anyone carry 5 wedges?

Recommended Posts

I had to adjust my wedges to my new irons. The t300 lofts are crazy. My PW is now 43* and I have a set GW at 48* (essential my new PW). My wedge set up is 50*, 54* and 58* now.

The reason for the 2* loft change from my 48* t300 wedge to my 50* Vokey wedge is the t300's are super hot and both the 48* and 50* are mainly full swing shots, so my gapping works better with these lofts. The 54* is my versatile 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 shots from 70 yards and in, and my 58 is a K grind mainly for fluffy bunkers and rough around the greens. So including the PW I have ended up with 5 wedges. Ditched the 5 iron in my set and have a 5 and 7 wood, and a hybrid instead of my 5 iron now.

That was my exact setup while I was gaming my AP3’s. With the i59 PW being 46*, I really only need 3 more wedges, a 50* & 55* to go with my 60*. I find guys who hit their driver 285+ need more wedges to score with. My opinion is I’d much rather have a full swing than a partial. But with my new set, I’m going to have to learn some 1/2 & 3/4 shots with the 50 and 55.

Just three in my bag; 45/50/56.  I honestly don't think adding 1-2 others would be of benefit to me.  I've been looking at options to the PING Glide 56/12, mostly aimed at improved sand performance.

The past few months I have been toying with the idea of adding a 64* wedge for my bag for situations that call for a flop shot and then being able to use a normal swing without having to play around with opening the face.

Yikes. A 58* is scary enough for me!

i went with a different set of irons and my pitching wedge is 46* so now i have a more traditional 4 wedge setup at 46/52/56/60

nice, yeah I have the 52, 56, 60 for the MIM wedges and technically have the Forged Tec set PW and GW... but the GW is 48* (minus one from standard) and the PW is 44*

As long as you get your gapping right and are comfortable hitting any shot you need with the wedges you have I've basically stopped looking at what the wedges are called, and checking the lofts, which it seems like you did too.

Did you get any rounds in with the T100s before it got too cool?  Love to hear your thoughts on them down the road, they are beautiful looking clubs.

Like Micah above, when I was playing the Titleist AP3 irons I had to add a wedge.  The PW loft in the AP3 iron set is 43 degrees.  The gap wedge is 48 deg.  So I played a 52, 56 & 60 and it worked well.

If you want your ego stroked, that is a good set-up because when people ask what you hit you can say PW when they are hitting 8 or 9 iron.  That is about the only benefit though, because at the top end the clubs all ran together and I had trouble with the 4, 5 & 6 irons.

I now am playing somewhat more traditional lofts.  My current PW is 46 degrees.  I am now playing 50, 54 & 58 degree wedges.  My current 6 iron has about the same loft as my old 7 iron.

I’m playing 6-PW, I also have a 5 & 6 hybrid, a 7W & 4W, driver and putter.  I substitute a 4 utility iron for the 5 hybrid depending on conditions and course.  It is humorous though when people ask me why I have a 6 iron and a 6 hybrid?  The 6 iron is 30 degrees and the 6 hybrid is 28 degrees.  The 6 iron has a 120gram stiff steel shaft and the 6 hybrid has a 60 gram stiff graphite shaft.  The 6 hybrid goes ten yards further with a much higher trajectory and a slight fade.  The 5 hybrid has an 80 gram stiff graphite shaft.  It goes 15 yards further than the 6 hybrid but with less spin, a slight draw and a lower more penetrating trajectory.  Different tools for different shots.

The moral to the story is play what gives you the best and most consistent yardage gaps.  As long as the clubs do what you want them to do by delivering the trajectory, landing angle and spin needed and you have confidence in them, then it shouldn’t matter what number it says on the bottom.   The same with shafts.  There is no standard for iron numbering or shaft rating.

The advice that Gareth Raflewski gave the TXG guys about wedge selection and yardages for less than a full swing is pretty much the same as outlined in Dave Pelz’s Short Game Bible.

Depending on your unique launch angle, spin and carry distance you may need or want a different combinations of ball, shaft and head combination than someone else to achieve the same objective.

Tinkering is OK as long as it gives you the results you are looking for.

Play what works for you!

I carry 4.  My PW, Gap, 52 and 56.  I recently bought the gap wedge due to a hole in my distances.  I went by full swing distances which are as follows:

PW-135 yards

Gap-125

52-115

56 100

I just found that I had a massive hole in my set between 135-115 yards.  I didn't like changing my swing of the PW to try to baby a shot at say 127 yards, or having to really stand on my 52 to get it to maybe go 120, so I had to buy the Gap wedge to fill the need.  I will say, it is my LEAST used club in the bag.

When I was playing the Titleist AP3 irons I had 5 wedges in the bag.  The set PW was 43 degrees. The set gap wedge was 48 degrees and then I had a 52, 56 & 60.  My new set of irons has a PW at 46 degrees and I’m now playing a 50, 54 & 58 set of wedges. My 9 iron has 42 degrees in the new set and not surprisingly it goes about the same distance as my old pitching wedge.

My 6 iron has 30 degrees compared to the AP3 7 iron at 31 degrees.  Then I have a 6 hybrid at 28 degrees and a 5 hybrid at 25 degrees followed by my 7 wood at 21 and 5 wood adjusted down to 17.  I do sometimes substitute a 22 degree 4 utility iron for the 5 hybrid as they go about the same distance but have different trajectories.

I may have chipped in here before but my memory isn't what it was.

Following a 42° 9-iron, I play just three wedges.

In order to achieve useful gaps,

the 46° set-matching PW is not one of those.

I don't even order it.

I need to go to 48º for the first wedge.

If I used the set-matching 46, I might have gone up to 4 wedges,

and if I used one of those GI 9-irons of 40° or less,

then five would probably be on the table.

That would leave me with an overall set configuration short on long clubs--

I'm a multiple fairway wood player who also likes to bag a utility driving iron--

so the 42º 9-iron is a must.  Weaker than that eliminates a model from consideration for me,

even if I otherwise love it..

Just an FYI.  When you look at the thread title, if there is a star to the left of the title you have commented in the thread;  if it is a circle then you haven't.  If you look at the image below, the dark blue circle indicates new content and I have not commented.   The greyish star means I have read the topic and commented.   If the start was dark blue it would mean I have commented but others have commented since I last read the thread.

I now carry 5 wedges. As a senior golfer that still maintains some good length off the tee and a 3 handicap from the up tees (5400 yds), I found that a majority of my approach shots are now less than 140 yards. As far as irons go, I now only carry a six through nine and then I start with my wedges which are 47 PW, 50° gap, 53 degree with 14 bounce for chipping and pitching and 100 yds, a 56° which I usually use for sand and a 90 yard shot and a 59 lob which I hit about 80 yards.
