Got tired of my driveway markers...made some of my own sticks.  Hardwood, stain, spray, and polyurethane. 
One is a classic helmet color and stripe pattern for the University of Illinois, the other is a St Louis Cardinals sock. 

I get way more comments on the sticks than any club lol.

Really like the alignment sticks.   Looked up the cost for some dowels and thinking about making myself some.   If you don't mind sharing,  where do you get the endcaps and what is your process to taper the tip?

Endcaps are just 1/4" vacuum caps from Amazon.  Nice tight fit over the 5/16" dowel.  To taper the tips I just did a few circular-ish passes with an orbital sander to make it easier to slide the cap on.  Not really tapered, just somewhat rounded off.

Also if you're curious....I did two coats of stain, and then the paint sprayed one color a day with 24hr drying time and re-taping before next color.  And then three coats spray gloss polyurethane.  It was a week-long process and kind of tedious but I was really happy with the end result, especially for my ~$20 investment.

@csamsh are those 48” dowels, or 36”. Driveway markers are 48”, but my local Woodworker’s Club only stocks 36” (in hardwoods)

48, cut down to about 46.5

In a total rip off of @csamsh I built some alignment sticks out of 5/16" cherry dowel rods.  Colors are Syracuse U, Notre Dame and Washington Nationals. By coincidence, I just saw this website for Bubba Whips!  Are you kidding me?  $99-129 for alignment sticks just because they're made in the USA out of hickory?  Plus 3/8" diameter might seem bigger than normal, or maybe not.  I'll stick to make-my-own and give away as gifts.  FYI, for a great selection of color spray paint, I used Montana Gold.  100+ color shades

Nice @Finky999.  That bubbawhip price is a bit ridiculous, it's what inspired my project!
