Women’s club for my wife?

Recommended Posts

I know very little about women’s clubs. Does anyone have any insight into what to buy? The problem is my wife is a “**** gender norms” type of lady and hates that all women’s clubs are pink or purple with flowers. Can a 115 lb girl play a men’s set since she like the way they look?

It's all on her height and strength. My wife plays men's R flex. She could always have lighter shafts put in, or cut them down an inch or two.

I guess the obvious answer would be to 'get her fitted' if possible.
I never really understood the whole 'mens v ladies' clubs divide.  Surely it just should be what works best for any given individual.

I'll second that. The end result of my wife's driver fitting was a 410 plus with a men's senior flex Alta 55g shaft. btw she is 75. She tried lots of different drivers and this gave her the best performance #s. Her 2 friends went to our club pro who put them into the new ladies Ping's without trying anything else (he doesn't have any other fitting carts). They might as well have picked ladies clubs by their favorite color at a big box store.

My wife was hit with the golf bug HARD 2 years ago, she is a girly Tomboy, 5'7 1/2", 145, loves power tools and guns, BUT, still feminine. Over the span of about 4 weeks, we went to PGA Superstore and had I her hit men's and women's clubs, we also tried Edwin Watts.  We ended up with PING LE women's 6 hybrid ,7-SW irons, + 1/2", men's PING G-410 4 & 5 Hybrid's senior flex , men's 1/2" short. 3 & 5 Wood PING Women's LE + 1/2" , Driver Men's Cobra F-8, Aldila 2KXV Blue, 44 inch, Senior flex.

Like most golfer's she loves to hit her driver, we tried my old PING G-30 SF TEC with a womens and men's senior flex, the Cobra with a senior flex beat out the PING in direction and dispersal control.

She actually enjoyed going to the PGA Super Store and seeing how little changes made a difference.

In one of our trips to the PGA Super Store in Palm Desert , saw a lady buying clubs based SOLELY on the club colors. Worker asked if she wanted to try  them, she said "No, these are pretty, I like them",,, she was in her 50-s early 60;s.

I think ladies clubs still exist because ladies still buy them.

My wife is the perfect example: she is 6’1, lefty and swings her driver around 75-80 mph on average. Could she be fit into any “men’s” clubs with a senior flex? Absolutely: was she even remotely interested in hitting any “men’s” clubs? Nope. Even though being lefty meant it was either TM Kalea’s or Ping Le’s: she was most concerned with how they looked, and then chose performance to decide between the “cute” ones. And my wife generally shoots in the mid-high 90’s: what most people would consider a serious golfer. But for her, how the clubs look was much more important than their performance. And her kalea’s look great in her hot pink Ogio bag strapped to her hot pink Clicgear cart. I point out that she probably gave up distance on her drives to play a “ladies” driver but to her it doesn’t matter...

Generally the only differences are that women iron sets are 6-PW with 3-5 in Hybrids and the drivers /3 woods are 12 and 16 degrees. And of course the shaft is different. We were at one of the Golf Clearance outlets to by her a new wedge when the owner cam over and asked if she was interested in some new clubs, she was not but I suggested that she try them anyway.  They promptly produced TM M2 6-PW with ladies spec shafts. Her old clubs were 25 yo Tommy Armour. She hit them, loved them and so I gritted my teeth and asked the price only to be pleasantly surprised $399.00. BTW she now has M2 4-5 Hybrids and Wilson d300 Driver and 3 wood. Her handicap came down by 5-6 shots since she had had them.

So the moral to the story is yes you can get normal looking clubs for a great price.
