and wedge killed me, I duffed one in a hazard and putted 21 times. I can't putt with this ball, at all. It is the auditory equivalent of nails on a chalk board, even off an Odyssey white hot insert. My ears are still ringing from the high pitched ting from even three footers. It's horrible. I'm planning another round tomorrow, hopefully I can pull a good round together. fixyurdivot, russtopherb, MaxEntropy and 1 other

sirchunksalot
I got another round in today, I was going to take the Wilson irons out and play with them but the wife is painting the bathroom and buried them in the closet. I didn't get to put my Arccos tags on them and I really want to get some data from them. I was going to take the time to dig them out yesterday, but I woke up not feeling good from the meatball sandwiches my wife made the night before and just wasn't feeling it. My round today was played again at Chatata Valley from the white tees with a 17.5 Arccos handicap which has how jumped up to 18.1. Shot a 51 with 2 fairways hit, no greens, and 19 putts. I was playing great sitting at 7 over through 5 and 9 over through 6. Then the 7th hole happened. Hit a chunky drive with the 5 wood into the fairway, but about 20 yards shorter that I wanted, hit another 5 wood that went all duck hooky on me, then the pain began. I was visited by the spirit of El Hosel, the patron saint of the shells and he put a special blessing on my wedges. I couldn't chip the rest of the round and considered pulling a Phil and putting anything inside of 50 yards. I didn't, as I thought my putter might not like taking abuse from the Top Flite XL 2000 I was playing today. I also didn't think I needed a putter with a face that was somehow suddenly opened to 45 degrees. Might have made for some awkward putts. Which reminds me, I need to have the loft and lie checked on my clubs after putting them through hitting these rocks. Your 2019 Defending Champion: @sirchunksalot 2019 Long Drive Champ: @HardcoreLooper After 1 year and a month, we're back like we never left! For the third year running we put away our meticulously engineered tour balls to go back in time to a more simple day, the day where we played bargain basement priced artisanally crafted rocks. In other words the finest budget golf balls made by the likes of Pinnacle, Callaway, Wilson, and the quintessential Top Flite. Get ready to have your fillings rattled, your drivers tested, and your shot making ability thrown aside like the iron you just chunked 50 yards short of the green. The past two challenges have been awesome and have taken a life of their own. Friends and memories have been made. I want to thank you guys that keep coming back year after year to take part and you new contestants as well. Your participation makes this competition special and it really wouldn't be possible without you. As always this is a member run challenge, which means there are no sponsors and the official prize is bragging rights. This is for fun and a way that we all can play a round of golf together in different places at different times. Now onto the fun part...what's new for 2020! The HRC planning committee has decided to make a couple of tweaks for this year. New award for most rounds played/submitted for score ***naming rights are open for the award( Rockstar, Hands of Granite, etc.) Classic Rock (Molitor) vs. New Age (Nitro) Which era was better? Will there be a trend in the scores where classic rocks score better than new rocks? Date of manufacture and whether or not the golf ball is still in production considered for placement into classic rock vs new age Official Rules: Rounds must be played from July 1 to July 31 You must use an approved hard rock for your 9 hole round to count. Picture of rock(s) used. Rule of thumb: Ball must be a 2 piece surlyn covered rock. Any ball with "soft" in it's name will DQ your round. You may play as many times as you wish, best 9 holes submitted counts for score. Need to include handicap, slope, and course rating for posting score. 9 holes must include at least one par 5 and one par 3. xOldBenKenobiX
I forgot to take videos this morning, we played 18 holes at Taylor meadows. Play the entire back nine with the Nike SuperFar ball. Here are my drives with it. To be fair the 277 hit the cart path twice. Incredibly enough I was able to get some spin out of that ball a couple of times. For the front nine I played a Dixon earth, I picked up when I was helping one of my partners look for his ball. I have never heard of this ball before. The drive on 3 was a massive slice by the tee box of 8. Pretty good distance, my longest "pure" drive of the day. In the par 3 6th, I hit a very nice shot in with a couple of feet of the hole, and still missed the putt. 26 inches from the tip of the putter to the grip. Drove the to the fringe of the 8th hole, it seems that I hit a rock or a sprinkler head, because my ball "jumped" from the end of the fairway towards the green, I am not complaining of being lucky. I 3 putted. on our last hole, the 9th, I went for the green as it was only playing 240. Straight in the water, I took a penalty and played a Nitro Golf Spalding Molitor, Orange that my buddy picked up from the woods earlier. Drove my penalty drop short of the green and pitched in a couple puts later and I got a 6 I averaged 195 yards of the tee on all holes that were not par 3s. We played from the whites, My 98 was the better score by 10 shots. I hope to at least get honorable mentions on this prestigious, but brute competition. I am going to try to play again Sunday, if my wrists are not swollen anymore. My partners. Justin, Chris Perustki and the other Chris. as well as my self. Before I lost it to the pond, that ball had gotten pretty beat up, even with the scuffs it was still holding up well. I played 8 full holes with it. I have played 18 holes with the same ProV1x before I could not use it anymore, because it was really bad. fixyurdivot
I played my second 9 hole round on Wednesday; this time at Beaverhead CG in Dillon, MT. I played 27 holes and chose the second nine for my HRC round. Rummaging through my selection of rocks, I chose a Pinnacle Rush - a found ball and one I've never seen before. It seemed the logical choice being that the course was not too crowded and I was in no rush. Not sure if it meets our hard rock requirements? Staged for liftoff... in three, two, one. I did not strike the ball as well as my first round but scored well. No KP's or LD's that better round #1. I'm starting to think these low end, often disparaged and made fun of balls, are my best fit ... simply can't argue the results . Using the formula in our IM thread, I calculate round 1 at net 35.43 and this round at 35.63... but maybe I have the slope portion goofed? I'm hoping to get at least 2 more rounds in before the contest concludes... maybe we need to extend the deadline as I haven't seen to many entries yet. RoverRick
Finally got a round completed in the HRC. Actually I was actually playing on Wednesday but that pesky job interfered and only played 6 holes. Later I determined that it was a non-conforming ball anyway. It was a Volvek Vivid, well it felt too good and spun too much to qualify for this. So I returned today with a found Titleist Velocity and a Top Flight more roll, and a Srixon Marathon. First, I have a confession to make. My official handicap 14.1 and a 12 on these tees at my home course. This is (was) a true handicap until 2 weeks ago. At that point, I got to play golf once or twice a week for the last 3 years and a 2 year absence before that. I would often go two weeks without touching a club. About 2 1/2 weeks ago, I had a bit of a job change, and now I am home most days and, in theory, I can play golf everyday. In reality, I have played just one round during the week but have gotten to go to the range and practice on the course 3-4 times in between phone calls and text messages. I played 6 holes the other day and then spent 2 1/2 hours sitting under the trees talking and texting. My game has improved drastically, but I have not played complete rounds or turned in scorecards during this period. I played in a Shamble tournament last weekend (Lost by 1/2 a point) and played in the Men’s Scramble last night. We won the Scramble at -7 and used 3 of my drives, 7 approach shots and I made 6 of the birdie putts. However, still no scorecards to turn in and adjust my handicap. I have also developed a baby fade fairway finding driver shot that averages 230 and close to 80% accuracy. I can hit a draw that goes 260 with recently 4 going 272-275 but maybe 20% of fairways. Last Friday morning I went and hit tee shots only off all the driver holes. I hit the two balls, the fade and the draw. I also put together some hybrids with 1/2 shorter shafts to stop over drawing them. That has been why my handicap was 12-14. Note I didn’t say averages 260 or 270. It probably averages closer to 160 than 260 because they are either awesome or embarrassing and rarely in between. Last Friday I shot an 84 trying to hit the draws. Today with just focusing on getting in the fairway was a 73. So my scorecards:My lone birdie was almost an ace. Landed about 3’ from the pin and hit the pin on the bounce and dropped on the lip and rolled about a foot. Of course if it missed the flag than I may have had a 20’er coming back. I had just 29 putts and 6 of those were in the 10-15’ range, but I didn’t sink any of them. This could have been because these balls sound so clickey off the face but don’t go as far as they sound. Putts tend to just sorta wonder off close to the hole. Course Rating and Slope from these tees is 69.4/116. And officially I am a 14.1. But I expect this to change once I post more scores. RoverRick
Nice round! I suspect this score and KP is our clubhouse leader and will be tough to beat. Thanks. I could definitely tell a difference in the ball performance. I only short sided myself once and that caused the bogey on 2. Well, the poor drive that was 6” from OB and leaving myself 227 yards in the rough from the flag probably had more to do with it than the ball quality and pin location. I also was extremely lucky because the home owner didn’t have a fence and had recently mowed about a foot inside the white stakes. 6” right was OB. 6” left was 8” deep grass. I got my 4 wood on it and to within 30 yards but only had 10’ of green. Ended up with a 30’er for par. I was actually happy with just a bogey there. Other than that I missed the green on the side where a ball that won’t check up didn’t hurt me. I also hit more loft and harder than usual to compensate on my approach shots. I normally hit a 3/4 iron shot into the green. I tend hit it straighter and have better distance control. russtopherb
Walked 9 holes with my 14yo today at Rochester Golf Course, it’s 4830 yards from the whites and 114.0/64.0. I ended up with a 47 and thankfully we both ended the round on a high note by both parring the 108 yard 9th hole. My ammo of choice for the round was this amazing Michelob Ultra branded round white thing. I really hesitate to call it a golf ball. My god it was terrible. No idea who makes it but they should be ashamed of themselves. It lasted until the 7th hole, when I pitched it directly into a water hazard to the left of the green. I ended the round with this classic, the Top Flite XL Distance. My drive on 8 was actually really good with it - dead straight but it was a low bullet that ran right through the rough to the tree line on a dogleg right. Shockingly I actually spun this sucker back with my PW on the last hole. I’m as shocked as you are. You can see the pitch mark on the left side of the pic. My son stuck his even closer, the little bugger. It was a hot and sweaty round, but I was out there with my son so it was a great time. fixyurdivot
It just occurred to me... all Cobra Connect Challenge testers should be required to play and record one HRC round . @GolfSpy STUDque how about a new challenge? Perhaps the best 9 hole score, long drive, and KP, using only irons tee to green. @JohnSmalls has the list of qualifying rocks. @edingc, @B.Boston, @daviddvm, @GB13, and @Headhammer... think you've got what it takes? russtopherb, tchat07, STUDque and 6 others 4 3 2 Quote G410 Plus, 9 Degree Driver G400 SFT, 16 Degree 3w G400 SFT, 19 Degree 5w ZX5 Irons 4-AW Glide 2.0 56 Degree SW (removed from double secret probation ) ER5v Putter (Evnroll ER5v Official Review) AI-One Milled Seven T CH (Currently Under Product Test)
