Say 5 or 10 years and give yourself one golf tip what would it be? 

For me it would be driver ball position and tee height. That has made a big improvement off the tee

I think I would tell myself to be more consistent in practice. For years my practice routine was just to go out and whack away on the range without giving thought to ball position, tee height, alignment, etc.. I think as I've gotten more serious about how well I play, that's really hindered my progress to this point.

Same here, if I would have taken my practice in high school more seriously and kept with it I have no doubt I would have made much more progress.

Simple practice doesn't make perfect, you have to make the effort with a real desire to improve.

If I could go back I would have been fit for a driver. I did it for the first time when the G400's came out. That really dropped my handicap. Now being just fit for the Sub Seventy 699 Pro irons and the difference it made in my iron game, it has dropped my handicap even further. Truthfully it is hard to move or even obtain where I am now. I was around a 7 before the changes and as of this week a 2.1. 

I live in the mountains of East Tennessee. The closest place to get a fitting would be DSG or Edwin Watts and they are over an hour and a half away. I dont trust the big box fitters or demo day fittings.  I got fit for drivers while on a vacation and fit another time while on a business trip. Then the iron fitting was over the phone with Jason from Sub Seventy. He is a master club maker and asked questions that I would not have thought revelant and my answers led him to providing me with a perfect club fitting. 

I was always told I was an off the rack fit. They were wrong!

I would tell myself to forget about expensive, name brand golf equipment and just play cheap gear that works.  I recently pulled out the first set of clubs that I ever owned: Knight Virage Oversize irons (I don't have the woods anymore) and other than being a bit short because the lofts are weaker than modern irons, they still work as well as anything else.

I also recently put a Wilson Augusta putter and Wilson Harmonized wedges back in the bag and they still work just as well as anything else does.

You don't need to buy expensive gear to play good golf.

If I could go back in time to when I first learned to play golf (I was about 9 or 10 years old), i would tell myself to continue playing. Instead, I quit golf after about a year and did martial arts, which was fun at the time, but not something I am interested in anymore. And then in my early 20s I tried picking up golf again, but only played with friends, that was about another year. And then in my late 20s, I tried again but only played for a few months.

So finally, I started playing again in July 2019, and really only started playing on the course again in Jan 2020. I guess I can still consider myself a beginner based on the actual amount of time I have played golf, its just that I first learned a long time ago.

I would have shortened my swing to where it is now. Length of swing does not equate to speed. I swing it shorter now with more speed than I did 10 years ago.

5-10 years I would've taken my first lesson before last year.

 

Go back farther and I would have played golf as a junior instead of waiting until 18 to start.

Take lessons, practice a lot without kids and buy fitted clubs right off the bat, could have saved a lot of money with all those failed experiments.

I don’t know, probably take a lot of lessons, instead of a few here and there (that helped but never stuck with me).

Don’t swing so hard, but I’ve made that mistake and slowed down literally hundreds of times - not sure why...

You can’t practice too much, as long as it’s always with a purpose. I play three times a week, I should probably play twice a week and practice once a week.
