Josh Ross
It happened! After almost six rounds (rain shortened a couple of them) on a course with no features, I was finally able to play on a SkyCaddie mapped course and take full advantage of what this watch offers. It's such a night and day difference in user experience. On a member mapped course, the watch seems to have a hard time keeping up with where you are and the yardages are not always accurate. Obviously that isn't SkyCaddie's fault since they aren't the ones that mapped the course but I don't think I'd even have the course as an option considering how bad it was at times. The little buzz to ask if you are still on a hole or have moved to the next one is very annoying on my home course. I can be on shot 3 on a par 5 and it's already asking if I'm finished. There were also a few holes where I was a good 40 yards off the green and the watch would change to say I was on the green and wouldn't give me a yardage. All around a pretty bad experience on a "Member Mapped Course" and I hope they will officially map my home course in the future. Now, onto the experience that I've been waiting for! I traveled five hours to my old college town to play our University Course with some buddies. I've played it many times but it had been about six or seven years since I last teed it up there. I may be in the minority here, but this watch has simplified things for me. The days of me trying to use a laser to figure out carry distances to bunkers, ditches, creeks, etc is over. It was so nice on the first hole to glance down, see it was 221 to carry the bunker and 255 to the end of the fairway, and know that my CLK was the perfect club of choice off the tee. I didn't mess around with moving the pin or anything, but I found the yardages to greens to be very precise as I hit every green but two on the day (a wedge spun off the green into a bunker and I missed to the right a bit on the other one). I'm looking forward to getting out to more courses to give this thing another go! To summarize and to add a couple notes: - Member Mapped Courses (at least in my experience on one course) are not very accurate at times and render the watch almost useless. - Accuracy on SkyCaddie courses is very precise. - Using this as an everyday watch is wonderful. Would be cool to have more functions of a smart watch like seeing texts and calls but absolutely not necessary. - I'm becoming more spatially aware and have stopped hitting the watch on things for the most part. Like someone stated before, it would be nice if a screen protector was offered. - I find it very easy to navigate to the different screens and the graphics are very nice. - I can't imagine how nice this would be on a bigger handheld unit, but at the same time I love how easy it is to just glance down at my wrist instead of having to use a different device. - As others have noted, the battery life is very impressive. I'll be back with more as I continue using it! Anyone else reading this, please ask any question you may come up with. Would love to see some more questions from the community! knightsofnii
Not much more to add than what has been said. I will say on Saturday I played a solo 18, and the battery went down to below 50%. But I still don't need to charge it since then. It's at 14% now and will easily go the rest of the day. When I find my Garmin charger (proprietary chargers suck!) and get another chance, I'll do a 3 hole shootout between the SC, Garmin, Arccos, and my Bushnell palvord and JAGolfore 2 Quote RADspeed 10.5, Evenflow Riptide CB 6.0s Bio Cell 3/4w, PXV 6.0s; AMP 3h 19deg Aldila RIP R. mikeanthony
Played yesterday at Belgrade Lakes Golf Club ... if any of y’all happen to be in this part of Maine, an absolute must to play. Stunningly beautiful course. Used the LX5 while playing and it was extremely helpful for those elevated blind shots into the green and those landing areas on par 5s that were over a hill ... and really focused on using their swipe screen that gives you distances to the front of and carry for, on multiple hazards. Very convenient and speeds up the pre-shot process. Had previously been using the crosshairs on the course map and dragging it to the hazards on the map. Lastly, don’t always have TheGrint app out to measure distances between the two, but I did on one specific par 3 ... and their distances were severely off. The LX5 had it at 180 ... Whereas TheGrint had it at 157 ... And while TheGrint may need a minute on capturing the correct, I did wait several seconds and it stayed at that 157 number. You can see the default yardage listed at 175 and based on the club I used, the LX5 was correct. A win for the LX5. knightsofnii
The "dashboard" on my pushcart was definitely high performance I actually didn't use the Bushnell, I felt like getting on course shots and comparos was slowing me way down. Using the green feature on the SC is nice: just drag the flag to near where it looks like it is. MrBandit
Played 4th round with the Watch. Here are some items I notice this time around. 1. Played the same course as last week, it took about 5 min to find the course and be ready. 2. Screen resolution was dim at times, not sure why all of a sudden it was doing that, even after I had to set to high not auto 3. The watch froze on the 10 hole, I had to completely shut it down and resume the round. It also went into a recovery mode when I turn it on again to the wiresless sync of the scores. 4. The same stretch of holes like last week, the yardage was off by 40-60 yds so I had to rely on a rangefinder for those holes. 5. Used alot of the long view of the hole display and move around to landing areas. This was helpful try to gage how far a bunker or a turn was before running out of fairway. palvord and JAGolfore 2 Quote Driver: TaylorMade Qi10 MAX - 8.5 with Fujikura Speeder NX TCS 50 (secondary shaft HRDZ Black 6.0 Stiff) 3 -Wood: Sub70 949x 3 Wood 15 with Hrdz RDX Black Stiff 5-Wood: Sub70 949x 5 Wood with Hrdz RDX Black stiff 4-Hybrid: Sub70 949x 4 Hybrid with Project X 5.5 Hybrid Stiff Irons: Mizuno Pro 225 - 6-PW , w/Nippon Modus 105 Stiff Wedges: Sub70 TAIII w/Nippon Modus 105 Stiff - 50 ,56, 60 Putter: L.A.B Mezz1, 34 in Balls: MaxFli Tour X, TaylorMade Tour Response, TaylorMade TPx GPS: Shot Scope X5 with Tracking TESTED: SUB70 949X 5 Wood TESTED: NIPPO N.S. TCUfrog
Accidentally left my charger at home in Atlanta, so my LX5 was dead for my round at Wild Dunes' Harbor Course. A few takeaways from my first round without the LX5: 1. I'm still dealing with a nagging wrist injury and dealt with 25-30mph winds all day on a course that has water or a hazard in play on 15 of 18 holes. I shot a +14, 84 with 5 lost balls and only 3, 1-putts. Overall, I was happy with how I played. 2. Without the LX5, I felt a little more free in my game. I was more focused on the shot and less focused on what was in front of me. 3. There were a couple of greens I wish I had the green reading feature on shots. Ended up on the wrong side of a couple of holes that caused me to lose a stroke or 2. 4. On hole 15, the battery in my bushnell v4 died and I had to use strictly my Arccos app which i've learned is very innacurate in the numbers as I was walking off distance from the sprinklers and Arccos was telling me the number was 5-10 yards different than the sprinkler heads. I'll be on a forced 2 1/2 week golf hiatus as I'm going on a trip for 10 days to spend time with my in-laws and I won't be taking my clubs. Hoping I can come back and get back to better golf and have a healthy wrist again. palvord, Josh Ross and JAGolfore 3 Quote RadSpeed 10.5, Motore X F1 60 X-Stiff RadSpeed 14, Motore X F1 60 Stiff M6, 4H 22.0 JPX 921 Hot Metal Pro, 4-PW, Nippon Modus 105 MG3 52, 56, 60, SB - Black White Hot OG #7 Vice Golf Pro Plus Smart Sensors
MrBandit
Played 5th round today with the LX5. 1. Played a course I haven't played in 10 years, so I really wanted to take advantage of the view of the holes since I didn't know where I was going and there was alot of blind shots 2. GPS found the course in 5min. Have me the options to select either East or West courses 3. The ability to view how the course is layout and also the view of how long to the beginning and end of the bunkers, and it some holes where the end of the fairway was huge. Specially in blind shots. 4. Keeping score on the watch is getting easier and easier each round. 5. 2 rounds with a single charge has been consistent. palvord, Josh Ross, JAGolfore and 1 other 4 Quote Driver: TaylorMade Qi10 MAX - 8.5 with Fujikura Speeder NX TCS 50 (secondary shaft HRDZ Black 6.0 Stiff) 3 -Wood: Sub70 949x 3 Wood 15 with Hrdz RDX Black Stiff 5-Wood: Sub70 949x 5 Wood with Hrdz RDX Black stiff 4-Hybrid: Sub70 949x 4 Hybrid with Project X 5.5 Hybrid Stiff Irons: Mizuno Pro 225 - 6-PW , w/Nippon Modus 105 Stiff Wedges: Sub70 TAIII w/Nippon Modus 105 Stiff - 50 ,56, 60 Putter: L.A.B Mezz1, 34 in Balls: MaxFli Tour X, TaylorMade Tour Response, TaylorMade TPx GPS: Shot Scope X5 with Tracking TESTED: SUB70 949X 5 Wood TESTED: NIPPO N.S. ballplayer002003
I played a few days ago at a course called Prospect Bay in Md. and the watch helped out a great bit. I like that I can see the hole layout and that I can move the target around. The more I use this the more I like it. However I have to say, I don't like when it asks you if you are finished a hole. Without thinking many times I will be walking off the green and it pops up and I instinctively hit finished and it jumps to the next hole. Now I have to go BACK and hit a few screens in order to enter my score. I wish I knew how to turn this feature off or to bypass it. Sometimes the question will pop up when I'm near the green waiting to hit a chip shot, sometimes it'll pop up as I am moving to the next hole, and sometimes it'll pop up when I'm playing my approach shot. ballplayer002003
I played today, a very long round. The course was packed and there were no groups allowing anyone to play through. This was every bit of a 4-4.5 hour round. With that being said, the watch was at 100% when I started and as I was walking off of 18 green I was at 1%. Hole 17 I got the notice of low battery and to charge it. I have read from everyone else that they think the battery life is great; maybe I got a bad watch because I think the battery life is very short. I have to charge it every day, even when I am not playing. Are any of the other testers experiencing this problem? I did not have the heart rate monitor going or anything else. Just normal gps. MDGolfHacker
Incognito for a while as I've had a forced role change at the office that netted me MORE work for the same pay. Anyway, I was able to take the LX-5 out for it's inaugural use three weeks and two ago. I purposely didn't read the directions as I think most users just power devices up like this and take it on the course. I'm already a skycaddie.com user so this isn't taken into account the syncing of the LX-5 to the skycaddie account. I also work in the IT industry so I tend to be technically inclined on electronic devices like the LX-5. In the course parking lot, I wen through the options to find the course and the 18 we were planning to play (there are four 9's on this course). The LX-5 found the 18 very quickly, and showed me the first hole. It was a pretty humid day and I found that the touch screen at first didn't work with the glove on, but as the glove got a bit more wet from use, having the glove on and using the touch screen started to worked (albeit with a bit more force on the screen). As a previous user of Arccos and a current user of The Precision Pro NX-7 Pro, I found that the yardages were within a yard or two of the Arccos (You can never get an exact yardage compared to laser based NX-7 Pro, only an approximation). There was one time on a Par 3 that the distances didn't match a few GPS devices AND SkyCaddie's Own SX500 being used on the same hole. I couldn't figure it out as I was standing right next to the SX500. That was the only hickup I experienced with the watch. It was awesome to get front, middle back distances. The only caveat is that those distances are as the crow flies, so it doesn't take into account any elevation changes. As for keeping score, as others have mentioned, there were times the LX-5 asked me if I had completed the hole on the way to the green, or I somehow had put in scores for the proceeding hole. I'm pretty certain that was user error Score keeping is straight forward, but don't expect stats like Arccos on the watch. Fairways hit, missed (left, right or OB), GIR and putts are all the stats you can generate from the LX-5. Anyway, I'm hoping to get out this week to test it some more. One last thing, I have been wearing the watch out off the course and it doesn't look bad as an every day watch. If you have any questions, let me know! I have photos (no unboxing as I'm sure others have already or will post those) that I'll share once the official review is started! I have to charge it every day, even when I am not playing. Are any of the other testers experiencing this problem? I did not have the heart rate monitor going or anything else. Just normal gps. Not happy about that. I have not experienced the same concerns as you with the battery. For example, this week, I began with a full charge on Wednesday morning, wore the watch as my every day watch through Saturday, and played two nine hole rounds. I still have about 5% of battery life now. I'm really impressed on my end, but can understand your concern if it is not lasting for a 4.5hr round. Were you using the greens feature and looking at the watch a lot? I'd imagine the screen lighting up and turning on would have a battery drain. knightsofnii
I played club championships this past weekend. Some of the worst golf of my life, and some of the best. But not enough of the best and a lot of the worst. haha. One guy was frustrated with pace of play, a few times when the other partner or myself pulled out a scope or looked at our watch, he grumbled. Sorry sir, I don't use my 7i for every shot. Anyway, I found under those circumstances, I could just pull my bushnell and get pins or bunkers, and I didn't have to think about what I was looking at. Perhaps over time as I'm more accustomed to the watch, I'll be more expedient with it. My Samsung watch turns on when I rotate or lift my arm. That would be a neat feature. Having to tap the screen, which doesn't always work, to turn on the display, is kind of annoying. I can see how arm movement vs golf swing would just make the watch run unnecessarily, especially during a swing or something. I also noticed at times, yardages off by over 10 yds vs my scope. And I'd check again, and it was more correct. It appears at times to need more time to hone in on my position. I was not really using green feature, I just need the front middle and back numbers. There were a few holes where I wanted to see the hole layout or how far a bunker was from the tee, but that should all be light weight for this watch, in my opinion. AGutierrez7
I was able to get the watch out for 8 holes this past weekend (heavy rain canceled the back nine) and I did notice the battery was at about 78%. So I have not noticed any crazy battery drain that @ballplayer002003 experienced. I really enjoy the hole view feature of the watch, extremely helpful to see hazard carry distances and approach yardages depending on landing zone. I actually don't mind the simplistic stats that the LX5 gathers. I really only need FIR, GIR, putts as far as stats go at my current level of play. My only issue with the watch is the face thickness but I think that's starting to grow on me. Hopefully better weather is in my future so I can get out there and give it a couple more rounds of experience. ballplayer002003, palvord and JAGolfore 3 Quote Most Recent Testing: 949x PRO Hybrid In my 2019 X-Cart Bag : M3 10.5* (TENSEI Blue 6R) GS53 3W 14* (Review) CLK 2017 4H 22* M6 Irons 4-PW (KBS MAX 85g Stiff Steel Shafts, Std Length & Lie) AW, SW: Forged Satin 48*, 54* LW: SM6 60* Infinite Putter Michigan Ave 34" e6 Current Tech: NX7 Rangefinder LX5 GPS Smartwatch (Review)
MDGolfHacker
I haven't experienced any significant power drain during use. I could probably get two rounds in with the watch. On a display note, the watch is easily viewable in sunlight so no issues work there. MDGolfHacker AGutierrez7, palvord, JAGolfore and 1 other 4 Quote TSssWhat's In This Lefty's Bag? Interesting your having battery issues, that is one of the things I have been happy with has been the battery life, It last exactly 2 rounds, If you like as an everyday watch , I wore it for a week to test and it was at 34% on Friday evening. it could be a defective battery on the watch. mikeanthony
Like everyone else, no issues with the battery on the watch I rcvd. And as @knightsofnii mentioned, I’m curious if there is any Bluetooth connection in the background that may be draining the battery. Now that I’m back at the office, the watch unfortunately has been nonexistent on my wrist. Prior to starting back up to work, I’ve begun to enjoy the watch from an everyday at home standpoint, but it’s just too big to wear with my work clothes. So now its been sitting in our bathroom drawer for the past 10+ days now. Did play my local home course yesterday and completely forgot to grab it as well ... and yet I didn’t really miss it at the same time. And to one of the commenter’s point from an earlier post, I too enjoyed playing without the watch for a round. I’ve gotten about 8 rounds in with the watch and have no complaints. Also, I really wish everything that the LX5 offers was packed into and available via an app on an Apple Watch. I remember back in ‘05 or so that I was carrying around a cellphone, a digital camera, and a Palm Pilot ... now we have iPhones that act as a phone, an amazing camera, wallet, and a whole bunch of other things all at once. And I can’t help but feel the golf GPS watch technology is somewhat in the same boat and will fall by the wayside. I could be wrong. JAGolfore
Sorry I have been MIA. I have played 36 holes with my watch and it died sometime after the 36th hole. I do notice that it takes a little longer for it to get yardages especially if I am riding vs. walking. I will laser the flag and then look to see front and back and sometime it takes a few seconds for the watch to catch up. I also think the screen resolution setting has a lot to do with the battery life. Try adjusting that down and see if it helps at all. I will be playing (hopefully) 90 holes from Thursday to Sunday this week so we will see how the watch holds up. I really like how easy it is to get to the courses and syncing the watch has not been an issue either. palvord, knightsofnii, mikeanthony and 3 others 6 Quote Driver: Callaway Rogue 9* FW: Sub 70 Pro 4 wood Hybrid: Sub 70 949 Hybrid 19* Irons: Sub 70 659 CB 4 - 6 Black 639 MB 7 - PW Wedges: Sub 70 JB - 50* 54* & 60* Putter: Odyssey White Hot #2 Ball: Titleist Pro-V1x Handicap index: +3.9 Instagram: joshandersongolf Twitter: @jacustomgolf
