Driver Shaft flex and iron shaft flex different

Recommended Posts

I have a question for those knowledgeable on fittings and swing mechanics. A year ago, I was fitted for an Epic Flash SZ Driver and 3W with xstiff shafts (Fuji XLR8 in driver and Hzrdus Yellow smoke 6.5 in 3W) and retrofitted a set of speedblades (Up to XStiff FST 125 shafts) i bought as an upgrade to my hand-me-down set . Seeing my ball striking improve due to swing changes but not the results, I went and got fitted last week thinking something is up. Turns out my speedblades were still ~2.5 deg too flat for me (could be the new swing). I end up getting fit into PXG 0211s with KBS Tour Stiff shaft due to my 7 iron swing speed. My distances were similar to my old set and the dispersion much better. Anyways, my question is, should I be concerned with my driver and 3w flexes being X-Stiff and instead go with a low spin Stiff shaft? Could they be hurting me now in terms of distance with the swing changes I have made (slower tempo and more controlled, less swaying and not over rotating). Any advice would be appreciated. Also, I know someone is going to say this, and I know, get fitted to find the answer.

I would not be concerned about the different flexes.  It's about what works and feels best for your swing with that club.  I would suggest that you don't make the choices only based on a set of fitting numbers, make sure the fitting data translates to on course performance.

You are not alone having a little variety in the bag....

I have a x flex diamana graphite in my driver and s flex graphites in the hybrids and steel proj x lz 6.0's in 4-pw and 6.5's in the 49, 53 & 57.   That's what feels and works best for my game.  I may experiment with other shafts in the hybrids but they are working well at the moment so I am in no hurry to change them.

In reality,  the flex on a shaft is only a reference for a particular shaft;  there is no standard.  Stiff to one manufacturer (or even within the manufacturer but different lines) could be a regular to another and an XStiff to another.
