3 wood for driving

Recommended Posts

Have a 10.5 degree driver and a 17.5 degree 4/5 wood that I use from the fairway.

Looking for a bigger-headed 3 wood for driving on short par 4s and on tight holes. Any recommendations? Have mostly Ping in my bag now but have always loved Cobra. Looking for forgiveness and confidence standing over the ball. Thanks.

I'd look at the Ping G400 or Cobra LTD.

I would first try to, grip down on the Driver about 1.5 to 2.5 inches and shorten the swing slightly.

The result may well be a longer straighter shot than a 3 Wood would give.

Drivers have far bigger sweet spots and have far better technology than 3 woods.

One of the toughest shots is a backed off driver. Great thinking getting a 3W to fill the gap. Callaway used to make exactly what your looking for in the X line. Maybe find something with them.

The backed off Driver one of the toughest shots?

Nicklaus, Woods, Snead, Hogan, Norman, Nelson ( Byron ) and about every Dude on TV hit the backed off Driver as their "go to Fairway Finder Shot".

And ask most good players,  "What is the hardest club to get comfortable/fit for"?

They will say a 3 Wood.

Tour Edge Exotics EXS 220 13.5 degrees is suppose to be a good option off the tee vs a driver. I know you like Ping/Cobra but this one might be worth testing...

I’d second the Tour exotics suggestion

The EXS 220 is what I recently got fit into. I was hitting it 245-255 with about 12 total yards of dispersion. I don’t hit my 8 iron that straight most of the time... 🤣

I think I saw a whole rack of X Line callaway stuff at my local Academy Sports, not sure if OP has one around but it's worth a gander. They also had a lot of TM M2 drivers, 3W, 5W, and hybrids.

I think the above suggestions are good. I would suggest trying to get a driver cut down to like 43" with maybe a little higher loft or get a strong 3-wood cut down to 41" or 42". Driver heads are the most forgiving heads in golf. Control is going to be largely dictated by length if you're swing isn't great (like most of us). If you want to toy around with some ideas and not spend too much you can get new Maltby woods built to you're specs for $50 to $90. They're high quality and won't break the bank when trying new things.

+1 on both Cobra and Tour Edge.  My F8 kicked an older 13.5* Tour Edge Exotics out of the bag.  Both are great clubs.

What's in the bag:

I would stay away from large headed 3 woods.

The larger head adds backspin to lower strikes that robs distance. This makes that type of club strictly a tee club = what you are describing anyways.

Now, if you still want to pursue it then I will recommend this club as I have used it and it did exactly what you described.

Taylormade RBZ Stage 2 TS 13 degree 3 wood. It looks like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/TaylorMade-RBZ-Stage-2-Tour-TS-13-Degree-3-Wood-RH-Very-Good-Condition/274476382644?hash=item3fe81139b4:g:p2cAAOSwf8RfSSDf

I hit this about 10-20 yards shorter than my driver. It also has the adjustable sleeve.

Golf is simple - people are complicated.

5w Taylormade SLDR S 19* - 220yd, Ping G2 5-U - 190-105, Maltby M+ 54* & MG 60* - 95-75, Evnroll ER8, Titleist 816 H1 4h 21*, Maltby 4 Hybrid Iron 24* - 210-200, Callaway XR16 8* - 235 carry
