PING G425

Recommended Posts

Just saw the tweet from MSG with the USGA conforming picture of the G425 LST driver. Looks like a nice evolution on the design will be interesting to see if they keep the black and red color ways or change it up again. I am sure it is still a ways off from the store shelves but it already has my attention even if I did just get the speedzone this year.

Yeah, early next year most likely.  Australia may get it in the next month or so.

Ian at TXG has the new 425 and really liked it.  Also said the G425 irons will be slimmed down a bit, a new I blade replacement will be out as well.   I500  and Blueprint are staying in the lineup

Great info and I will be interested to see what the irons look like. It does seem like OEMs are working to limit those trade offs, as they have in other areas, to slim down the GI irons (all relative of course) while still maintaining the forgiveness and ball speed characteristics they are looking for. Also always enjoy looking at new blades that I will never be able to play with any consistency.

correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like there's a tungsten weight, similar to the fixed position one in the G400 series, that is moveable but the tract is a lot smaller than the G410 series.

But the real question is...will this bring down the price of the G410s?

Hmmm...new tires for the wife's minivan or a new driver. One brings great misery and the other great joy...well...about 60% of the time. Decisions, decisions...

Yes, according to Tony in the home page article, the ports for the weights have moved in closer to the middle not as wide of spread.

Yes, on the 2nd part, the price drop actually occurred about 2 months ago, to $399.  I doubt there will be any future price drop.

I can't help you on that last question, but only wish you good luck 🙂

Interesting on the irons. I know I'm in the minority, but I love a big ol' chonky iron for confidence building. And Ping has always done a good job of somewhat masking how big the G series irons have been at times.

Great write up by Tony 👏.  I found his comment that he's certain were all the testers queried, the PING LST would win the "all time best driver award" (or something along that line). Also cool about the SFT being added to the threesome.  After hitting a friends G30 SFT 3w, I ended up acquiring the G400 SFT in 3w and 5w and the "straight flight technology" is everything they say it is.  I'll be interested to see how these perform to my G410 Plus.... hopefully at a PING Demo Days in AZ this coming winter.

Now that I can actually hit a driver well, I should do a brand agnostic fitting. Need to dial in best head and shaft. Definitely will wait for the 425 to come out so that it is in contention.

Right now I play a shaft in the 50 gram category and stiff flex, and I have no idea if that is actually the right weight and flex category. It works fine, but I don't know if there is something better suited for me.

PING is changing the color scheme. The red accents are gone in the 425 series, replaced by a stealth grey. Looks really good with the matte black... and yes, the turbulators are back.

I’m hoping the 425 Max is a replacement of the 400 Max, but I’m afraid it’s going to be more like the 410+, which was pretty underwhelming in my opinion. I’m surprised Tony said the LST was the best driver in the MyGolfSpy era. It’s a good driver, but when I saw the teaser, I thought for sure it was talking about the 400 Max. That club was a game changer for a lot of people, myself included.

I’m hoping for a big upgrade from PING’s 410 lineup, which I didn’t think a very exciting successor to their excellent 400 series. I’m not saying it was bad, I just didn’t think it was worth an upgrade if you were gaming anything from the prior edition.

I don't know why, but I just get along with Ping drivers. Ping K15 was one of my favorite drivers of all time. The 400 max was incredible. I am gaming the 410 now and love it. I'm not sure what the 425 can improve on. Just don't take a step back.

It's one of the things Ping does really well. Making sure the new release is better than the previous. It's why the G410 LST came out later than the Plus. It took them longer to get it better than the 400 LST. So we can definitely trust that Ping wouldn't be coming out with a full line if they weren't certain the new ones were better.

If you were properly fitted for your G410 there is a good chance the G425 would perform nearly identical if it fits your swing the same. The year over year gains are very small. You are not missing out really, of course that never stopped me from looking at new clubs months after buying some.

Those shafts may be Japan only. The shaft list is different for Australia for example: https://www.golfbox.com.au/clubs/ping-g425-max-driver/

On a different topic, I'm glad this Ping G425 Max has an adjustable weight. This Sim Max I have is a bomber but is very right biased. I thought it was me, but there are two many folks on WRX that are hitting off the planet balls to the right with the Sim and Sim Max.

Good catch.  I'm guessing we'll end up with the same choices as the Aussies.  Would be nice to have Japan's choices though.

It's one of the only things other than snowboard models that us Aussies get before the US.

I remember a weird conversation helping a friend choose their first snowboard last year. "The 2019 is last year's model... I know it's 2019 now. The 2020 is this year's model."

Cobra F9 9.5° (Hzrdus Yellow X)

Cobra Speedzone 15° (Tensei Blue X)

Ping has kind of been trending toward aerodynamics akin to the Taylormade SIM and Cobra for some time. I see that a lot more in this series of drivers based on the images released so far. I'm curious to see what Ping will say in their marketing materials surrounding this, and if there's really as much to it as it appears at first glance.

I'm not suggesting that Ping is trying to copy anyone - they've had a weight ports located at the back of their club heads for a long time and since the release of G400 there's been a slight change in the shape of the sole that shares some similarities with other designs currently on the market. Ping being a lot more consistent with their designs from year-to-year, it makes me wonder if they've been onto this for a while and were concerned about consumer acceptance of designs like M6, SIM, Speedback, and Speedzone.

Ping does always take measured approach that is for sure. The sole of the Ping is tending a bit like the TM or Cobra, though in a more subtle way. It make sense though as they have been putting tabulators, dragon fly, and the dots on the head all in the name of aerodynamics for a long time now, so looking at the aerodynamics on the sole seems like a logical next step.

That's what I see when I look at it. Wondering if they did some prototype testing years ago, but were afraid the aesthetics of such a design would turn people off and so have taken a much more subtle approach, or if it's just an evolution of independent discovery and learning from what other companies are doing.
