Popular Post cksurfdude
EXPUTT REAL-TIME PUTTING SIMULATOR Official MGS Forum Member Review – by cksurfdude July, 2020 A huuuge shoutout and thank you to ExPutt and to the MGS Spies for entrusting me with what I hope is one of the more popular tests of this season!! * Note: this Intro is a part of the overall review process but is broken out from the final product review. PERSONAL INTRO Currently 64, retired, picked up the game for the first time in the Summer of ’09 at age 53. Before golf I used to surf and windsurf a lot; growing up there was skiing during the winter and sailing during the summer as my main activities. I played a little tennis with my father when I was younger, just hitting the ball back and forth (never learned to serve) .. otherwise no ball sports. I’d describe my golf game as a typical recreational golfer, I guess; that is … hit some good shots, hit some .. ummm .. needs more work kinda shots; can make a par here and there, make some doubles and sometimes worse, but able to pull off a bunch of bogeys. Have not (yet?) broken 90; 9 hole rounds this year so far range from +4 (yea!) to +21 (ouch!) vs par. I don’t maintain a handicap (don’t play competitively outside of one or two charity outings per year) .. so my scoring goal is to consistently play right around bogey golf, and then start to work my way down into the 80s. As far as putting – I average right about 18 putts and 1.4 x 3-putts per 9 holes (more details below). “A Game Within A Game”… You may have read or heard that quote attributed to Ben Hogan. When I first started playing, putting literally confounded me. I had no concept of “break” and had no understanding of why the ball was rolling off in all the wrong directions it was; nor any concept of “speed” and so no understanding of why the ball was still so far from the hole (long or short). An introduction to the basics at a 3-Day Leadbetter golf school helped get me started on the right track; then I took some short game lessons that included some coaching on putting stroke, but overall it seemed that putting-specific instruction was not commonly taught and it was more up to the individual to work it out on their own. And putting is hard! My current putter… My EvnRoll ER5 is self-selected; I’ve been through a few club fittings (irons, driver, whole bag) and a putter fitting in the past .. so I understand the process and some of the things to look for. After reading all kinds of good things about EvnRoll putters on MGS, about a year and a half or so ago I went into a PGA Tour SuperStore to try out a few different types … and ended up liking the ER5. The putterhead felt nicely balanced throughout the stroke to me, and it looked to me like I was rolling putts pretty smoothly. I bought the 33” / 385g model; I’ve since added an extra 4g of lead tape onto the outer flanges. This putter has 25° toe hang – I have an arcing putter stroke (according to the old iPing app it’s a “medium” arc). Previous putters in play included the MLA XDream Tour – which is now the dedicated ExPutt practice putter; a Machine M2A Converter widebody (looks cool .. I know, I know…); a short-lived attempt at using a long (not belly) Cleveland putter with a TFI face (I liked that part) and for several seasons prior to all that an Odyssey #1-Wide with a SuperStroke grip. My putting process… My underlying philosophy = “The first putt is 90% speed; the second putt is 90% line.” (Heard that in a Golf Science Lab video.) This is not to say I’m not trying to sink that first putt, but that I try to keep things simple on the course (despite my mathematical / analytical background and nature) … and to be realistic, ie. considering the PGA Tour pros’ average 50-50 make is at about 8 feet … my 50-50 is gonna be from way closer. I guess I use a combo of feel and mechanics. To set up any putt I will… try to get a handle on the overall slope of the green between my ball and the cup as I’m approaching the green; stand behind my ball and crouch down for a more specific read (rarely walk around behind the ball); make an estimate, using an “express” version of AimPoint Express, of the level of slope at the cup and pick a target spot; visualize a line that will get my ball to that spot; line up my ball to roll to the apex of that line; estimate a speed that will roll the ball along my line to my spot; rehearse 2 or 3 strokes that should impart the right effort to the ball to roll it at the desired speed to the desired spot; lean over the ball to set the putterhead's line in-line with the ball’s alignment line, then set myself up as square to that alignment line as I can; take a last look at my target spot then back down at the ball still trying to “see” the line to my intended spot; and finally… stroke the ball as closely as I can to the rehearsal swings. I try to be cognizant of.. (a) starting the putting stroke “low and slow”; (b) calibrating the length of the backswing to the length of the putt and (c) keeping a steady One-Two overall tempo. So a whole lotta stuff going on there! * Bottom Line: * If I stroke the putt on my intended start line at the intended speed, then I consider that a good putt. ...A side note about speed: I’m familiar with the idea of 18 inches past the hole – and never ever never short – but… I saw a video from Scott Fawcett about his DECADE System, and was particularly interested in a segment about putting. He admitted it was not an exhaustive study but from what he observed of top collegiate golfers and their putt dispersion in length past the hole – he concluded that hitting the ball slightly softer .. and, yes, having the occasional short putt .. but only inches short .. would move the central tendency, or median, of all your putts closer to the hole. Makes sense to me. What I want to improve in my putting… If you consider that every putt starts out as a straight putt then ALL of the basic mechanics of a putting stroke become important to practice and improve, but for me the primary objective now is – Goal #1 = 3-Putt Avoidance. Pure and simple. If I can 2 putt every hole – from anywhere, on any type of green – and drop the occasional 1 putt then I’ll be a happy putter. I know 3-putts happen but the goal is to minimize them. #2: Distance Control. This directly supports Goal #1, imho, so to me another way of saying “3-Putt Avoidance” is to say “Leave the first putt ridiculously close to the hole every time!” #3: Green Reading. I put this ahead of “Starting Line” as I tend to play the totally wrong break at least once every 9 holes. Not saying my stroke and start line is perfect every time .. there are definitely a few pulls or pushes in there .. but it’s reasonably good and getting better over time. Plus … one of the more problematic putts for me are sidehill, from either side of the cup (ie. uphill side is either behind me, in my putting stance, or in front of me). #4: Starting Line – including face angle and path at impact. Although I am constantly working on this during my basement practice sessions, I feel at this point I’m slightly more competent with this skill vs the ones listed above. #5: Increase Putts Made from 8 feet and in. Yes.. I know the PGA Pros have an average 50% make rate at 8 feet, and yes.. and I am waaay under that. But I want to improve! And, of course: overall tempo, face opening and closing rotation, stroke length and speed for different putt distances, lie angle change (did you know some golfers tend to either lower or raise their hands very slightly during the putting stroke?). Some current putting stats… In starting to look at 3-Putt Avoidance, I aggregated my putting numbers from 22 rounds so far this season where I kept track of number of putts (played more but did not track score nor # putts). * Note I play mostly 9-Hole rounds so where I played 18 I split that into 2 x 9-holes. Here’s where I’m currently at (data thru 07-18-2020) – 22 x 9 holes # 3-Putts / 9 # Putts / 9 Score vs Par Average.. 1.41 17.91 +10.45 Hi.. 4 20 +21 Lo.. 0 15 +4 Median.. 1 18 +10 Anyway, not too terrible overall but there’s always room for improvement (amiright?). FYI… I included median as my thinking with respect to golf scores is it may be a helpful indicator vs average; median is the place in a set of numbers where there are an equal number of values both higher and lower (think of literally the middle). Here’s the breakdown by incidence of 3-putts over the 22 x 9-hole rounds – # 3-Putts / 9 # occurrences Avg putts / 9 Avg vs Par Median putts / 9 Median vs Par 0 5 16.60 +11 16 +10 1 7 17.00 +9 17 +8 2 7 18.86 +10 19 +11 3 2 20.00 +15 20 +15 4 1 20.00 +9 20 +9 Not surprisingly, even with a small data set, you can see a general positive correlation between the increasing number of 3-putts with an increasing number of Average Putts / 9 holes and of Average Score vs Par. (.. just don’t ask me what happened on that one 4 (Four!) x 3-putt day, though .. guess I was hitting the ball well enough that it counteracted all the extra putts..!) Then… I did a little deeper dive into some specifics of my most recent (as of this writing) 18-hole round. If we accept this set of putts as representative of all my current putting in general (this was on very fast and very contoured greens so a reasonable data set, I think), we see… Hole # Putt 1 # feet Putt 2 # feet Putt 3 1 42.50 10.00 1 foot 2 16.25 2.50 - 3 27.50 10.00 6 inches 4 7.50 1.25 - 5 27.50 0.25 - 6 23.75 1.00 - 7 3.75 1.00 - 8 12.50 - - 9 3.00 1.50 - 10 15.00 1.00 - 11 28.75 1.50 1 foot 12 16.25 1.00 - 13 27.50 2.00 - 14 20.00 5.00 - 15 32.50 2.50 3 inches 16 10.00 0.50 - 17 11.25 0.25 - 18 8.75 0.50 - Avg.. 18.57 2.46 Hi.. 42.50 10.00 Lo.. 3.00 0.25 Med.. 16.25 1.25 Total ft 1st putts 334.25 Total ft made... 39.25 %tge made... 11.74% Did not note whether 1st putt was long/short/low/high. Yes, there are 4 (FOUR!) 3-putts but remember I split 18 into 2 x 9-hole rounds. This 18-hole round had 39 putts. I highlighted one number here which kinda surprised me – that is: for all first putts (that I missed, which was 17/18) my average leave from the hole was only about 2 ½ feet. Happy with that! Note, though, that the median leave is half that at 1.25 ft .. indicating there were a few much higher 2nd putt distances .. which you can see in the detail above with 2 leaves @ 10 ft and 1 @ 5 ft. So there’s work to do on those 20 feet and longer lag putts (gee no surprise there!). Not sure how these numbers compare to the aggregate of all recreational bogey golfers, but that “Total feet made” stat looks low … so one goal is to improve upon this over time. So the main idea here is to get some sort of reference points regarding… How close am I leaving the 1st putt, from any starting distance / any slope? How good am I at sinking 2nd putts, from any starting distance? How, let’s call it, efficient is my putting in terms of # feet of putts made vs total first putt distance? Which (finally!!) brings us to… Using the ExPutt… I don’t belong to a private club, and the munis near me do not have good short game practice areas. One muni does have a decent practice green with some slope on it but it’s always busy. So now I can just pop down to the basement, turn on the TV screen, fire up the ExPutt cam and set up some putting practice!! fixyurdivot, MDGolfHacker, MaxEntropy and 12 others 13 2 Quote WITB of an "aspiring" play-ah ... Popular Post PMookie
PMOOKIE’S Exputt Simulator INTRODUCTION “Howdy, folks. The park’s closed, the Moose outside should’ve told you.” I’m starting my Intro with that because I feel like that’s what we should’ve been told upon starting 2020! To be selected for an opportunity like this to test a putting simulator that can be used anywhere, seems to me to be the perfect item to review seeing as how I’ve been home from work since March 16th!!!! Here’s a little bit about me: I live in NE Louisiana, but I grew-up in SE Michigan, college at App State for undergrad, then LSU for grad school. I began golfing very young by going with my Dad to Pat’s Par 3 in Ypsilanti, MI. Pat’s is no longer its name, but I’m sure a LOT of you have heard the name it is now: Miles of Golf. My Dad was a HS golf coach, and I’d go to their practices to ride the cart, hit some balls, and to eat a Hostess pie when we got done! My Dad told me that once I could hit the ball far enough where the Par 3 was easy for me, he’d let me play on the course where the HS played, Green Oaks in Ypsilanti. I drove a 200 yard Par 3 one day, and I’ll never forget the words I heard following that: “Well, looks like you’re ready!” I only golfed in the summer as I played every sport under the sun, and golf came after swimming, tennis and baseball during the summer time. Golf was rarely played. In grade school, a buddy of mine and I started to play, and I played my first tournament, the Ann Arbor Jr Open when I was 13. I didn’t play golf in HS until I transferred schools my Jr year and they didn’t have soccer, so I tried out and got the 5 spot. In college, I became hooked! I worked at Washtenaw CC during the summers, and classmates worked at Barton Hills CC in Ann Arbor, so we would switch off where we would play each Monday. We’d travel the A2 area playing on weekends as well. At App, we had some amazing Mountain courses, so fraternity brothers and I would go once-a-month somewhere to play when it was warm. I coached HS golf for a number of years, and to this day, I usually play with kids I used to coach. Fast forward to now, and golf is my sole extracurricular activity. I’ve worked my way down to a 5.7 GHIN, and if I ever became good at my short game, it could be 2 strokes lower. I really love the game, and it is my “release” during the week. It’s how I decompress. As far as the full swing goes, it’s a work-in-progress. I’m 6’5” tall, so at 51 I can still hit it a long way. I have never been shy with driver in my hand... Once I get to the top, she’s coming down with a great tug! Funny, I hit the ball longer now than I did in college! Technology! I hit my driver, fairway, and hybrid pretty good, hybrid being the most consistent, and irons are really coming along. I love my wedges. I’m very confident with them, and I generally play to a distance so that I’m hitting full wedge into the green as my approach. Now, for putting........ I used to say I was the worst putter on Earth. I never made anything... I never practiced it. When I went to a course, I went to play. I very rarely every worked on putting. Still don’t, until Exputt... I’m like most golfers and bought my putter off the rack, mainly choosing it by its price and feel. I never had a putter that cost me over $100 until just a few years ago. When I began taking lessons from a former player’s brother, the Top PGA Teacher in Louisiana, I had never been fitted for a putter. His guys fitted for Edel, so one day I decided to see what it was all about. Wow. My putter at the time was aiming WAY high, and WAY left. I bought the Edel and played it for a few years. I never was consistent with my speed with it, so doubt started to trickle in. I took a chance and called SeeMore, and ended-up doing a “virtual fitting” for the M5HT that I have now (write-up on the fitting is here on MGS). I’ve been playing it for 2 years now, and I’ve gone through a thousand grips. My path is inconsistent, my distance judgment is still atrocious, and I don’t have confidence in my stroke or set-up. I went through AimPoint with my former teacher, so I can find a line with the best of them, I just can’t find the speed, or consistency in the stroke itself. I don’t keep any stats on putting myself, so all I have is what is on Golfshot, the GPS app I use for every round I play. Currently, I average 1.86 putts per hole. That’s not only due to my inconsistent stroke and lack of speed control, it’s also due to the fact that I don’t chip the ball close enough to the hole to “tap-in”.... Ultimately, since I don’t have a lot of stats for my putting performance on-course, I’m going to have to see how my putting average improves after having the Exputt around for a month or two. First impressions-wise, I’m blown away. Set-up is a breeze, the mat is a really nice quality. It reminds me of a SCUBA wetsuit in a way, but more pliable. The “bumper” is basically gray “memory foam”. Really quiet when the ball hits it, and the ball only comes back maybe a foot even on the longest “putts”. I still haven’t finished all of the instructions since I’ve been in contact with Mo to help answer some questions. The accuracy of the unit seems to be spot-on, and it is NOT a video game where once can just hammer putts and they will go in the hole. Too hard, and it’s not staying-in! I’ve posted my pictures of the unboxing already further-up in this thread, and I’ve been posting pics of my current set-up, but I’ll add a couple here anyway. Lastly, Mo has been awesome. The resources available to us from those “inside” has been great so far. Very supportive. I’m very excited to see how I can use the Exputt to improve my on-course results. I haven’t quite figured-out how best to do this yet, but I think I have an idea of what needs to be done... If you saw the Chris Como show with DeChambeau and his coach, it’s along the lines of what Bryson said there.... Well. That’s it for my Intro.... I look forward to the next month of testing, and seeing how my game is affected!!!! cciciora13, yungkory, MDGolfHacker and 9 others 12 Quote Driver: Ping G430 Max 9*, Ping Tour 70X Fairway: Ping G425 15*, Ping Tour 70X Hybrid: Ping G425 22*, Ping Tour 80X Irons: Ping i230 4-GW, TT DG X100 Wedges: SMS 50D/54V/58DModus 130 stiff, +1” Putter: EAS 1.0 Ball: Titleist 2023 AVX

Popular Post cnosil
Once the testers started posting, it was quickly realized that there are a lot of different options with this product and each tester could go in different directions. Based on this, the powers that be made the executive decision to spend a little time in each mode and report on that aspect of the product. Last week was the settings and setup of the product. This week we start to dive into using the actual product to evaluate our putting. Lots to talk about so lets get started! ExPutt Practice Mode Evaluation Depending on who you are, you may believe that driving and distance is far more important to scoring. I contend that even with a great tee shot you can total blow a hole once you get on the green. Exhibit 1: Ernie Els at the 2016 masters. Outside of the opening hole of the Ryder Cup or a hole in one, players don’t generally react to great tee shots. But roll in a long putt and the fist pumps start Some players are just pumped to be on the green putting whether they make them or not. Now that we have established that putting is important and can allow you to really let loose and show some excitement, let’s take a look at this product. What is practice mode You are able to practice your sense of distance on a smooth, flat green. There are several settings that you can set to tailor how practice mode will operate. You can select Green Speed, Practice green, Distance Mode, and Max Distance. In this mode the practice Greens don't change anything about how the practice mode operates; they just provide scenery. On the screen, you will be able to find out information on the speed, path and impact angle of the putter, as well as the speed and direction of the ball. With appropriate knowledge, it is possible to evaluate if your putter is a good fit for your stroke. On the left side of the screen you will see (working top to bottom) how long you have been practicing, how many putts you have taken, You will see putter path and face angle diagram, kind of a distribution graph of your puts and then an animation of the putter. On the right you will see ball speed, launch direction, total distance, putter path, and face impact angle. Once you are in practice mode, you can also elect to do a putting analysis that will measure and report on a 30-putt session. Analysis will require putts from 5-50 feet. At the end of analysis session, a menu comes up to tell you that the session has been complete (8 analysis sessions are needed for a report). Realism/On Screen Graphics As you can see from the photos that have been posted, this product doesn’t present a photo realistic environment. That said, it doesn’t need too. The stroke details provide necessary information to help the player see what they are doing with their stroke. The biggest issue with the product for me has been the recognition of the putter and having the system generate the club specific (path and face angle) information. Additionally, the graphics may extend beyond the edges of the screen. Per the documentation, you need to change the screen mode on your television to fix this issue. I was able to do this on one of my TVs but not the other. The good thing is that the information that is cut off isn’t critical information. Fun Factor The big question is does practice mode hold your interest? At this point in time, I would have to say yes. Most days I spend time in my den working on my putting stroke. Due to size constraints, this is typically limited to face control and setup drills. Since I received the ExPutt, I am spending equal too or more time practicing my putting and I find the generated information. Right now, it is pegging the Awesometer Ease of use Practice mode is pretty straight forward. Put the ball in the appropriate area on the mat (between the two black lines shown below) and try to roll the ball the correct distance and hole the putt (note, I was using a wedge in the video since I had already taken my putters upstairs). Navigating the menus, understanding some of the result numbers, and analysis mode is a big confusing. The documentation is the bare minimum to get the product working and explain the basics of each mode. Some things aren’t explained very well like the captured metrics and what they really indicate and what is considered "good" Comparison to other “similar products” In practice mode, the skills that are being worked on are start line and distance control. While there isn’t a directly comparative product, ball returns, gates, yardsticks, and putting mats would be the closest products. Many of those options can even be found cheaply and don’t take up much space. When looking at longer top-rated putting mats, the price difference narrows significantly. What separates the ExPutt from its competition is that you can practice putts up to 50’ and select a variety of green speeds in your home and in a small space. Does it translate to the course? What I have noticed as I have been practicing with the ExPutt is that my tendencies do seem to be represented when I am using the product. Basically, as putts get beyond 30’ I miss short. What I have been learning with the product is that my stroke length has been way to short for these putts. I have only played 27 holes since I have obtained the product and my putts are definitely getting to the hole but they seem to continue past the hole. At this point it is too early to say if the product is helping me on the course. Putting approaches (feel vs. mechanical; have to be on a real green) As I read golf forums, I often see people commenting that they do things by feel or that they are mechanical in the way they approach the golf swing or that aids like gates or mats don’t help because you need to be on a real green. What I see with this aid is that you can be very mechanical and put a ruler next to the mat and use it to know how long of a stroke to use or you can work on the feel of how long of a stroke to use. As for having to putt on the green to get the right ball reaction, I fall into the camp that this isn’t true; greens have a speed they roll and this product will enable you to simulate any speed green. Basically, whether you are a feel or mechanical based player you should be able to find benefit from this product. The only real drawback is that you can’t visualize the distance to the hole since a TV is a 2D space; if this is your limitation your only method of practice can be on an actual green. Putter/Ball usage: I have run through a variety of putters (with and without inserts) and balls while testing this product. The only issue is that darker/matte balls or balls with dark truvis patterns don’t always get picked up by the camera. This is why the documentation says to use a clean white golf ball. That pretty much sums up practice mode. Golfspy_CG2
Week Two Contest: Challenge Mode. Whoever has the highest score in any one session of the mode will be declared the winner. You can do as many sessions as you'd like. Challenge Mode, you are on a 9 hole putting course. You putt from three different locations on each hole. You get three putts from each location to either make it or get it within CONCEDE mode by the friendly lady rules official. I think concede is anything inside two feet. To be honest I was too busy looking at how I missed most time to catch the outer limits of it. If you make or get your first putt conceded you get points and move onto the next location. If you fail to make or get within concede distance, you get a big FAIL on that portion of your scorecard. Each hole gives you a score from each location. So those three scores combine to be your score for that hole. You then proceed for 8 more holes. Who said golf was not dangerous. Ha A session of Challenge Mode in the books this afternoon. I'll post some pics a video or two later. But it was a challenge for sure. After spending so much time last week on straight putts and only focusing on speed control, adding in the dimension of breaks and uphill/down hill was a humbling experience. Some pics and will upload some videos later These just show the main menu of the three modes to choose from and a shot of the main menu where you can set some basic parameters for the entire system. You can set these and leave them or change them anytime if you need I won't spoil the surprise of my score just yet goaliewales14, artful_golfer, MDGolfHacker and 6 others 7 2 Quote G430 Max 10K TSiR1 15.0 Aldlia Ascent 60g TSR2 18.0 PX Aldila Ascent 6og TSi1 20 Aldila Ascent Shafts R T350 5-GW SteelFiber I80 SM10 48F/54M and58K S159 48S/52S/56W/60B Select 5.5 Flowback 35" ProV1 Play number

You can set these and leave them or change them anytime if you need I won't spoil the surprise of my score just yet This should be a good challenge! To clarify the way this game mode works for everyone - you're on a 9-hole course, with three pin locations for each hole. Essentially works out to 27 opportunities to get points. You need to either get your putt to stop within 3 feet of the cup (at which point the game "concedes"), or hole the putt, and you get three chances at each pin location. If you get a concede on your first attempt, you get 10 points and move on to the next pin location. If you get it on your second attempt, 5 points. Third attempt, 2 points. If after three attempts you still haven't gotten close enough, you get 0 points. Additionally, if you hole the putt you get 3 bonus points (so for example, if you send your first attempt way past the cup, but then hole your second putt, you would get 8 points). Exputt recently hosted a contest on Instagram using this challenge, and the winning score was 255. Golfspy_CG2
Here's a look at a scoreboard to compliment Gavinski's very good explanation. Not my best work. But gives you an idea of how it's laid out. The number 1,2 or 3 is the putt that scored the points. A circle around the number is a made putt It would be a nice feature to have the distance of the putt holed or scored indicated I can tell you in my round my shortest putt was like 12 feet. About 90% of them were 20 feet or more.
