Best Way to Test Different Shafts?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I’ve been leaning more lately into my gear-junkie tendencies, and I’m trying to try as many iron shafts as I can. Beyond paying for a fitting and testing 3-5 shafts, what would you recommend is the best way for me to get to hit the widest variety of iron shafts I can? Thanks!

Go to one of the large fitting companies like club champion. They will have the largest selection of shafts to hit. I am potentially going to do this to compare graphite iron shafts and this is what I would do.

From what I've read, Mizuno's Shaft Optimizer 3D is a very good tool and a reliable place to start. With the seemingly endless number of shafts available to us, finding the best one is pretty daunting.  While most fitters are capable of getting players matched to a "first order" list of shafts, I think it takes something like this tool (and a competent fitter) to get to the "second order" (derivative) list.  But don't take it from me.... read the truth here 🙂.

Interestingly, my fitter offered Mizuno clubs and they were among my finalists.  But he was a new shop and did not have the shaft optimizer device.  I'm really curious to see what it says about the shafts we selected for my G410's.  Last I spoke with him he was in the queue to get one from Mizuno... need to check up with him.  Good luck.

  • 2 weeks later...

Buy several 7 or 8 iron shafts, and either swap them in a commonly-hit iron head between rounds, or buy a few test heads (like a Maltby or something) that are identical, build a few 8 irons, and hit the range.  Now you know which one you like.  Sure it's an expensive-ish method, but when you're done, you already have one shaft for your set, and you've gotten to hit in the real world as opposed to off a mat indoors
