Need reviews on secondhand irons

Pickle_Rick1996

Recommended Posts

I am very new to golf (2 months) and have slowly replaced my clubs from the $20 set from the 80s I bought in a thrift store. I have a M1 driver, milled grind 60 degree wedge, and white hot pro #1 putter. My next upgrade is the big one: irons. I want forgiveness with irons but not so much that when I progress to a point where I’m swinging fast enough to not need them anymore. The ones I have been looking at are: TM Tour Preferred CB, Taylormade RSI1, RSI2, Titleist AP2 714, and Wilson D300s. I am looking for forgiveness that doesn’t break the bank. Anything helps!

I’ll throw it out there first, so 993 additional spy’s can come in behind me: go get fit. Try to not pay attention to WHAT you’re hitting, rather how they feel and what the ball flight/dispersion is. Your clubs will find you.

Forgiveness has very little to do with speed. It's more about consistency of swing and delivery.

Of the list, I'd recommend the D300s since I've played them and they were extremely forgiving with great flight, plus you'll most likely find the best deal for them on the used market.

What did you switch to after the d300s?

Cobra Baffler XL, but my switch was only due to needing to go back to graphite shafts due to tennis elbow. If I could have grabbed the D300s in graphite, I would have in a heartbeat.

I always like this question because it is so tricky. Getting fit is the best option, but you are right generally most fitters only offer the latest clubs. Going to a good fitters just to learn more about your swing and they might be able to help you get in the right ballpark. Also some fitters have clubs like Maltby which new are very reasonable 600 or less.

Similar is an option like Sub70 which has good price point and while you can't get fit since it's online only I have heard great things about people calling them up and talking through the options and coming out with a great solution, check out this review of one of their iron options. Good luck on the search.

I am afraid that if I get fitted I won’t get the budget irons I want since most of the clubs in the shops are a year or 2 old and used clubs from recent years have not really dropped in value

I can relate all too well.

You can still test clubs at a Dicks or PGA Tour Superstore and find your swing speeds. That will at least help you understand what flex shaft you'd want.

I bought clubs without being fitted because it was what I could afford. A fitting plus the price of new clubs was more than the clubs I bought + all the rounds of golf for that year.

Where are you located? You may be able to shop local and test those used clubs at a range before you buy...

Tiger is the GOAT, change my mind.

Do you have any golf shops near you that deal in used golf
Clubs? Getting fit can simply be trying different used sets to see what works best for you. Most places have a launch monitor for you to capture numbers and assess how well the clubs work for you. Look at carry distance, how consistently you hit the ball from a dispersion perspective, maybe launch angle and spin numbers.

All the clubs you listed are good clubs, the question especially in the used market is can you find the shaft head combo that works for you.

You could try something I did when everywhere was closed during the spring - I bought used clubs from the Callaway preowned store, and they have a 15 day playability guarantee - for the cost of shipping them to you and back again (less than 20 bucks, I think), you can try them out and send them back if you don’t get on with them. They have frequent sales with great prices, and they also have an eBay store that has free shipping and free returns. It also has the benefit of letting you try more than just a 7 iron off a mat in a store - you can take them out on the course in real conditions.

Based on what I saw when I did a quick search on eBay for used Wilson D300s, it looks like you've identified a pretty reasonable price point for a new golfer. As @russtopherb said above, forgiveness has nothing to do with speed - plenty of high swing speed players need as much forgiveness as they can get - so I wouldn't worry about that. Buy what you think will help you the most while you continue to learn. Believe me, once you reach a point that you're seeing notable improvement, you won't mind purchasing a different set of irons to accommodate your evolving needs.

This is exactly how I fit myself, in a trial and error process that took a few years, once I got started.  It may have been cheaper to get an actual fit, though the high tech fittings were largely not available when I was doing this myself.

I'm also of the opinion it wouldn't have been as much fun with a "real fitting."  😉   I got to hit and play a *lot* of different clubs over the years, and a lot of different shafts.

Have you stopped by Maple Hill in Grandville to see what they have available on their used rack? I know with this summer's increased demand for golf equipment their inventory is lower than normal, so maybe they are picked over. But they usually have a nice selection of 10-15 used irons sets, some in your price point. At least then you can hit them for a bit and see if you like them.

Worst case - they will have demos of this year's stuff that you can hit on their range as well. At the very least you might find out what you like/dislike, and then you can go back a few generations to something cheaper. For example, you could try the Wilson D7 irons and make a reasonable comparison to the D300s, etc. Not a perfect comparison, but at least you can get a feel for what you might be buying.

Such as I'd heard, the irons with face slots had issues.

If you are looking for the most budget option, I’d recommend going with GigaGolf.com
That’s where pretty much my whole bag is from and they’ve always been fantastic to work with. They have a basic online fitting tool that will recommend lie/length adjustments based on your height and wrist to floor distance and flex based on usual ball carry. Plenty of options for grips and shafts too that won’t break the bank. I would take them over pretty much any used set.

2024 is the year of the short set!

Another approach to try...  If there's any way you can borrow a set of irons that were made after 2000 from a friend/relative, do this and invest the money in lessons.  If you're just starting out, your swing will change so much so rapidly that what works for you now will likely not work for you in the near future.  Lessons will improve your game and bring more enjoyment faster than new (to you) clubs.  My next recommendation would be to keep an eye on shopgoodwill.com and see what they have at a fairly low price.  There's a set of Mizuno JPX EZ irons there for about $200 that would probably be OK for you until they're no longer appropriate.  But still take some of that money you would have spent on more expensive clubs and invest in lessons.

There are lots of very smart forum members here and honestly, there's no one right way to go with this.

Being as new to golf as you are i'd take some lessons to get on the right track swing-wise and hold off on the fitting.

If you don't have friends with different clubs they'll let you try, you can get single demo clubs off ebay to try out and then decide which set you want to get for now.  I'd go for 3, 4 or 5 yo irons to keep cost down and that will let you see trends in your ball flight pattern as you start to play more which will help a fitter when you get to them.  You can then sell your set and get a few bucks back.

I'm quoting this for its excellence.  I don't have a real comment, just think you summed it up very well.

Did the RSI have problems across the board? Or was it just the RSI1, RSI2, or RSI MB

Pickle_Rick, not sure if you're still looking for clubs.  I'm late to this post, I know, but I'll give you my input on a set of used RSi 1's.  I found a set for about 1/3 of their current resale value due to some damage to 4-6 irons.  As noted the Taylormade's which used face slot technology have issues with faces caving near the slots and sometimes the slot material falling out.  This the case with the 4-6 in my set - there is some caving to the faces but slots are still in tact at this point, 4 is worst and 6 is very minimal.  From my research this happened to almost all the generations they put out but there may also be some effect attributed to the player as some reviewers say they never had any issues.  However, it seems it happened more often than not.

I've had my set at the range multiple times and have played two rounds with them.  I have not noticed any further damage to them to this point.  Clubs are forgiving, balls feels good of the club, and I did gain about 10 yards per club compared to a 2006 set of Tommy Armours I had previously.  I have not noticed any "mishitting" due to the damage.  That is not to say they won't continue to get worse as they are played more.  Because they were so discounted I grabbed them with the thinking that I'm getting new technology (they came out in 2015), I don't use a 4 iron that often, and at my skill level I don't know that I would significantly notice an effect due to the damage.  I shoot in the 90's to mid-90's.  Also, if I continue to get better where they are affecting my play I can upgrade to another set and feel that I have gotten more than my money's worth with the RSi's.  That's my logic anyway.  Could be flawed.

So, if you did find a set of RSi's just keep in mind the faces will most likely start to cave on the irons that have face slot (down to 8 iron).  If you find a set that is already damaged and are super discounted to a price you are comfortable with I would consider buying them with the understanding of what you are getting.  Sorry again I'm late to the post and this may be no help.
