DIY Stimp Meter help?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any guidance on building a DIY Stimp Meter?

I get the basic concepts:

  1. 36" long with a notch at 30"
  2. Ball should release at 20 degrees of incline
  3. Bevel the edge touching the ground at 20 degrees

Two main questions come up when I think about building one:

  1. What notch width, depth, and/or shape releases the ball at 20 degrees of incline?
  2. What is the simplest/cheapest product I can find locally to create the Stimp Meter out of?

I am guessing a piece of wood moulding with a channel in it might be easy to find?

As for the notch, if the ball is 1.680" diameter then 20 degrees of angle would be about 0.29623" or 19/64" or 7.524242 mm but, does the shape of the channel affect this measurement?

I am posting this to see if anyone knows because they have built their own Stimp Meter before.

Golf is simple - people are complicated.

I made one to use on the golf greens I built at home. I wanted to match the green speed at home to my course. I'll have to go get it out of my lower garage and send you a picture and measurements. But I used aluminum channel. A 90 degree "L" shape.  I'll try to go get it tomorrow.

It’s the correct angle at 12 inches off the ground at the 30 inch mark if I remember. You can start small with a small notch. Lift until it rolls. You want to to roll out of the notch at the 12 inch mark. So you’ll fine tune the notch. Making it bigger until at 12 inches the ball releases. Another way is Mark a 12 inch line on the wood or meter. Knell down with ball in hand, measure up your leg at 12 inches. Then place it down and hold it such at the 30 inch mark you’re at the 12 inch mark you eyed on your leg or even hold ball hand there and then let it roll by lifting finger away so gravity does all the work. No flipping

My dimensions are the same as in the link that cnosil posted. I used aluminum angle,. milled  the angle at the end and milled a flat for the set screw location. Drilled and tapped for the set screw and adjusted it until the ball released at the correct height and angle.
