Thanks for sharing! I know I've seen this article before. It's possible it was shared earlier in the year when it was first published. Great for other people to see it that haven't had the chance yet though.

Amen.  That's why I love this site so much.  Its funny, Ive mentioned MGS on other forums and people always get salty about it, especially the ball test.  I even had someone on another site tell me that MGS' golf ball test was flawed and that, "soft is slow" is wrong.  I had to tell him that I found that very hard to believe.

Well, it *is* speed dependent.  Just look at the ball speed data from the wedge shot.  😉

Id say it is but it isn't.  Id say that it isn't because compressing the ball has been show to not really matter as much as we once thought and because if speed and compression mattered, then a ball wouldn't work off of the driver like it would off of irons like it would off of wedges.

I mostly reject the notion that some have that a softer ball will give you more distance because it springs off of the clubface more.  That may be true for people with very, very slow swing speeds but the data doesn't really bear that out.  That's also what I was trying to explain on the other site Im on but the person simply didn't want to accept it and just told me I was wrong and MGS is wrong, yet their data and their test was right.

I agree with you, that low compression argument is a little odd.  IMHO, it's similar to the "slow speed players can't compress" the firmer balls.

However, the ballspeed gap between softer and firmer balls narrows as swingspeed decreases; it appears to not be a linear relationship.  It's something that seemed apparent a couple decades ago in discussions about the Lady/Laddie balls; higher swingspeeds reported losses of distance hitting them.  The recent data supports this.

It's the narrowing of the gap as speed decreases that shouldn't be overlooked IMHO

Joined and donated after reading the ESPN article - great stuff.  That said until the ball study had thought the compression concept anecdotally (from my own shots) seemed to come into play that very soft golf balls do not have same distance as more compressed balls.   The study testing was able to show many more issues.

On compression in the golf swing, the technique of compressing the ball in the swing is not that easy and most golfers cannot execute this correctly or consistently.  So once again we can debate the benefits of equipment vs. lessons now that we can select the "right" golf ball.

Right? Never understood why people get so salty about a group of people doing their own thing. Probably employees of other golf review sites lol.

More and more people are going to realize what a great side MGS is. Because of MGS I tried the Snell MTB-X and as soon as my inventory of TP-5s is gone, I'm making the switch!
