Your Height & Putter Length?

6'2" | 35-1/2"... how about you?

Have you tested various lengths?  Do you just follow the generally accepted rule of thumb regarding physical height and length?  I won my putter decades ago at a company tournament.  It was a gift certificate to the pro shop and I dabbled with a few before choosing the B61.  As it turns out, it's the right length (or very close) for my height based on the rule of thumb.  Whether it is ideally suited for me I have know idea... yet.

5'10" - 34" putter.  I started out using 35" putters, then tried 34", then play 33" for a number of years and am now back to 34".  I found with a 33" that I was more likely to top the ball at times and I found with a 35" that I wasn't able to let my arms hang naturally like I like to.

5'10" - I use a 33" putter, and I choke well down on the grip.  It probably plays effectively at 31".

6'0" and for years I used a 32" putter.

After my Ping fitting 3 years ago, I am using an 34" counterbalanced Ping putter that has a 15" grip and I grip it near the bottom of the grip.

I'm about 6' 3" in golf shoes, and I've always used a 35". But I prefer a more upright posture, and I've recently felt like a 35" required me to lean over more than I care to. I recently did a putter fitting, and 36" was the sweet spot for my preferred posture, so that's what I'll be trying very soon.

6'-0 1/2" (that 1/2" is important, darn it!) using a 33" putter.  I've never been truly fit, but the 33" length allows me to hang my arms with my posture.  I'm certainly not the greatest putter on Earth, but I make my share.

6'4" and use a 37" putter. Picked up a demo model Anser 2 years ago and now I can't go lower as it feels like I'm hunched over. Recently picked up a TA #3 Impact from Golf Galaxy and immediately took it over to their in-store shop to get an extension and new grip as my lower back felt the strain just in testing it on their in-store green - or maybe i have poor core strength, haha.

I never used height, or wrist to floor measurement to determine putter length.  I use a 33.5 inch putter which I have found to be the best for me.  I am 5'5" tall.  I settled on that length through trial and error.  I think the style of putter also makes a difference.

I am 6'5" and use 35" A fitter told me you should use the shortest length putter you feel comfortable with.  I tried a 34" and I just felt too hunched over and my back would hurt after like 5 minutes of practice.  So it was back to 35"

6’5”, and my current SeeMore is 36”, down from 37”. During the video fitting SeeMore did, length was a crucial component, so we decided to go down an inch to see if things would improve. I’d say it’s been a beneficial switch.

5'11", 33" putter. For years played longer putters because of my height and wasn't until a fitter put a 33" in my hand did I know I had been wrong for so long.

I have long arms and also hunch a bit, with a slightly open stance. Just my natural putting stroke at this point.

The problem with the idea of using height to determine putter length is the length of your arms will have a huge impact.  Regardless of height some people will have shorter or longer than average arms.  Also consider how tall or bent over your stance is as well as how straight or bent your arms are and your height starts looking less significant.

That's why many putting fittings use height and wrist to floor measurement.  I still don't think that makes a perfect recommendation because some people use a more modern putting style that is more upright and others use a more classic style of being more bent over.

IMO, anther thing that often gets overlooked with putter length is how it can change your eye line.  If your putter is too short, it can cause you to stand on top of the ball too much and move your eye line outside of the ball, causing you to miss your putts to the left.  If its too long, it can move your eye line inside of the ball, making you miss your putts to the right.  I found when I played 35" that I always missed to the right and when I went 33" I always missed to the left but 34" seems to be the sweet spot for me.

Do you stand farther away because of eye dominance / how you see the line? Or just a general preference thing.

i was messing around with the line i see vs what is actually straight if i line up a ruler. Standing with my normal stance (close to the ball) a perfectly aligned ball and putter face looks too far aimed right. But if i stand back further from the ball, the same alignment looks on line.

I stand where I see the line the best.  I found the position/setup that lets me see the line as straight;  basically correcting the parallax error you described in your second paragraph.

Glad you figured it out.  Now you have to implement changes to make it work.  Best of luck!
