2020 Official Member Review: Exputt putting simulator

As some areas of the country head into the off season, I thought I’d give this review a bump.

it’s a great practice aid to keep that putting stroke grooved during the winter snd also s cool simulator to play some putting games on.

I received mine a little over a week ago now and love it. Very few things have drastically influenced my game so quickly - this and the Planemate are the two things that come to mind.

I'll preface this by saying I've never been on a Quintic or SAM or anything that measured my path and face angle. I'm sure the Exputt is not as accurate as those systems, but within the first 25 rolls I noticed a distinct pattern in my swing. I was pretty consistently 0.5 to 1.5 degrees in-to-out with my stroke, but my face angle tended to go anywhere from 0.1 degrees closed to something like 4 degrees open. Yikes. The face angle was basically reliant on my right side twisting the club closed at impact. This totally explains everything I was struggling with this year on the greens.

This new information led me down a rabbit hole that ended with me changing my putting grip. Previously, I had used an interlocking grip as a holdover from the days when I used that for my full swing clubs. After doing a little bit of reading, I ended up switching to a reverse overlap. Immediately my face angle because so much more neutral and repeatable.

I played Friday on a course that I only played once before this season - I hit 10 greens and had 34 putts. I did three-putt three times, but all three were from outside of 35 feet and one was a mishit because the ball was backed up to the collar. Most importantly, I had several putts stop in tap-in range, and I converted two birdie putts from inside 10 feet. To echo something @cnosil mentioned, I really have a decent feel for distance now, and I just walk off the distance and then let feel take over. This works out well since I walk to the pin to mark the position in Arccos anyway.

The reviewers were spot on. The practice mode has a lot of use, I'm not sure how much I'll use the other modes. I do need to get a better light over the mat as the "control buttons" are a little unresponsive. It's quick to power on and in less than 20 minutes I can usually roll 50-60 putts. I've practiced more in the past week than I have all season.

I have a brand new L.A.B. DF 2.1 putter coming in the next week or so, and I'm super excited to have all winter to practice with it on the Exputt.

Wow .. that is awesome to read!!

Happy that you're liking it and finding the data useful - that's pretty cool that you changed your grip and could see .. and measure .. an improvement 👍

I would suggest, though, not to ignore the other modes - yes the green uhh "reading" can seem a bit wonky, but they do provide another useful way to practice rolling putts.

Love seeing this.

And i agree with you on the practice mode, it really helped me diagnose my miss to the right.

As CK said.  The other modes are great as well.  Especially the play mode if you find a buddy or two to challenge over some beers.

Does this have the capacity for firmware upgrades in the future?  The forum has listed a lot of suggestions for improvements, and it would be great for current owners to benefit from future refinements/features

Good question, and one I don't know the answer to offhand (maybe someone who actually read the user manual can chime in 😂). The unit gets power via microUSB, but I didn't open mine up to see what pins it uses and if data transfer is possible. I will reach out to their social media team and see if they happen to know the answer.

As Gav said, good question.  I want to say no. But i will comfirm that with Mo—the founder.  I do know they have planned on a 2.0 version perhaps as early as next year.  But i don’t know the features or capabilities of it.

maybe @cnosil who has had several technical conversations with Mo, might already know that.

Whoever runs their Instagram account says yes. But I wouldn't count that as gospel - I'd wait to hear back from Mo.

I am sure anything is possible,  a question I thought, maybe asked,  but don't remember a specific answer.  I think we went down future releases and other things they are developing.

I'd agree with that, buuuut...

Otoh it's possible they could put a flash update on a micro drive to plug into the micro usb..?

(..and then the next question is.. if so, would it be a free upgrade?)

I actually prefer the other modes and not practice mode... I’d rather compete, like real golf, and try to one-putt/two-putt. Don’t forget to switch the seasons! Try the same stimp, but winter vs summer, etc.

I will continue to sing the praises for the Exputt. I went out yesterday with my brand new L.A.B. DF 2.1 and walked away with 28 putts. Since I started tracking and playing seriously last season (about 75 18 hole rounds now), this was the fewest number of total putts I've ever recorded (previously recorded 30 a few times).

I had a good day chipping, and I didn't hit a lot of greens, but still, there's something to be said about 28 total putts. Especially because my brother-in-law registered 38 total putts while he only hit one more green. Generally, he is a much better putter than me.

Anyway, I had never played this course before so I had to "calibrate" my swing on the practice green. I have the Exputt set to 10 speed, and I've rolled enough putts now to know what a 10-12 foot putt feels like at that speed. I simply set out three balls on a flat spot and paced out 10-12 feet and hit them to gauge the speed adjustments I would need (in this case, slower as the greens were wet, bumpy and sandy from aeration). I then hit a few 20-25 footers to check my "calibration" and was happy to see it worked out pretty well.

I'm really looking forward to my practice this offseason. Feeling like the new putter combo'ed with this could be a 2-3 stroke game changer for me come next spring!

That's a GREAT putting warmup!!

I don't do that often enough myself, and have gotten in trouble twice lately when the course greens turned out to be slower vs what I had been playing and practicing on.

And Congrats! on that hot putting round 👍👍

I really hope Exputt has some sort of sale for black Friday or the upcoming holidays. The Canadian dollar exchange rate is bad right now. $525 plus some likely import duties is getting pretty pricey. No details on their website about CDN shipping either.

If any of the testers want to part with their unit, feel free to send me a PM. 😉

I am not parting with mine; I am on mine about 30 minutes every evening. I still make some mistakes on the course but I love what it has done for my distance control.

I’ve had the ExPutt for almost a year I purchased last December.

So I went through a full winter and golf season using the ExPutt. Prior to that for 4-5 years I used a Puttist before it broke it, which measured distance via impact in distances of 1-50 feet, with 3 speeds and a couple of program variations. The ExPutt in my view will absolutely get you to teach yourself putting and we then teach ourselves how and what to improve at putting.

I’ve never posted to any my golf spy forums before but I did leave a comment on the ExPutt in the 2019 Editor Choice Awards about ExPutt. I no longer use any other mat.

https://mygolfspy.com/2019-editors-choice-awards/

The central issue as was mentioned before is translating ExPutt or for that matter Puttiest to on course game improvement, which it does no question. I was a member at a private club playing one course 90% of the time so it was easy to dial in a practice speed. Now I play a combination of private and public courses. So I run through a routine using speed 7 and 9. I also looked at a fair amount of PGA tour verses various handicap levels for example PGA tour versus 17 handicap data.

The 17 handicap at 5 feet average is 50% making the putt, tour players average 50% at 8 feet. Data shows outside of 16 feet a 17 handicap player will 3-putt more than 1-putt, that distance for Tour players is 2.0 at 34 feet where greater odds of a 3-putt verses a 1-putt.

Also putting data seems to point out that were face and path really starts to effect putts is 10 feet, a degree one way or another it’s missed. So without practicing with like an ExPutt its all guesswork, and you could be missing allot of putts and not know why you missing for years. Usally it’s a pull how though? Face or Path or both.

1)  I found I had to develop a -- varied practice routine.

2)      I had to practice a routine at two different speeds for me 7-9.

3)      I also go through my actual on course set up routine periodically in practice sessions ie go behind the ball get into set-up and so on. I believe Tiger had a routine they measured and timed by seconds and it didn’t deviate much, over two years.

4)      The only other modification not mentioned was, I stand on a section of carpet the same height as the matt. I prefer to stroke putts slightly ascending, and wanted to be absolutely level.

5)      There is three categories of putts I look at: 1) Short Putts Up to 10 feet with a new high chance of making the putt. 2) Consistent lag puts. Putting data shows outside of 16 feet a 17 handicap player will 3-putt more than 1 putt, that will change big time with practice.  3) Unexpected putts this were you start know it’s really working such as I’ve had downhill 30 foot putt with 6 feet of break and it goes in. I think we visualize distance correctly (like throwing a ball) but it doesn’t translate to putting without practice at least not consitentily.

This is the ExPutt practice routine I use to putt better on the course:

1)      Two sets: 20 putts at the 10 foot fixed number using both speeds, total 40 putts. I started at 8 out 20 made, highest was 19 out 20. First at speed 7 and then 9. This gets me under some degree of pressure, and even when you really improve lag putting your still going to get 5-10 foot putts.

2)      Two sets: 20 putts at the 10 foot random using both speeds, total 40 putts. I have no idea what distance of the next putt will be and creates pressure, and using two speeds.

3)      Two sets: 20 putts increasing from 5 to 50 feet. Using both speeds, total 40 putts..

4)      Two sets: 20 putts random setting from 5 to 50 feet. Using both speeds, total 40 putts..

In total about 160 putts, this gets me ready for must all putting scenarios I ran into on course. I try on every putt recall a putt and visualize the putt and then to feel the speed though I know in the back swing approximately the distance a putt will go.

I do occasionally 6 and 12 speed… Really slow and really fast and visualize uphill and downhill putts. I also use a sand wedge to practice putting, aligning the ball towards the toe of the putter and also specialty chipping shots using the tip of the putter, for just in the rough off the green.

The toughest question I saw I think was practicing in 2D verses 3D and so on.

For me it took a couple of sessions hitting trackman indoors to adapt. After almost 5 years of 2D putting first with Puttist now ExPutt, I believe it’s the reverse going from 2D to 3D it feels mush easier, you have a fair amount of time to visually dial in the distance on a real putt. Depending on how you at gauging distance, line and break and so on. 10 years ago I used paced off putts but now I see it and feel it and let it go.

Allot of tour pros practice putting distance control with their eyes closed I think Johnny Miller started it, Vijay may have done in tournaments, Paddrig talks about it and Sergio just won a tournament with his eyes closed. I do practice occasionally with my eyes closed just to test it, I believe after awhile you will putt in the total dark and hit the distance.

The only other weird thing I do is put alignment stick in the backyard at about 40 feet. So I can visualize distance, anything you could practice visualizing distance in the backyard would work. Bottom line you have to improve competence good stroke, tempo, speed and so on and then confidence starts increasing.

Wow. Congratulations.  Those are awesome numbers.  19/20 is very hard!  My best (a couple of weeks using Exputt is 40% made puts at 10’ with 9 Stimp. I think PGA Tour average is 40%, but they are playing faster greens with break. We’re hitting dead flat puts.

I like your strategy of Random vs. increasing and varying the speeds. I don’t know if I can hit 160 putts every night, though.

One reason I’ve varied speed setting was the difficulty going from fast greens to slower greens, its very easy for me to go from slow greens to faster greens.

I found if having to choose I would be vary the speed of sessions by two 7 to 9 or 8 to 10 then 10 footers followed random up to 50 feet – 40 putts. If you see 9 foot short or long on 30 plus putts then you might go with 30 or 40 foot fixed and dial it that range. I think it reads out to 100 feet not sure why that’s not tracked as a setting it could its unreliable outside say 60 feet, or matt issues hitting putts that hard.

ExPutt Improvement

Not sure if this was mentioned, the only -- major unseen putting variable with ExPutt that would make a major difference would be the launch angle of putts which effect roll, and direction. It’s probably not possible at this price point. SAM Putt Labs equates launch angle importance with direction and face angle. Sikk putters address that with consistent launch face angles, Ive never tried one or seen one in play.

Quintic Definition:

“The ideal launch angle (for most greens) is between 0.75 and 1.25 degrees. Slower greens (or greens that have a lot of grain) require up to 2 degrees of launch angle to get the ball up out of its resting position and riding on top of the grass.”

Sam Putt Labs:

“On fast greens a flat launch angle of the ball and initial top spin are preferred, to avoid skidding. Skidding is supposed to introduce errors in ball direction, -- in contrast a rolling ball is keeping the direction better. The factors influencing launch and spin are static loft of the putter, shaft lean at impact, vertical putter path at impact and ball position.”

This is why we talked about building a chart for various green speeds. Every stroke length should have a consistent ball speed/distance. At each course you get a baseline distance and see where that falls on your chart. If the greens are slower you look at the speed chart and know the stroke you need to make for the distance you have.

There are lots of potential features that could be added to the produce but as mentioned it would increase cost. To get launch you would probably need a side camera since the current camera location probably can’t see launch. Launch issues typically create speed control issues. If you struggle with speed on real greens but perform well here loft is probably a good place to start looking.

All putts skid; you just need the right amount. As you documented, you have to launch the ball and not hit it into the ground. Hitting into the ground will typically show up on launch monitors as straight but you would see actual roll going offline.

Yeah that would be nice, but... As @cnosil mentioned most likely outside the realm of an in-home simulator.

One other factor that would be a "nice to have" is impact location on the putter face - eg. towards the toe and high on the face, or towards the heel, or even close to dead center.

You're going to like the Exputt.  I've learned that the lower stimps are harder for me than the faster speeds.  I think that's because on a 7 Stimp I have to hit it harder, which means a longer back/forward swing, which means more room for error.

Two nights ago I putted 10' fixed distance.  At 7 Stimp I hit 44%, and at 9 Stimp I hit 64%.

FYI, on 2019 PGA Tour, pros made 42.9% of 10-footers and 80.2% of 5-footers.  That's with weather and reading breaks.  We can't compare our indoor perfect condition make percentages to that, but it is somewhat of a benchmark.

Indeed i do enjoy it. Being part of the test group, I’ve had it since June.   I enjoy the practice mode when working on my face control and challenge when working on pace.
