2020 Official Member Review: SkyCaddie LX5 Watch

Recommended Posts

7 minutes ago, TCUFrog said:

So played my first round with the watch yesterday (sort of). I play every round with my Apple Watch on and it never bugs me, but after hitting 10-15 shots on the range I couldn’t wear the LX-5 and play at the same time.

Overall the feel while light felt bulky and was a major distraction to my eye sight when getting set up in my stance. It felt like even more of a distraction on the putting green. I think ultimately it had less to do with the size of the watch face and more to do with the thickness of the face. It stands almost a half inch tall off the wrist. The data it was providing was very valuable as this was my 3rd time playing the course, so I found a creative way to use this throughout the round. I walk and carry my bag most days, so slapping it on my bag was easy enough and I could review the yardage and slope right there on my bag quickly.

IMG_1668.JPG

I did not experience the delay in finding the course that some other reviewers have noted. It wasn’t fast but had the course pulled up within 2-3 minutes.

Short on course data review:
The front-center-back data was extremely helpful as I often use my bushnell V4 to get exact pin location and then miss that yardage by a bit and am off the back or short of the green if puns are tucked.

I also noticed I was playing quicker as I wasn’t having to pull my rangefinder out of its case or my phone out of my pocket on every shot.

I’m playing a brand new course in north Georgia this Friday and Saturday and will write up my full review of the watch based on those rounds because I think the ability to see the course details and slope will be very helpful on a new course.

If your not used to wearing big face watches, I can see how it could be distracting.  I would imagine wearing a watch like this one would not let you function!! 😂😂😉😉

That’s actually a great idea 💡 well done. 👍 And I agree, it’s not so much the circumference of the watch, but rather the thickness of it that takes a little getting used to.

Also, I noticed that if you go within the Menu, then go to ‘Info’ and scroll down to ‘GPS’ ... at the next screen you’ll see that it attempts to wakeup the GPS and that it’s status is ‘searching’. Once the GPS coordinates are located, when you go to play your round, it’ll locate you and the surrounding courses quickly.

Of the 3 devices I had out yesterday (SC, Arccos, Bushnell laser), the yardage results were sometimes radically different.

I didn't stress over it though, and shot a double bogey free 42, my 2nd best for this course on the front.  🙂  first time no dubs!  🙂

Brilliant way to wear it.  I will say first impression, it is more...invasive...on the wrist than my old garmin.   I did not notice it while playing though.

I also had no problem finding and downloading my course.  It all happened while waiting for the guy in front of me to take his approach shot.

I played about 5 holes yesterday with the new LX5 and I wanted to share my initial reaction.  Before I do, you should know that I currently use a Garmin S20 watch.  The S20 is basic as far as watches go, gives me distances to front, middle and back.  Gives me layup distances and distances to trouble (water or traps).  The screen is pretty small and it is only in black and white.  Again, nothing fancy but does everything you need it to do.

The LX5 is BIG!  Not only does it have a large circumference but it is also pretty tall off the wrist.  The LX5 did not find my home course at first.  I had to load it up three times for it to finally recognize the course.  Once it did, the screen light up very clear and bright.  I liked this a lot!!!  Everything was easy to see and I liked the instructional videos that Sky Caddie has on their website with regards as to how to use the watch.  I found it to be pretty easy once I watched the videos.

A few things I DON'T LIKE initially:

1.  Takes a long time to find courses

2.  Cannot receive text messages on this watch (my cheaper Garmin does)

3.  Would like to have a screen protector to guard against scratching the screen

4.  You need a subscription

Things I DO LIKE initally:

1.  Easy to see the screen

2.  Bright and clear

3.  I can zoom in on any hole or even the numbers if I want them to display larger

4.  Swipe controls work great

I will keep you posted as I play around with this more.

So this morning, I allowed the battery to drain all the way down to dead and then charged to see how quickly it would get back to 100% ... it. was. quick! Wish I had timed it, for what felt like 30 mins or so later, the watch was fully charged at 100%! I was very impressed.

It was at 100% this morning, have worn that watch all day while I worked from home and ran errands ... currently, it’s 94%. Have to be happy about that.

Played a full round today with this watch for the first time.  The pictures below are of number 3 at Maple Dale Country Club, a short par 3.  I had both watches and then I shot the flag with my Bushnell.  Not too shabby SkyCaddie.

The second picture is of a distance tracker.  This happened to be off of one of my better drives on the day.  This feature is pretty easy to use, you just hit the golf ball icon, then a button that says "mark".

After the round I synched the watch into my SkyCaddie 360 app to analyze the data.  This is a pretty cool feature but I need more rounds in there to really dive into the app.  I will keep you posted.

I just hopped on to say it's still got some juice since its initial charging on Sunday.

I've played two 9 hole rounds and fiddled with it a little.  It survived a few minutes of a downpour no problem.

It is big, yes.  It is massive compared to my Garmin which is basic and probably has a much smaller battery.  Funny it was mentioned a few posts ago about no face protector, yesterday I thought for a moment how a Swatch-guard would fit, lol, then decided that was dumb. 🤣🤷‍♀️🤣

It appears to be built with a hull and face much like my Samsung Frontier S3.  If it is the same materials and craftsmanship,  no worries.  That watch survived a Onewheel crash on the street at 21.7mph.  I was bloody as heck, my watch had minor scratches on the frame, none on the face 🙂

I was able to play 54 holes the last 2 days with the watch. Monday I was able to get 36 holes out of the watch. On my 51st hole it flashed the low battery but it was able to finish the round and died after the round when I was getting a drink. I have not worn a watch for a few years and I really like how this feels on my wrist. My initial thought was it felt heavy. But when it is on my wrist it feels very light and I do not notice it. My only error, and this is user error is that I had it set up to receive notifications. Lucky it never buzzed in my back swing.

Yesterday was only 18 holes but again the watch worked great. It is easy to see, easy to keep score if you want and I need to utilize all the functionality of the watch. Especially in tournament play when it is slow I feel I could get more information and that is always helpful.

I have to echo what a few testers are seeing regarding battery life during normal wear. I began Saturday, 8/22 with a full charge. I wore it Saturday evening/night to a graduation party, most of the day Sunday while doing chores around the house, I played 12 holes on Sunday, wore it while working at home and taking walks in the evening Monday and Tuesday.

This morning, 8/26, my battery life is 4%

I am impressed so far with the battery endurance compared to my Fossil smartwatch. That battery I need to charge every night.

Agreed. It’s impressive how light the watch is. And congrats on the top 10! The SC mid-am is a long-term goal of mine as well.

We’ve been getting obscene amounts of rain the past 3-4 days and played in a 2-person 9 hole scramble late yesterday afternoon ... it was cart path only and having the watch as opposed to my phone was great.

I’d simply get the initial distance from the cart path, carry 2 clubs and a towel ... walk over, measure distance and swing away. The next time out, I’ll start plugging in my scores and then upload them to the app ... curious to see the benefits and data shared.

A few days ago I mentioned it was supposed to rain all week. Well it's possible that today I can get out to a different course to take advantage of all the great features this watch offers! May only get 9 holes in the window of no rain but I can't wait!

If any LX5 tester can compare it to the Garmin S62, I’d appreciate it, specifically as to the screen.

The LX5 according to the specs has a much higher resolution (454 x 454 pixels vs. 260 x 260) on a screen that is about the same size (Skygolf says theirs is 2mm larger, but the bezel could cover some of that). So I would expect the LX5 to look a lot better assuming no differences in the brightness or glare.

The screens resolution is stunning with the LX5.

Played 3rd round with the LX5 yesterday, here are some notes:

1. played at a different course yesterday, it took 5-10min for the GPS to get the course.

2. On holes 5-8 the yardages where off by 50-60yds, the course has not been modified in years, so that shouldn't be an issue, a friend at a 8yrs old GPS unit and it was displaying the correct yardages.  After that it appear all of the yardages where withing 1-3yds difference.

3. Used the zoom feature alot this round to update pin position and see the yardage close to the edge of the green.

4. Battery was great once again, i went back to the watch for a bit and it was still around 50%, good enough for another round.

5. Uploaded the scores via Wifi which is really convenient.

6. now the skycaddie.360 option, show you the scores but it appears it can also map your shots, but im thinking that is a function option if you download the APP on your phone. which then defeats the purpose of having just the watch.

I played 3 rounds this weekend while using the watch. Working on formulating my full thoughts, but I have to say so far I've been torn on how I feel about the watch and the software. The amount of detail is almost overwhelming at times and I've found it distracting. I'll look at the contour of the greens and the yardage to clear bunkers and stay safe and it clutters my mind. I am seeing somewhere around ~1 stroke a hole lower on the holes I strictly use the front middle back information.

Unfortunately, yesterday I caught a root in the rough on the 17th hole in my downswing and have sprained my right wrist a bit. It's not bad, but I'll be taking the week off of golf. My next round will be next Sunday at the Harbor Course at Wild Dunes in Isle of Palms.

A quick update from the week:

Played in my league round (9 holes) and enjoyed the data the watch provided. On the course, the data pops up quickly, and allows me to make decisions in a timely manner. I have really begun to use the "IntelliGreen" screen on every approach shot. It allows me to know my bare minimum to cover the front of the green, as well as how much room I have behind the flag. I have started to make better club selections because of the new information.

The watch booted up quickly in finding the course and that concern seems to have diminished the more I use the watch. I have not tried to find a course yet that I have not previously downloaded, so unsure how that will work.

I played in a scramble on Saturday, and my group enjoyed all the data the watch provides beyond FCB numbers. Knowing how long it was to carry bunkers, or how far it was to certain out of bounds. The brightness of the screen was very handy on the grey and cloudy day.

I'm enjoying the information provided on the screen, the easy scoring on the watch, and the way it feels almost non-existent on my wrist.

I am also wearing it as an every day watch and have to still get used to the size. I've noticed that I bump the watch on objects because I'm not spatially aware yet of how far the watch sticks out compared to other watches I have worn.

You think, is overwhelming because you are just trying to get used to the different features, as you get more comfortable with the watch that does other features would become less of a distraction because you would only used them as need it and not focus on them?

I don't think so. I think it more so has to do with the fact that the information is there that i try to hit to a smaller area than necessary. I become more focused on the areas I need to avoid than the areas I need to hit. I think it's more of a how my brain works more than anything else. I'm naturally very analytical which can get in the way of my golf game performing how i want.

It's kind of funny you mention this. The data in Arccos was causing me to be overly analytical, but in all reality it's a variety of FCB numbers related to slope and wind.

With the watch, I find that I appreciate needing to do a little math on my approach shots to know what I need to to do give myself the best opportunity to land it on the green, rather than moving the cursor to various parts of the green in Arccos and trying to remember all of those numbers.

I wonder if different presentations of information allow various people to analyze things the best way for their thinking style.

See I actually had the same interaction with Arccos. I learned it was too much data on the course, so I tend to leave it in my pocket unless I couldn't see what the green looked like or the danger up ahead. Now I use Arccos more strictly has a data analysis tool. I like the ability to see where i struggled in a round vs where i succeeded then I could practice on those areas I was struggling on.

That’s a great course and think you’ll enjoy it. Don’t let the short total distance deceive you, it’s a tough track.

We’re up in Maine and I’ll be playing at Belgrade Lakes Golf Club tomorrow ... looking fwd to it.

To comment on the overload of information, I can sympathize for I’m very analytical as well. ‘Analysis Paralysis’

Hasn’t been an issue for me in my 3 rounds with the watch, and have mainly focused more on the contours of the green on my approach shots. But I can see how the information may be a detrimental to my mental approach over time. We’ll see ...
