Interesting discussion.  Found the comment by Tony that hybrid clubs (cast + forged), and labeled "forged", would not be allowed in Japan due to their more stringent truth in advertising laws.  Cobra's MIM process is going to really move the needle... I predict.  It will essentially take the advantages of the hybrid construction and move it back into the super cast (virtually forged) category.

Chris' comment that it's not a performance based but rather a feel conversation/argument will certainly raise some hackles.

And how about those 4th place PING 1500's... I want to try those next to the i500's 😁

I listened to this very intently.  I have ALWAYS had cast clubs.  If the wife allows it, I plan on getting fit for the new Mizuno JPX clubs coming out that are forged.  I know it's a bad idea to be dead set on a set of clubs rather than playing the field, but I can't help myself.  Those irons are so sexy...

Or I'll go to the Taylormade P770's which I believe are also forged.

As always an interesting NPG episode, though I was dying to hear answers to the following:

  • If feel is just subjective, and geometry is the sole determinant as they alleged - why aren't there cast musclebacks? The guys admitted cast is less expensive. If it's just geometry, why does anyone bother to make (significantly more expensive to produce) forged musclebacks anymore?
  • PING is clearly a tech savvy and very capable club maker, and they're as good as anyone at casting if not better. Given that why did they go to the extra expense of making their Blueprint "shotmakers irons" forged?

They seemed to sort of dance around the differences between physical properties of cast vs forged finished parts, and came down on the 'it's all geometry' side. If you look outside golf tech into metallurgy, no one I can find says given the same alloy, there's no difference between a forged and a cast part of the exact same geometry. The properties are NOT the same in the metallurgy world - and that difference would impact feel. Just as solid wood, plywood and particle board aren't the same if made from the same wood, neither are cast and forged metal parts.
