... We are not talking about one speed slot line that is also flush with the sole like the P790's or new P770's. They have proven to help shots hit low on the face. We are talking about 3 separate and individual slots across the front instead of one and 2 more additional slots behind those. Now there might be a technical reason for 3 instead of one and if they really work who cares what the sole looks like, although getting dirt in them is hard to over look. It just seems like a move to separate themselves on the shelf, which is a real problems that OEM's, especially the smaller piece of the pie guys have to fight for.

I'd agreed the TM application is visually cleaner. I'm guessing Wilson wanted the performance benefit without violating a patent and were able to do it with the 5.

According to @GolfSpy Barbajo's article, the Power Holes are there to allow for more low face deflection.

https://mygolfspy.com/wilson-d7-forged-irons-review/

For those of us who catch it a groove low more than we'd like, this kind of relief is welcome.  In my round the other night, I caught a 9 iron fairly thin and got plenty out of it.  So it's the same rationale as TM's speed slot.  Apparently they simulated hundreds of configurations of the Power Holes in order to come up with 20 or so finalists that they prototyped.

The aesthetics of the holes don't really impact my impression of the clubs.  Honestly, once I traded out my last set of Hogans for GI irons, I stopped caring about how clubs look.  If I want style in my bag, I'll pull out the Hogans or the Mac Muirfields.  I'm not noticing a real issue with trapping dirt in the holes because a @HardcoreLooper wipes the club down after every shot.  This may get tedious during a long range session; I solve that problem by avoiding practice as much as possible.  Maybe a piece of masking tape on the sole will help you you range rats.

As a C300 tester and also someone who moved onto the D300s afterwards, I never once had a problem with the power slots and dirt. Ever. Non-issue.

... I don't think it is ego as much as an annoyance. With so many really good irons out there right now, I get Wilson might need to do something to separate themselves from others. Having a bunch of unseemly slots that also gather dirt is just a deal breaker for me and I imagine quite a few others. That said, it will be interesting if the performance over rides the distraction. I am a Wilson fan so I hope that is the case. 👍

I can't say if the holes add any performance. But, having gamed the older Wilson C200 irons for the past 2 years, I can say undeniably that the power holes do not gather any dirt whatsoever. The C200 have holes around the entire boundary of the iron, which is a bit unsightly at address. To that end, I just ordered a set of the D7 forged irons, and I'm very much looking forward to a clean top-line and the performance gains.

Hope that helps,

Max

You’ve got to be kidding me!!!! It’s a conspiracy I swear. They are widening our street, putting in side walks, turning lanes and improving drainage. We’ve had at least two fatal accidents at the corner and far too many fender benders to count including a few that left vehicles in our front yard. So it’s long over due.

Today, right when I was going to head out for my first range session, they happen to dig a trench in front of my driveway in order to pave.

They told me that I should be able to get out in time to make my 2 o’clock appointment - I will throw my clubs in the trunk but chances are overwhelming that it will be raining by the time I can get to the range. :(

About the Power Holes - I gamed the C200’s for a year - I never had issues with dirt in the grooves. Of course I’m a shallow swinger of the club. But I play some with Sportsmen who games the C300’s and he’s got a much steeper AoA. I’ve never heard him complain about dirt in the grooves.

You certainly aren’t going to notice them with the club out of the bag.

Yikes! That is terribly sad about the fatalities. Hopefully the road improvements are effective at reducing accidents and are tax dollars well spent.

If you end up in a time crunch, could you possibly Uber or Lyft?

As for the question of dirt collection in the Power Holes - I also do not find that to be an issue.

Re the size of the club - I gamed Callaway X-14's for the last 16+ years, and then recently did a 6 week trial run with the Titleist T200's. I do think the D7 Forged fit in-between. Sleeker than my old Callaways and a bit more meat on the bone than the T200's. The T200's had a slimmer sole and topline. However, as a mid-high handicapper I felt that slimmer was not really better. To me, the chrome finish on D7 Forged, minimal offset, medium topline and sole, simple styling on the back of the club and some visible tech in the form of the Power Holes, equates to a classy looking club that also says, "I'm here to help."

So many clubs in the "Player Distance" category have visible tech in some way. The T200's have that badge/button showing where the polymer insert is located. The P790's & 770's have that little port on the toe (I think Cobra has this too), the Honmas have those visible weights, etc.

As the originator of the 'dirt in the power holes' firestorm, I feel a little guilty. I certainly didn't mean to suggest that I was picking up a toupee of turf that I had to painstakingly dig out, just that, much in the same way you should wipe off your grooves, I had a couple shots where I needed to get a tee out to clean out some residual dirt.

Certainly not something that would affect performance or anything. I just like really clean clubs 😇

Alright they kept their word and got me out of my driveway by 130. I went for my haircut and then off to the range.

IMG_2264.thumb.JPG.d006921fa09fe89c76ac21b9e2a7e9c8.JPG

No afternoon rain for the first time in over a week. It was a beautiful afternoon in fact. 88 degrees, nice sea breeze (off the Gulf so West wind.). I headed for the West range (we have two) thinking I would be downwind.

IMG_2265.thumb.JPG.03685e7c682942d447725e12cec066a4.JPG

Yuck!!!! We have had a lot of rain. The hitting area was way up front which would leave a significantly downhill lie off of tight wet turf. No thank you!!! So off I went to the back or East range meaning that I was hitting shots into the wind.

After stretching I got to it. First few swings with the GW were tentative but then I made a nice pass and off it went, high and just left of target. These babies are surprisingly easy to hit.

Remember I’m coming at this from having gamed GI irons for a number of years. I was concerned about less offset - no issue there what so ever. I was concerned about how I’d handle the longer irons. I could not believe how high I was launching the 4 iron - I haven’t hit one of those in at least 5 years. I mean I think I could actually hit it on the course!!!

Unfortunately because I was so into the wind my Rapsodo was not helpful today other than letting me know that I was straighter and launching it higher with the D7 forged than the regular D7. It’s also a much cleaner look.

IMG_2267.thumb.JPG.89a81c1ebaa9e780a8d586dea4e0f9ab.JPG

There’s no view of the back of the club like there is with the regular D7.

Since no one else was on that back range I even tried going to the side and hitting a bunch of 6 irons out of the rough.

IMG_2268.thumb.JPG.b4ddbeaf14a91f03384a1c1a2c8a86db.JPG

Overall it was a great day on the range. I hit a couple of drivers, a driver, 5 wood, GW sequence. A bunch of pitches out of the heavy green side rough and a half dozen or so bunker shots.

IMG_2269.thumb.JPG.647ce58f2f6f09333c9f96da17324849.JPG

Initial reaction to the turf interaction was extremely positive BTW

Got it to take some comparison pictures today. Got the D7 Forged 5i, 7i and Gap compared to my previous clubs in those spots. The gap is by far the biggest difference, the CBX2 is just so much bigger.

I also have a Sub 70 699 Pro 5i I'll take some pictures of as well.

5i's:

20200918_152845.jpg.10e2baf845e05c1f2455329728cabf61.jpg20200918_152817.jpg.137ba8ee24e5ef68e8b66c5a6db45df3.jpg20200918_152754.jpg.9c9f1a8212685bb2842e4f3e9cc7d786.jpg

The hozel is noticeably shorter than the i500, top line is very similar, overall the D7 Forged appears slightly smaller.

7i's:

20200918_152712.jpg.8d0a826b7c74f5d0d8ae60cc23377552.jpg20200918_152619.jpg.da026ba32386f979dd4e358ee8c25f88.jpg20200918_152602.jpg.9fe9534df1a2e1090ed35c26fa05c7b3.jpg20200918_152525.jpg.2719cd7a423d116ad7376df610a59ac1.jpg20200918_152542.jpg.47ded041a346caaf630b67722badb0d0.jpg

Again, D7 Forged had a shorter hozel. But other than the obvious color difference the look at address is almost identical.

GW:

20200918_153845.jpg.b09238b72c7bbafa5f646fbb97b69bf6.jpg20200918_153826.jpg.78d4b2947ad87cd9d023ede006969434.jpg

Overall, I really like the look of these. I've never actually gamed a chrome finish iron before. They really look good.

What would I change? I don't love what Wilson did with the Font/size/location for the club identifier. A little big, a little loopy and a little far out on the toe. But the look at address is spot on.

I played the First Tee executive course again tonight after work (irons only again).  I skipped the two shortest holes (both wedge shots), and if you put me down for pars (per the handicapping rules), I shot 69, +3, 7.0 handicap differential.  Pretty much my usual game.  Maybe I shouldn't carry woods.

Several of us (myself included) have talked about how good these clubs feel.  And as long as you hit them somewhere near the center of the clubface, they do feel wonderful.  But it's time for some real talk, folks.  Do you sometimes hit it out toward the toe?  I sometimes hit it out toward the toe.  With the Cobra F8's, a shot out toward the toe was really no big deal.  Sure, I'd notice it, but it's not like it really made much difference.  Not the case with the D7's.  Catching one out toward the toe is painful.  I mean literally painful.  Like little league aluminum bat on a cold morning painful.  And not only is it painful, it's a noticeable difference in distance.

Good 4 irons:

image.png.6e48dee4c094e9f6892d0f6b33103719.png

And bad 4 irons:

image.png.35275b0eddbb717f3e5f5e8eea8a4c55.png

So I'm losing a good 20-30 yards after a bad strike.  Since these were off the tee, all of them were playable.  But if any of them had been an approach shot over water, I'd have been screwed.  Whether or not I have any business trying to carry a 4 iron 200 yards over water is another story altogether.  I'm not the type that thinks this kind of feedback is good (a little Dr. Scholls on the face will tell you all you need to know about your strike).  If you tend to visit the toe-side frequently, you may want to think hard about whether or not you want this kind of drop-off in performance.  I've only hit this sort of shot with the 4 and 5 irons, but sooner or later I'll catch a 9 iron of the toe and let you know how that is.

I haven't had this experience. The toe side hit isn't my normal miss with an iron. It's definitely a miss I've had with my utility iron, and know exactly what you are talking about. But with the D7 Forged, I'll let you know if it happens.

Good format!  Did you feel like you weren't striking the ball as proficient as normal?  Both your 4i and 6i had quite a spread. I know off center strikes with my G410's can be 20 yards short.  Whether this is fairly typical across the spectrum of irons ... dunno?  So many of these mfg's tout forgiveness but we rarely quantify that in terms of yardage and dispersion. Certainly we should expect a PD design to have a smaller window of error than a GI but many of the marketing claims suggest this or that new model offers the best of both. This is where LM data combined with seeing where on the clubface the ball was hit is so useful in assessing attributes.

For me personally, that's how I view what these irons are all about.  The MGS Hit Squad loved them but I would sure like to see more raw data from that test group.  Unlike assessing the characteristics between a set of Titleist 718 MB's and Callaway Mavrik Max, seeing differences between adjacent category designs is more difficult.

Those of you testers that have access to LM's, it would great to see some data that includes contact area... even good ol' Dr. Scholls.

I guess this is a matter of perspective but my initial observation about toe hits was quite different - I got the feedback that I wanted but still sone CNN performance too - my typical miss is thin. I found that I lost 5 or 6 yards of carry on my Rapsodo on those misses.

Thins tended to be pulled a bit BTW which is new for me.

Okay got to the practice green before heading into church for our Saturday evening service. I wanted to chip with the GW.

Predictably it’s got a much hotter face than my SCOR 48 and so I was knocking them 6-10 past the first half of the session. I was able to adjust though and chipped it fine from a variety of spots and lies after that. It’s a larger footprint than the SCOR but far easier to chip with than the regular D7.

I do most of my chipping with my 52 anyway but I wanted to try this out.

Yeah, this happened to me today. Could not keep a decent impact position and was hitting everything super toe-y. As of right now, Arccos thinks my 3i, 4i, 5i, and 6i all go about 175 yards according to its 'smart range.' Meanwhile, scrolling back not too terribly far and you'll see my screenshot of the 202 yard 5i I hit.

I'm glad these tests are over a period of time or else I'd be really frustrated and confused.

Finally got out for the first full round with the set and proceeded to play terribly. Cannot fault the irons at all, my tempo was way too quick and I was just collapsing into my impact position, which is a swing flaw I've been working on for most of the season. Today felt like I reverted to last fall and all of the good swings I'd been making were just gone.

I did manage to get a couple videos! First, a couple for reference that I shot a couple months back (8i and PW with my Ping i210s)

And with the D7s, I've got a toe-side 3i push that went allll of 170 yards

and a 6i tee shot where I actually made decent contact. 176 to a center-left pin and hit 6i to the back edge of the green (about 185 on the fly).

Ok, so I know I don't have an apples-to-apples comparison here, but even still, you should be able to tell from the 8i to 6i just how much lower the D7s are going for me. 9 more tomorrow and 9 again on Monday. Hopefully settling in on my distances soon...

I haven't had this experience. The toe side hit isn't my normal miss with an iron. It's definitely a miss I've had with my utility iron, and know exactly what you are talking about. But with the D7 Forged, I'll let you know if it happens.

If your miss is heel-side, let us know how those are.

@fixyurdivot - I still feel like I'm getting used to them.  I'll hit one shot that makes me think these will definitely stay in the bag, then follow it up with another that makes me think these aren't going to make the cut.  They do feel a bit lighter to me, and sometimes I feel like I lose touch with the clubhead on the backswing.  I absolutely do not think this is the head.  I hit the D7's with the NM 105 shafts and the club's balance felt very similar to my old F8's.  I think there may be two things at work here:

1.  The Recoil shafts are just a little bit lighter than the NM 105.
2.  The GP Velvet grips I have on the D7's might be a little bit heavier than the thin-ish Lamkin REL grips I have on the F8's.

One of the things I got with the Club Champion fitting is a spec check.  I need to get them in and see just how good a job Wilson did at hitting the specs I ordered.  I wonder if the swingweight is just a tiny bit lighter than I'd like.

You noticed the spread in the 6 iron, and I had to laugh.  That 116 yard 6 iron was a cold top (I've hit a few of them with these clubs, actually).  I hit it right off the Power Holes 🤣.  The 211 yard 6 iron was absolutely flushed, slightly downhill, and it hit a firm spot in the fairway.  The ball was a little above my feet, so I was able to hit a slinging draw that just took off when it hit the ground.  That hole is really interesting - the whole fairway slopes from the right down to the left, so you'll always hit your second shot with the ball above your feet.  And there's a ton of trouble left.  It's a really good par 4.5, and I don't like going for the green with more than about a 7 iron, so I didn't go for it.

I'm feeling pretty comfortable with the 6 as my 185 club for approach shots.

I didn't give a full breakdown of the round, but it really could have easily been a couple shots better.  I missed two greens by about a foot, but our super likes to grow the rough around the bunkers really high, so I had two hack-outs instead of decent opportunities to get up and down.  Neither of those shots were all that bad.  Just unlucky.

@revkev - I'm willing to bet that your toe-side misses are closer to the the sweetspot than mine.  I can also catch the toe high, which makes me think they're a little fat.

A couple things that I wanted to mention on these clubs.

The build on them was great. No scratches, no wrong shafts, grips were perfectly aligned. No fingerprints on the chrome finish. I'll check the lofts/lies this week against their shipping sheet, but the build quality was perfect. I've gone over each club and can't find a blemish or any issue for that matter.

Mine were pristine. I hadn't specified the grips either way, so I was a little surprised to see them logo down, but even still they are perfectly aligned. Ferrules are snug against the hosel (an issue I've had on two different Mizunos) and there was not a fingerprint to be seen.

The attention to the little things that have nothing to do with performance says this is a company that cares.

... It will be interesting to hear about the specs because I have never had a set that came in with the correct specs. When I was on staff with an OEM (one of the big boys) I received my irons and the 8 iron was 2* strong and the 7 iron 1* weak so a difference of 1*. That is when I bought a loft lie machine. I was friends with the Mgr of Golfsmith and he adjusted them for me but I bought my first loft lie machine from them during Friends and Family. You would be amazed at even wedges that are not on spec. If you play a 52* and 58* and the is 51* and the 58* is 59* within a + or - 1 degree tolerance that most OEMs adhere to, you are dealing with an 8* gap and wondering why your wedge game is a little off.

... Since we are dealing with Wilson I will repeat a story about Bob Mandrella. When I was on staff with Wilson and my new irons came in I needed them 2* up and since Wilson was right here in town I was invited to meet Bob and have him adjust my irons. He had a big plywood board with some markings on it. No numbers, no lines just some black markings. He put each iron up to the board, then put it in a vice and using a hammer with a copper material splayed open he smashed the he!! out of the iron and then checked it again. 2 iron thru LW and he only had to hit 1 iron a second time. A true craftsman and it was such a treat to watch him work. I double checked them with my friend at Golfsmith and every one was perfectly on spec. I doubt there are any more old school guys like that around with all the digital equipment available today.

I have a bike handlebar phone mount on the handle of my pushcart. Holds it super secure and then I can just position the cart behind me to take swing vids rather than setting up the tripod.

2024 is the year of the short set!

You guys have any fit /finish issues?

I haven't had then checked for loft and lie but I didn't see any issues with mine. The shafts were all orientated the same, ferrules snug and no marks whatsoever on the heads.

Mine look beautiful but haven’t had them checked yet. Will when I go on to my fitter in a few weeks (to grab some real LM data)
