tell me about these two shafts

Chip Strokes

Recommended Posts

i don’t currently have any woods in my bag. i’m in the process of getting fit, and need extremely stiff and heavy shafts (phrasing) to handle my swing speed.

got paired with a guy today who had these in his woods and he let me hit them. the results were two phenomenal tee shots.

what do y’all know about these two?

Curious if you haven't been fit why you think you need extremely stiff and heavy? What is your SS?

TS Red 8X is high launch/spin.  Elements chrome is lower on each and lighter.

More fitting!

You should probably be carrying 340 or so.

I'm not sure what to tell you about them besides what you can learn by googling them. They're definitely on the heavier end as far as driver and fairway wood shafts go, but, at your swing speed, you could even go heavier.

The shafts have different launch profiles, as @csamsh said. If you want a lower launch on your driver and a higher launch on your fairway woods, the combo seems okay. If you'd prefer lower, I'd recommend you go with the Atmos Blue or Black variants. At your swing speed, though, I'd imagine it would be difficult to find heavy, stiff shafts that don't launch low.

If that's the case...neither is probably for you.  Check the Atmos TS Blue or Black, or Ventus Blue or Black.  They come in heavy/stiff options.

Mitsubishi also goes pretty heavy and stiff- Tensei white or orange, or Diamana DF.  Look at HZRDUS smoke green as well.  If you really feel like shelling out, perhaps an LA Trono.

i swung the smoke green a few times, really nice shaft. i’d love to try the trono...supposedly it’s very smooth for being able to withstand such high speeds. i’ll have to ask my fitter if he has one

If you liked the green, check out the buy/sell/trade forum on GolfWRX- used 6.5TX Greens popup fairly frequently for $175-200

I went thru this process, though in a lower rent district, in my early days.  I found the shaft that best worked for me, and completely by accident, was something just over 100g, in 2X flex.  I was approximately the hdcp you list with your ID, the low 20s, at the time, and because of that, everyone wanted to put me in nothing more than a Stiff shaft.  And frequently in the sub-70g territory.

Their efforts turned out to not be the winning combination they'd assumed.

Swinging at 130 plus, and especially just starting out, heavier is almost always better, IMHO (complete with YMMV caveats).  If they were still available, I'd even suggest dallying with steel wood shafts, at least as a starting point.  It appears that ship has largely sailed, though.

My 1.5 cents as I leave for my tee time  🙂

I love my Mitsubishi Tensei ck Pro white: it’s actually the lightest shaft I tried at 60 grams, which to me feels heavier because I feel the club head weight more than the shaft weight. I have the tour stiff but I only swing 118-121. They have 75 and 100 gram options as well.

If you’re considering the Hzrdus Green 6.5 TX, my builder can get the 80 and 90 gram tour only weights and likely has some in stock.  He did the last time I was there.  Even with your speed and that shaft, I’d only recommend a max of 1.5” tipping if that’s something you need.  This shaft becomes nearly unplayable with any more than that.  If you’d be interested in getting one, let me know and I’ll give you his info.

ETA...if you’re looking at the Fuji Ventus, he can get them in the heavier tour only weights too.

So I assume the UST was in the driver and atmos red in the fairway... going off that assumption there are so many factors to discuss... first yes the atmos red is marketed as a higher launching higher spin shaft... but if you look at a player like Tony Finau he use a Diaman RF (red board) which is the same marketing bs... his shaft is probably tipped to the max making it play much different... I actually used to use a 2” tipped atmos 8x in a fairway wood... but if budget is not a problem look at the RF or Ventus red both come in 8x/tx I think....

Second UST I have never used personally because of the way they look... I know that’s dumb if it performs but I would take the 2nd best all day if it looks so much better... that being said the same principle applies here you can manipulate a driver shaft as well... 135mph is impressive but means nothing if you can’t create a good launch window... a lot of talk about Bryson on tour but on Sunday Matt wolf out drove him multiple times swing 15mph slower because his launch window was better... I swing decent and used to game a Tensei pro orange 70tx in a g410 lst but when playing 3-4 days in a row that weight takes a toll... I switched to a sim with a GD AD XC 6x and tipped it 1” and the results are equal just not swinging the extra 30g or so helps the overall round... fyi Bryson uses an LA golf 6x which allows him to hit up on the ball easier... so many factors and how you release the club effects the way a shaft plays so much... good starting place would be. Ventus Blue or Tensei pro blue and see how you like it since those shafts are in the middle of the bell curve...

At that speed you need a shaft that is going to resist twisting... the smoke green is popular... but I would look at a GD AD XC in 6tx and 7tx and maybe looking at tipping it a bit... @Chip Strokes what shafts did you test

i tested an oban devotion 8 tx, smoke green pvd 70g in the 6.5 tx, and a few others i can’t quite remember now.

what’s a GD AD XC? sorry, shaft shorthand is greek to me

my fitter, coach, and i decided its best to keep letting lessons steer the ship for now and do another driver fitting at the beginning of the season when my swing is more consistent.

Also- makes sense about the face angle re: smash.   What were the spin #'s? I'm kinda terrified lol.
