Scoring in relation to par (Harry)

Recommended Posts

Just got an email that really peeked my interest so I dove into my own Arccos stats. Curious how you all are compared to the big data numbers?

https://mygolfspy.com/shot-scope-case-study-scoring-in-relation-to-par/

Link above goes over score on all holes relative to your handicap. For me its pretty much on the dot (handicap in Arccos is 7.9, official 7.1)

my handicap big data says 3.52 (Par3) 4.61 (Par4) 5.14 (Par5) so I am curious why my par 5 is the biggest gap...always thought they were my best, clearly not

Curious if handicap has similar big data for the scoring breakdown as well????

Anyway I did like reading this short article figured would share (sure everyone on here got the same one)

Interesting that you are higher in each, I take big studies like this with a grain of salt. Too many factors to make it a blanket statement.

Comparing to a 2, I am lower on par 4's and par 5's and even or close to on par 3's. I hate par 3's but on top of that my home course has 2 "par 4's" that say par 3 on scorecard.

Looking a little further I think it might be that Arccos is newer for me? This year and maybe just limited data? Used 18 birdies prior to this and those are: 3.5, 4.8, & 5.1.....who knows

Had to give my best guess on where I would be at around a ~6 when the article had 2 and then an 8. My stats (according to my Garmin) Par 3 - 3.3, Par 4 - 4.45, Par 5 - 5.2
These numbers match the sense of my game where I feel like I play Par 3's better than average (it doesn't hurt that none of my regular courses have much hazard trouble or anything on their 3's, but tends to be the same regardless), but don't take advantage of the 5's to get birdies as much as I really should be.

2024 is the year of the short set!

I find it really interesting that the scoring averages for the 2 handicap don’t fall in line with the rest of the handicaps. The averages being much closer between the 2 and 8 than the rest contradicts the idea that higher handicaps are more inconsistent. Maybe a difference in the data sample size? Or due to 2 handicaps playing more difficult courses? I’d like to know why that is...

The more I think about it, the more I feel like their isn’t really much to take from it, just a lot of questions. My scoring averages are way high compared to this data but I assume that’s because it’s September and my handicap is about 5 strokes better than it was in January. That gets me thinking about the endless variables that can skew the averages in such a big data set. Interesting, but not comparable to an ever changing handicap.
