Absolute longest ball no matter what?

Recommended Posts

If you were going to play in a scramble and wanted to hit the absolute longest rock there is, what would you choose?  Green side spin/feel/whatever doesn't matter since you can switch to your gamer for the approach.

Probably Nitro Ultimate Distance.  I played various Nitro balls last year and they were stupid long off every club, no spin though.  When I played them, if I hit one solid and in the fairway, they seemed to get like 50 yards of roll.

The only downer was that you pretty much had to aim for the front of the green and leave yourself with full swings into the green as much as possible because they don't spin very much.

I probably wouldn't change a thing and continue to play my normal ball.  I've never found "distance" balls to give me enough extra distance to warrant buying them for that rare scramble.

Love the Velocity. If you want something that isn't bottom of the barrel rock try the Bridgestone e6/e12 Speed. That thing has no stop on it.

IF I need carry distance due to fairways not rolling or soft, then its the Noodle Long and Soft (newer models / 2018 and up -- not Maxfli versions)

IF I get roll out, Titleist Velocity

Those are always in the bag for scrambles and for a second "practice" shot after I hit my normal shot/ball of choice. Just to see what I am really capable of 😀

Since I don't drive the ball very far and any extra distance I might get playing this ball in a scramble would be immaterial, I think I would be much better for my team if I signed up as a 25 handicap.  It all evens out, right?

I think the Velocity, while perhaps not the "absolute longest" gets you close and still provides some reasonable control.  I have played these a few times in our "Hard Rock Challenge" thread/contest and have recorded one of my lowest scores of the summer season with it.

I played one of the e12s I found last time I was out. You arent kidding about no-stop. I rolled that thing off the back of a 32 yard long green on my approach.

When Bridgestone launched them they claimed it was longer than the pro v, and yes it is. But.... that's it this ball goes a mile, is durable, and looks cool in the optic yellow, but it's no tour level ball.

I agree the Velocity is a long ball.
It reminds me of the older Pinnacle Gold, but the Velocity has feel to it.
I really like the Velocity for a non-urethane ball. I'll play them if I'm going to a new course or one with lots of trouble.

There was an older Callaway ball with an orange chevron, I believe it was the HX HOT PLUS. Thing was a rocket, always seemed to take a huge hop and roll forever in the fairway.

My gamer is the Bridgestone Tour BRX ball which is decently long.  But the E12 speed is consistently a club longer.  Haven’t tried the new E12 Contact.  The E12 speed though really runs out on both chips and putts too.

Snell MTB-X, and Pro V1X Left Dash!

Left dash is my new favorite ball. So awesome.

As for the overall topic, I've always been curious about this. We used to swear by Top Flite XL for this, but that was back in the late 90s / early 00s, and most scrambles we played were on unwatered courses, so 🤷. Most tests with the distance-focused balls seem to be with their target market (i.e. slower swing speeds), which totally makes sense, but leaves us "need 5 more yards for the long drive hole" guys hanging. For higher swing speeds (100+), I've heard the tour-level balls are as long or longer than the distance balls off the tee, but I'd be interested to see tests to back that up.

I've heard good things about Velocity and plan to try it this year. Prior gen Volvik XT have also done well for me distance-wise.

Wedges:  :vokey-small: SM9 46.10, 54.12, and 58.08, all with custom etchings & KBS Tour Masters-themed shafts, X-flex (CHA Post)

Putter: Total headcase and Putter Ho. Down to two main options in the rotation (one mallet, one blade), but have 4-5 by the basement putting green that might make it in the bag at some point this year... If you have the club head speed...Left Dash Pro V1x is stupid long off the tee.

To give you an example from personal experience:

GC Quad Session last week. 10 driver swings with the Bridgestone Tour BX, Left Dash and 2021 TP5X. I took the best 5

B Stone ~2,450RPM, 11.2* Launch, 167.5mph ball speed, 285 carry, 303 total.

2021 TP5X ~2,800RPM, 11.0* Launch, 166.5mph ball speed, 279 carry, 294 total.

Left Dash ~1,975RPM, 12.8* Launch, 166.2mph ball speed, 291 carry, 314 total.

Yea, but how do those compare to Top Flite numbers? 😂

With the Left Dash last year, I don't have the actual data to back it up, but gut feel was that I was hitting some of my best drives in the last ~10 years.

I still have some new in box Titelist DT SOLO Roll or something like that as well as Slazenger distance balls from about 2008 that were good for an extra 30 yards or more over the ProV1x I was playing. I had some silly long drives back then with those balls.....

TXG compared the ProV to the Velocity.  Bottom line:  At Matt's 118 MHP CS speed, ProV was longer.  left dash will be even longer at higher speeds.
