iron fitting today

Chip Strokes

Recommended Posts

just got back from my iron fitting and i couldn’t be more excited

i hit a bunch of head and shaft combos with the focus being creating a set of clubs that i can grow into as i refine my swing and get better.

we ended up with titleist t100, standard loft, with dynamic gold x7 shafts 1* flat.

good swings with the 7i were producing beautiful high baby draws carrying 193-196 in the air.

i can’t wait to get them ordered up

How do you guys hit a 7 iron 195 yards??? You must be freaks...lol. I would never need a driver if I could hit irons that far! 😉

an excess of speed haha. my 7i SS is 108-110. driver is up around 135+

the nasty drawback to speed is that all your misses are magnified. the same miss that puts you 5-10 yards offline sitting in the first cut of rough puts me 40-50 yards offline and i’m dropping a ball.

I had hit a 7 iron (30 degrees) 180 in a fitting. Pretty sure the monitor was a little juiced, seeing more like 160 to 170 real world yards.

But yeah, 108 to 110 swing speed is way high for a 7 iron. Some people don't even have 7 iron ball speed that high.

I live in the land of hockey players, it's unreal how well that sport applies to the golf swing.  Combine that with baseball players and you get a load of folks in this area who can hit the ball a ton.  Not necessarily straight, though...

Even the kids, I've been paired with 12 year old hockey players who could hit driver 250+.  Gives a guy pause.  LOL

It's one reason why I don't have any trouble believing distances reported that so many scoff at in online forums.  Another reason, I'm formerly one of those guys (somewhat); I peaked in my mid 40s, hitting 30* 5 iron over 200.  I didnt know about the X7 equivalent at the time, I was close to buying PX 7.0.  And <poof>...  it went away.  LOL

former D1 baseball player and more recently a nationally ranked olympic weightlifter. i made my money generating speed through the middle.

a golf swing and a baseball swing are way more similar than people give think

Not trying to be snarky, but I'm surprised a 22 handicap was fit in Titleist's least forgiving T series iron.

yeah on its face that’s a fair concern

a few things are at play though. i lose (or lost) a lot of shots with my driver. that has a lot to do with my high hcp. i also don’t need the help that GI irons offer. they’re all long and launch the ball high.

lastly, im a very good athlete taking lessons and getting better quickly. in conversations between my coach, my fitter, and me, it was decided to give me something above my level now, and allow me to grow into it.

Yeah if you’re practicing and taking lessons, you want clubs you can “grow” into: I’m glad I got AP3s and not the AP1 that would’ve been easier to hit 2 years ago . Then again, I’d have an excuse to go get some all black T100’s

This is very true, I played hockey and baseball when I was younger and when I got into high school golf I was one of the longer drivers on the team (300+ yards not uncommon). I always explained it to people that baseball helped me rotate and generate a ton of speed and hockey helped me bring that down to the ground.

My old man sounding like John Daly "grip it and RIP it" probably helped that too 🤣

I’m the exact same mate, I have got back into golf a few months ago, and have always been decent at ball sports, so went with the D7 forged so I also could grow into them as I improve over time..
