A Day at Bandon

Recommended Posts

Gonna have a day at Bandon in the fall. What course there is a must play? Would love to hear why you like/ dislike each course... Gonna play on course and the Preserve before I head back to where we are staying on the coast.

Update:

Absolutely the best!!

Pacific was a beast with the wind in the morning. Especially the back 9.

Played way better at Bandon. Loved the blend of seaside and inland holes!

This may not help you much, but it depends heavily on the weather on the given day and what kind of game you play. If you play the ball in the air and it the wind isn't blowing, I would suggest you will enjoy Bandon Dunes or Pacific Dunes most. Much of Bandon Trails is more sheltered from the coastal winds by the trees, but it is my least favorite Bandon course. If you play the ball on the ground, don't miss Old MacDonald. I suspect the Sheep Ranch will be similar to it, but it is new and I haven't played it. If you have a chance, also play the Sandpines course up in Florence and/or Bandon Crossings south of town. Both allow carts, so If you are worn out from walking Bandon, they are a good break.

I've only played Bandon and Pacific.  I actually enjoyed Bandon a bit more overall.  Part was due to the weather being a bit nicer for that round, but more holes were memorable to me at Bandon than Pacific dunes.

The Preserve was definitely the most fun at a par 3 i think I'll have.  Absolutely worth it as well.

Pushing hard to get back there to play more if that tells you anything.

I appreciate the replies! So I booked and tried for Pacific and Sheep Ranch but SR is closed. So I have PD in the morning and Bandon Dunes in the afternoon.

Can't wait to report back!

Have fun!  I hope you have great weather.  It rained all night before we played Bandon, but stopped raining an hour before we teed off, and it was beautiful.

That's a great 1 & 2 combo.  Highly recommend taking a caddie. I played as a single a couple years ago, and the guys in my group had one, and he was extremely helpful in pointing the way, showing where to aim and where to miss. For the most part the course is in front of you, but there are more than a couple blind shots, and local knowledge is very helpful.

Thanks for that insight. Just finished booking a double bag for both rounds!

Bandon is truly unreal. A few buddies and I went two last summer for the Solstice. Basically, you play all four courses (SR was still being constructed) in a single day. We were fortunate to lay the courses in this order: Pacific, Trails, Old Mac, and Dunes. We walked over 26 miles that day but it was totally worth it. Caddies were super helpful throughout the course of the day and we ran into Roger Clemens, JR Smith and Deron Williams while they were participating as well!

Our only regret was that we didn't spend more time out there. Can't wait to get back out to the west coast. Great to hear you had an equally enjoyable experience!

Nice pics...You played the two you should have. First two which set tone for the others to follow. On paper Pacific is rated the best. I loved Old Mac. Haven't played Sheep yet so a return due.

Just got back from a 4-day trip at Bandon. Played all 5 (6) courses. My preference is:

  1. Bandon Dunes - most playable. If you're hitting the ball well, you'll score well. If you're hitting the ball poorly, you'll still be okay. Most importantly, I had the most fun playing this course. Actually, we had a blast.
  2. Sheep Ranch - The views are incredible. Also had a lot of fun playing this course, but, there are definitely some holes that are pretty plain. The holes on the ocean though make up for this. Definitely worth playing. I actually played it twice, once in the morning, once in the afternoon. The wind picks up considerably in the afternoon, and 3 of the last 4 holes play straight into the wind.
  3. Pacific Dunes / Bandon Trails (tie) - With Pac Dunes, you get incredible views. With Trails, you get a different set of incredible views. Both are great tests for your golf game. I didn't have as much playing these, as, if you're not hitting it great, these courses will punish you.
  4. Old Mac - Nothing against Old Mac, I had fun playing it, just doesn't quite have the wow factor as the other courses. But, definitely worth playing if you have time.

I'll throw in Preserve, it's a ton of fun, and has some incredible views as well. If you're going to Bandon for a trip, Preserve is a great course to begin the trip on, get familiar with the speed of the greens, and how the greens break.

We stayed on-property, at the Lily Pond. It was perfect, and close to the Lodge. Any questions about food or lodging, I'd be more than happy to answer.

Nick,

I am in the infant stages of planning a trip so I will probably have a ton of questions if it becomes a reality.

Your trip sound almost exactly like the plan I am thinking of.

Would you mind giving me a  ballpark of the total cost you ended up at.

I am going to try to take my daughter if I can swing it

Glad you had a good trip

Thanks

Bill
