Bomb it 300+ yds or Swing Easy and Accurate

Firebird

Recommended Posts

When I was allot younger I hit the ball a lot longer than I do now and was reasonably accurate, I would guess that 60% landed on the fairway and were 300+. However as I have got older I have found that I can still hit a drive 300+ but the accuracy has dropped dramatically. With the new driver - Epic Flash - I have taken a little off my swing and have found a good increase in accuracy but in doing so I have lost 30-40yds.

So the questions is do you bomb away or try to control your swing so that you end up on the fairway.

As we have been discussing in the other thread; distance first.  If I can fit a driver,  I am hitting driver.   While I want to hit the FW,  it isn't one of my highest priorities.

Yes, and yes.  I find that when I make a solid swing, without specifically trying to kill it, I get consistently good distance AND good directional dispersion.  That's the combination I want.  Its when I TRY to bomb it that I have really inconsistent contact, leading to loss of distance, as well as wild misses.  So to me control equals distance.

I agree with you on this;  I guess I interpreted the word control as prioritizing fairways.   On the course,  I don't go all out after the ball;  I swing my normal swing which as you said provides good distance and solid dispersion,

I am the complete opposite, I prefer a full shot in rather than trying to hit a 50-80m wedge. I will however go for it if I can get within 15-20m as I am pretty accurate chipping.

I’d ask myself what scores better... Accuracy is irrelevant if it leaves you with little chance of finding the green, and 300 yard drives are useless if you’re punching out of the woods. A lot of people associate swinging easy with accuracy and accuracy with scoring, I do not find that to be true. 30 yards is a lot of club on an approach. I’d use strokes gained to make sure you’re not just boosting fairway% at the expense of your approach play, and most likely scoring.

Depends on what you mean by "bomb it". Sometimes when I try to "bomb it", its an out of control swing (i.e. swinging out of my shoes).

If I swing at 100% then my accuracy goes down to unreliable.

If I swing at 90% then it goes 95% of the distance with 3 times the accuracy to about 2/3.

My 3/4 swing goes 90% of my distance with only about 50% accuracy.

So, my full swing is my 90% swing when I play.

My experience reveals that my driver set at 8 deg requires a bit more speed to create enough backspin to keep my shots online enough to be usable. When I go through a slow swing phase then I turn up the loft on my driver to keep the spin high enough to help me find fairways.
