I was an Android user for a long time, over 10 years. I switched to "vanilla" Android phones when the Nexus 6p was released and used google-made phones up until the Pixel 3. I love Android for its customization options, and Google's camera software which I believe to be superior to Apple's.

Today, I'm using an iPhone because of work, I couldn't find an android-friendly app that supported PGP email encryption that worked as well as Canary for iOS.

The new iOS that's releasing actually has a few adoptions from Android, and the same can be said for the next flavor of Android borrowing some things from iOS. The differences between the two are slowly shrinking, which is good for us as consumers since we lose out on less going from one platform to the other. That said, the prices for iPhones are wild and cost almost as much as their laptops somehow.

The debate comes down to software, not hardware IMO. Samsung and Apple make great smartphones - hardware. On software, iPhones work marginally better than any other devices and their apps are more bulletproof, Android phones offer more features (sooner than Apple). But the real debate IMO...

...we’re not Apple devotees, but we use iPhones only. No problem with Samsung (their phones are top notch) or other Android smartphone producers, but we don't trust Google and avoid them as much as possible - it's essentially impossible to avoid them entirely. No platform is perfect WRT privacy, but Apple doesn't do anywhere near the data-mining that Google/Alphabet does with Android. Apple uses and keeps only the information it needs to provide good service, Google hoovers up anything and everything they can get from users and will monetize your info in every way possible (and it's not all aggregated data as they claim). YMMV

That said, your son may have a very strong preference based on his circle of friends. Good luck.

We're iPhone all the way.

When smart phones really started coming on strong, my wife and I both got Samsungs running Android. As soon as our contracts were up, we moved to iPhones and haven't looked back. We had way too many issues with app compatibility and performance on Android. Hasn't been an issue at all on the iPhones.

Being a Cyber Security Expert I used to only use Apple but now that I have retired I switched to Samsung. Why?

1. The cameras are the best you can get in a phone. When I travel unless I need a powerful telephoto 300-600mm all I take is my phone. They have been able to take pictures in the dark for 4-5 years without flash. My mate has the iPhone 11 and it does not even come close to the quality of my S9.

2. Battery life. I run two apps both using GPS when I play and if I start with 100% by the time I finish it will be 84-85%.

3. I used to love the way Apple apps were designed to be easy to use, now you have to have a degree to work them out. And I am a computer engineer.

The only thing that I did not like was the interface, however I found a thing called Simple Mode with basically makes the screen similar to a iPhone layout.

Here is a picture, anyone like to guess what it is. Note resolution has been greatly reduced - file size was 1.2MB now only 95KB.

Based on 1 and 3 I think you would like the vanilla Android experience aka not TouchWiz (Samsung's flavor of the launcher/OS). Google's launcher didn't allow me to do what I wanted it to do, so I switched to NovaLauncher Prime. I like as minimalistic as possible, and that's what I was able to achieve. On my iPhone, I can't really do that as much.

Android here.  I have no strong preference for either though.  Some would say that nowdays Android and iPhone are so similar that its really more what your brand preference is.  IMO, most who say that iPhone is better are really just going off of their brand bias and the outdated notion that everything Apple is the best.

Always been android.  The greatest thing about iPhone is the usability.  Little children to senior citizens are able to navigate iPhones.  Samsungs 8 and newer battery life is life changing.  Also, androids come with fast charge capability where to my understanding, you have to buy an adapter to have fast charging capabilities on an iphone.  Charging from 30%-100% in ~1.5 hr is great.  I guess another thing I don't like with iPhone is that Apple almost forces you to stay in their bubble.  At the end of the day, much like golf, to each their own.

Apple iPhone 100%. I used to use Android but would ultimately have "software issues" that would destroy an android. 3 years into an iPhone and I'm never going back.

Android.  Moto G7.  You can get nicely spec'ed midrange Android phones for much less than iPhones.  Back in the day, I used to root my phones - not so much reason to do that now.  I prefer the homescreen customizations in Android as well.

Interestingly enough, I use a Mac for work and really like it, so I'm not anti-Apple.

I do use an old iPhone 5s for Arccos.

I've been an Android homer since (near) the beginning. Samsung Galaxy S Captivate, Galaxy S3, Galaxy S5, Huawei Honor 6X, and Galaxy S9+. I prefer the flexibility of Android over iOS and my original deviation from Samsung was about the time knox was released. The first thing I did when I got a new phone was root it, wipe it, and install custom ROM's that allowed even more flexibility and control, but, as I understand it, knox locks down the ability to truly root without bricking your phone (at least the last time I read up on it).

I had iOS devices for work and hated them, but I suspect it had more to do with the apps we had to use than the devices. One of my main problems with iPhones was the lack of an app drawer. I hate a cluttered desktop, whether it is a computer, phone, or tablet.

App drawer is finally coming, lol! One of my biggest issues as well!

I like your Frank wallpaper

Thanks, got it from Reddit. I can upload it for you later. I like white background because it makes it easier to use the screen as a flashlight when I'm walking around the house in the dark, LOL

I am googling it from my phone, it might be a great tool to piss off one of my co workers who hates Tiger with a passion, maybe I need one as a background for my computer when we are back in the office.

I had different pictures of him rotated both as a screen saver and desktop wallpaper for a couple of weeks after he won the masters last year, my coworker did not talk to me the entire time
