Can a pro handle YOUR course/Playing conditions?

Just by coincidence this showed up in my emails over the weekend.  Apparently the world record for low score on any golf course is 55:

https://golf.com/news/how-this-golfer-incredibly-shot-guinness-world-record-16-under-55/?utm_campaign=forecast&utm_source=golf.com&utm_medium=email&utm_content={date(&utm_term=Forecast Newsletter

There's no doubt that top Tour players could shoot pretty low scores, given a bit of practice and experience on any given course, but 16 or 17 under par is likely to be out of reach.

Great topic. The course I play most of the time is rated 73.6/131 from the tips at 6900 yards.  The greens were rebuilt last year, so they are still very firm and somewhat bumpy.  However, given smooth and fast greens, which we should see next year, I think a tour pro would shoot in the low 60's more often than not with the occasional round in the 50's.  I would love to see pros deal with our bunkers (usually hard pan) and rough (wet and thick in the early mornings).  Of course, given the extremely wide fairways, they would rarely be in a bunker or the rough.  If you could add 700 yards to the course and make the fairways 30 yards wide, the pros probably would still be shooting in the mid to high 60's most of the time.  They're that good.

Granted this is Tiger Woods at his peak but I knew that we recently had something on this.  It's simply taking his estimated handicap index and comparing it to the course ratings of a number of MGS staffers.

Lot's of estimated rounds in the 50's and a number of 55's.

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

SMT 4 wood bassara R flex, four wood head, 3 wood shaft

Ping G410 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

I am NE Ohio as well. Even from the tips, our courses are 200-500 yards shorter than anything on tour. Regardless of conditions these guys are going to have wedges into everything, and reach all par 5s in 2. They are going low. The only courses that would mess with them is Boulder Creek which is 7400 yards from the tips (though I've never seen the black tees set that far back). And the aforementioned closed Thunder Hill which was 7500 + over 100 lakes on course. At one point it was on the 100 toughest in US list.

IMO the tour doesn't want any part of courses like that, artifically tricked up by an insane architect. I think that's why, in part, they have the TPC network, so everything can be controlled and protected. Recall, back in the 80s Tanglewood hosted PGA events, and that only lasted a few years.

Take Dead Aim

You are dead on it about Tanglewood being tricked up. They even had it tricked up in the 70s when they played the PGA there I think around 74 or so. On my home course now a tour pro would take it apart. Supposedly DJ holds the record there from his college days with a 61 or 62 and the course had more bunkers then. I will say I saw DJ play some during his college days and he was good but no where near you see him today. With our greens being in pristine shape and the fairways great I would not doubt he could shoot 59 or lower now. Those guys could fly over the trouble with a driver or even a hybrid. The course is not really short short but it is designed for mortals in mind.

Sorry, but I'll have to disagree about Tanglewood. I played it the day after the Vantage in 1990, and except for the rough being longer, it wasn't any different than it was any day of the year. In fact, I played it two week ago, and the only differences were Bermuda greens, and fewer bunkers and trees. They also played the Vantage Championship there until the mid 90s, and the reason they stopped was they lost their sponsor ( RJ Reynolds Tobacco) when sports could no longer sponsor sporting events.

I played 11 last night before it got too dark and i took a couple pics of the less than pristine conditions the pros would encounter if they played it down.  All the holes have areas like these few pics, some more widespread than others.  They have had financial difficulties in the past and seem to be making an effort with re-seeding and re-sodding some areas.  I like it as a practice session since after 6 its never crowded.  Hit your drive, move the ball to a patch of grass and try a few different shots.  No meaningful sand trap or putting practice though.

birdie putt anyone??   the back 2/3 has been re-sodded i guess the front 1/3 will be done when the back 2/3 is playable.  they just should have move the pin to a temp green and done it all since you cant putt on that anyway.

I'm really confident the top 100 on all the main tours could beat me, 95% of the time with a 5i and putter... the top 10 with only the 5i.

This is the difference. All the talk about how pros can light everything up, but these conditions are way too many variables for most people, and the average considerations of a tour pro mean nothing with those greens. Thanks for sharing, sorry you had to go through that. 🙏

Two years ago my course held a pro-am. Our head Pro has a lot of connections so he was able to get a lot of good local level pro, and some lower your pro's to attend. One such lower level pro actually had a full schedule European Tour card for one year, 2 years prior to this event so was still a seriously good golfer.

The format was three members and one pro in a best 2 form 4 format. The pro's also had their own individual comp with the very small prize money coming out of the members entry fee. All the pro's attended to be part of the day, certainly not for a pay day.

This particular tour pro went round in a 2 under par 70 and placed second among the pro's to a 69. To put it in perspective the best member of the day was level par at 70 so although a few pro's shot better than the best am they weren't miles better. So although they could handle the course and it's less than stellar conditions they didn't rip it apart.

However when put into context, that 2 better for one round, is 8 better over a 4 day comp assuming that scoring trend continues. The pro is likely to shoot 3 more 70's while the am is less likely to shoot 3 more 72's.

I guess I've found a long winded way of saying that a good playing pro will shoot a better score than a good am on any course but not significantly over 18 holes. Shot dispersion, distance control and a general higher short game ability will enable the pro to navigate and avoid many of the issues less well manicured courses provide.
