2020 Official Member Review: SkyCaddie LX5 Watch

I played a few days ago at a course called Prospect Bay in Md.  and the watch helped out a great bit.  I like that I can see the hole layout and that I can move the target around.  The more I use this the more I like it.  However I have to say, I don't like when it asks you if you are finished a hole.  Without thinking many times I will be walking off the green and it pops up and I instinctively hit finished and it jumps to the next hole.  Now I have to go BACK and hit a few screens in order to enter my score.  I wish I knew how to turn this feature off or to bypass it.

Here are some photos from yesterday at pasatiempo and this afternoon at Spanish Bay. I’ll be posting all my updates in the ‘How’d you play’ spychat thread. Look out for tomorrow where I’ll post update

I agree, it would be nice to have a way to turn that feature off. Sometimes the question will pop up when I'm near the green waiting to hit a chip shot, sometimes it'll pop up as I am moving to the next hole, and sometimes it'll pop up when I'm playing my approach shot.

I can't figure out what triggers it to ask that question as it doesn't seem to have a consistent timing between starting a new hole and the question popping up on the watch screen.

Exactly, I would suggest that they just eliminate that feature all together.  It is not needed in my opinion.

The only reason I can see the question being needed is that the watch doesn't often advance automatically to the next hole.

maybe, but I would rather them work on that aspect.  It's just a hassle the few times I actually hit finished and then having to go back in.  Nothing that would deter me from buying the watch though.

I don't have anything new to add as of now. Still really enjoying this as an everyday watch. Heart rate monitor has been absolutely fantastic and came in handy big time when I had a minor issue the other day. The battery life is great when playing golf but it's super impressive when wearing day to day.

I played today, a very long round.  The course was packed and there were no groups allowing anyone to play through.  This was every bit of a 4-4.5 hour round.  With that being said, the watch was at 100% when I started and as I was walking off of 18 green I was at 1%.  Hole 17 I got the notice of low battery and to charge it.  I have read from everyone else that they think the battery life is great; maybe I got a bad watch because I think the battery life is very short.  I have to charge it every day, even when I am not playing.  Are any of the other testers experiencing this problem?  I did not have the heart rate monitor going or anything else.  Just normal gps.  Not happy about that.

Incognito for a while as I've had a forced role change at the office that netted me MORE work for the same pay🤦‍♂️😞.   Anyway, I was able to take the LX-5 out for it's inaugural use three weeks and two ago.  I purposely didn't read the directions as I think most users just power devices up like this and take it on the course.  I'm already a skycaddie.com user so this isn't taken into account the syncing of the LX-5 to the skycaddie account.  I also work in the IT industry so I tend to be technically inclined on electronic devices like the LX-5. In the course parking lot, I wen through the options to find the course and the 18 we were planning to play (there are four 9's on this course).  The LX-5 found the 18 very quickly, and showed me the first hole.  It was a pretty humid day and I found that the touch screen at first didn't work with the glove on, but as the glove got a bit more wet from use, having the glove on and using the touch screen started to worked (albeit with a bit more force on the screen).  As a previous user of Arccos and a current user of The Precision Pro NX-7 Pro,  I found that the yardages were within a yard or two of the Arccos (You can never get an exact yardage compared to laser based NX-7 Pro, only an approximation).  There was one time on a Par 3 that the distances didn't match a few GPS devices AND SkyCaddie's Own SX500 being used on the same hole.  I couldn't figure it out as I was standing right next to the SX500.  That was the only hickup I experienced with the watch.  It was awesome to get front, middle back distances.  The only caveat is that those distances are as the crow flies, so it doesn't take into account any elevation changes.  As for keeping score, as others have mentioned, there were times the LX-5 asked me if I had completed the hole on the way to the green, or I somehow had put in scores for the proceeding hole.  I'm pretty certain that was user error 😄  Score keeping is straight forward, but don't expect stats like Arccos on the watch.  Fairways hit, missed (left, right or OB), GIR and putts are all the stats you can generate from the LX-5. Anyway, I'm hoping to get out this week to test it some more.  One last thing, I have been wearing the watch out off the course and it doesn't look bad as an every day watch.  If you have any questions, let me know!  I have photos (no unboxing as I'm sure others have already or will post those) that I'll share once the official review is started!

I have not experienced the same concerns as you with the battery. For example, this week, I began with a full charge on Wednesday morning, wore the watch as my every day watch through Saturday, and played two nine hole rounds. I still have about 5% of battery life now.

I'm really impressed on my end, but can understand your concern if it is not lasting for a 4.5hr round.

I have noticed that while playing a round, the battery drains significantly faster than while not.  But a 4+ hour round for me got me down to 45-55%.

Were you using the greens feature and looking at the watch a lot?  I'd imagine the screen lighting up and turning on would have a battery drain.

Also, are you synced with wifi or bluetooth or something perhaps in the background?

sorry about the battery woes.

I played club championships this past weekend.  Some of the worst golf of my life, and some of the best.  But not enough of the best and a lot of the worst.  haha.

One guy was frustrated with pace of play, a few times when the other partner or myself pulled out a scope or looked at our watch, he grumbled.

Sorry sir, I don't use my 7i for every shot.  Anyway, I found under those circumstances, I could just pull my bushnell and get pins or bunkers, and I didn't have to think

about what I was looking at.  Perhaps over time as I'm more accustomed to the watch, I'll be more expedient with it.

My Samsung watch turns on when I rotate or lift my arm.  That would be a neat feature.  Having to tap the screen, which doesn't always work, to turn on the display, is kind of annoying.

I can see how arm movement vs golf swing would just make the watch run unnecessarily, especially during a swing or something.

I also noticed at times, yardages off by over 10 yds vs my scope.  And I'd check again, and it was more correct.  It appears at times to need more time to hone in on my position.

I used it for all approach shots for distance to pin.  I was not really using green feature, I just need the front middle and back numbers.  There were a few holes where I wanted to see the hole layout or how far a bunker was from the tee, but that should all be light weight for this watch, in my opinion.

I was able to get the watch out for 8 holes this past weekend (heavy rain canceled the back nine) and I did notice the battery was at about 78%. So I have not noticed any crazy battery drain that @ballplayer002003 experienced. I really enjoy the hole view feature of the watch, extremely helpful to see hazard carry distances and approach yardages depending on landing zone. I actually don't mind the simplistic stats that the LX5 gathers. I really only need FIR, GIR, putts as far as stats go at my current level of play. My only issue with the watch is the face thickness but I think that's starting to grow on me. Hopefully better weather is in my future so I can get out there and give it a couple more rounds of experience.

I haven't experienced any significant power drain during use.  I could probably get two rounds in with the watch.  On a display note, the watch is easily viewable in sunlight so no issues work there.

Interesting your having battery issues, that is one of the things I have been happy with has been the battery life, It last exactly 2 rounds,  If you like as an everyday watch , I wore it for a week to test and it was at 34% on Friday evening.
it could be a defective battery on the watch.

Like everyone else, no issues with the battery on the watch I rcvd. And as @knightsofnii mentioned, I’m curious if there is any Bluetooth connection in the background that may be draining the battery.

Now that I’m back at the office, the watch unfortunately has been nonexistent on my wrist. ☹️ Prior to starting back up to work, I’ve begun to enjoy the watch from an everyday at home standpoint, but it’s just too big to wear with my work clothes. So now its been sitting in our bathroom drawer for the past 10+ days now.

Did play my local home course yesterday and completely forgot to grab it as well ... and yet I didn’t really miss it at the same time. And to one of the commenter’s point from an earlier post, I too enjoyed playing without the watch for a round. I’ve gotten about 8 rounds in with the watch and have no complaints.

Also, I really wish everything that the LX5 offers was packed into and available via an app on an Apple Watch. I remember back in ‘05 or so that I was carrying around a cellphone, a digital camera, and a Palm Pilot ... now we have iPhones that act as a phone, an amazing camera, wallet, and a whole bunch of other things all at once. And I can’t help but feel the golf GPS watch technology is somewhat in the same boat and will fall by the wayside. I could be wrong.

Sorry I have been MIA.  I have played 36 holes with my watch and it died sometime after the 36th hole.  I do notice that it takes a little longer for it to get yardages especially if I am riding vs. walking.  I will laser the flag and then look to see front and back and sometime it takes a few seconds for the watch to catch up.  I also think the screen resolution setting has a lot to do with the battery life.  Try adjusting that down and see if it helps at all.   I will be playing (hopefully) 90 holes from Thursday to Sunday this week so we will see how the watch holds up.  I really like how easy it is to get to the courses and syncing the watch has not been an issue either.
