Popular Post chisag
I only have 2 rounds in with my 17* Callaway Super Hybrid but was very impressed and since end of the season deals may be here I wanted to post a mini review. I would have thought almost all club ideas had been exhausted by now but I think this Super Hybrid is almost a new category of it's own. I found the Super Hybrid to be a cross between a hybrid and a fairway wood. A little larger back to front than a hybrid but smaller front to back than a fairway wood. If you are a sweeper this is a great club to give you the best of both worlds. With a shaft about 3/4 - 1" longer than a hybrid it produces more distance. And about 3/4 - 1" shorter than a fairway wood it can provide more control and accuracy. I was playing with a guy yesterday that was about the same length off the tee and on a par 5 he was about 5 yards in front of me. I hit my 17* SH producing a nice mid-high trajectory and was a little shocked by how far it went. He hit his 5 wood and with a higher trajectory ended up about 10 yards behind me. 15 more yards compared to a 5 wood is a nice thing to have in the bag. Off the tee it is even longer. And it seemed plenty forgiving and I imagine the 20* Super Hybrid would really be ideal for a lot of players. Again I only have 2 rounds in with mine but it doesn't feel like a honeymoon, more an instant addition to my bag. I have 2 holes I play where a 5 wood is a little too long and a hybrid not quite long enough and think my 17* Super Hybrid should work perfectly. At $319 I found it just too expensive for an experiment, but Callaway Certified Used had one Like New for $203 with free shipping and I am glad I took a shot with it. If you haven't hit one, I strongly suggest you give one a demo. Micah T, Herts JoaTMoN, cksurfdude and 12 others 15 Quote Driver: Qi10 10.5* ... Ventus Red Velocore 5R Fairway: Qi10 5 wood ... chisag
... Update after round #3. The Super Hybrid continues to be very impressive. On a tight driving hole I hit it 230 and set me up for a birdie. I do not hit hybrids 230 but the extra shaft length combined with a hot face makes this club "Super" playable. On a par 5 I had 225 and hit it thru the green as it is slightly downhill but very pleased with the shot. And I also proved it holds no magic when I had a slight downhill lie on another par 5 and hit it just a hair fat, on the toe and it produced a weak low 180 yd slice. BlueBama
Hey Sam (This is Nat). Great review. I’ve hit the super hybrid and agree - it is a special club. For me it is a little hotter and the shaft is 1" longer so I have gained quite a bit of distance. Every now and then the LS was silly long too but the SH is just another level. cksurfdude and sirchunksalot 2 Quote Driver: Qi10 10.5* ... Ventus Red Velocore 5R Fairway: Qi10 5 wood ... BMart519
Great feedback. I never checked into the specs (because of the price tag) to see the shaft is a bit longer. My 17 degree hybrid is a Cobra Baffler Rail-H from 2011 and I rolled it onto the front edge of a green 240 off the tee yesterday. I've been thinking about 16 degree hybrids (Srixon, PING) to see if there is anymore distance I could squeeze out of that spot in my bag, but a 1" longer 17 degree would accomplish the same goal with added club and ball speed. Just not sure if I am ready to let go of my favourite club, even as it approaches 10 years old. But as the SH get older and show up at the used stores and websites it is definitely on my short list as a sweeper of the ball. cksurfdude and ole gray 2 Quote G425 MAX Driver & 5W Baffler Rail-H 3H-4H 699 Pro Utility V2 - 4i APEX CF19 6-AW INDI Wedges 52, 56, 60 EAS 2.
edingc
I concur with @chisag. This thing is awesome! I picked up the 17 degree hybrid, turned it down to 16 degrees, and it launches bullets. First round out with it today and I hit a couple in the 230-240 range. First swing of the day was 235 yards uphill on soft ground. Perfect replacement for my 3 wood which I never felt comfortable with. From the practice I've done and this round, I can also say the Super Hybrid is more forgiving than my 3 wood was. chisag, ole gray, Herts JoaTMoN and 3 others 6 Quote Unofficial WHS Handicap: 7.5 / Anti-Cap: 13.0 (Last Updated Feb. 19, 2024) Driver: Callaway Paradym TD (10.5°, -1/N), 45.75", Fujikura Motore X F1 6X | Fitting Post 3 Wood: Cobra RadSpeed Big Tour (14.5°), 43", Fujikura Motore X F1 7X 20° Hybrid: PXG 0211 (2020 Model), 40.25", Mitsubishi Tensei AV RAW White 90X 4 Utility: Cobra KING Utility (2020 Model), 38.5", Aerotech SteelFiber i110cw Stiff 5-PW: Ben Hogan PTx Pro, 37" 7 Iron, Aerotech SteelFiber i125cw Stiff | Club Champion Fitting 50°, 54°, 58°: Edel SMS, V Grind, Nippon Modus 125 Wedge| Official Review Thread Putter: L.A.B. It doesn't seem to have much of a hook bias like the SpeedZone hybrid that it partially replaces. Tee shots today with it, as reported by Arccos: 235 yards (downwind but uphill, probably was one of my best swings of the day) 225 yards (high on face slight fade into the wind but downhill) 217 yards (low pull hook into the wind) 227 yards (low pull downwind but uphill) I also re-teed a few of the low hooks just for practice and hit some that went 10-15 yards longer and straighter. For reference, my three best drives were 248, 250 and 258 today. Ball wasn't flying in the temps and I got pretty tired (hit two buckets at the heated range before playing). I really hope to keep moving those numbers closer to 240-250 with the Super Hybrid and 270-280 with the driver. cksurfdude and Vegan_Golfer_PNW 2 Quote Unofficial WHS Handicap: 7.5 / Anti-Cap: 13.0 (Last Updated Feb. 19, 2024) Driver: Callaway Paradym TD (10.5°, -1/N), 45.75", Fujikura Motore X F1 6X | Fitting Post 3 Wood: Cobra RadSpeed Big Tour (14.5°), 43", Fujikura Motore X F1 7X 20° Hybrid: PXG 0211 (2020 Model), 40.25", Mitsubishi Tensei AV RAW White 90X 4 Utility: Cobra KING Utility (2020 Model), 38.5", Aerotech SteelFiber i110cw Stiff 5-PW: Ben Hogan PTx Pro, 37" 7 Iron, Aerotech SteelFiber i125cw Stiff | Club Champion Fitting 50°, 54°, 58°: Edel SMS, V Grind, Nippon Modus 125 Wedge| Official Review Thread Putter: L.A.B. Vegan_Golfer_PNW
So outside of the CPO sale, why would someone go this over the SIM DHY for example? just because this looks more like a wood but a little shorter? I should find a place to hit these and see what I need. Would love something to kick out my 3w and 3H. @edingc and @chisag how are the ball flights for you? My SH shaft is 2.5" longer than my DHY so it is considerably longer from the tee and fairway. I can also choke down and play the SH from light/medium rough. The DHY is basically a 3 iron on steroids and my SH is basically a 3/4 wood replacement. The SH is also lower launching from the fairway but can be placed more forward in my stance and hit higher. If I absolutely have to hit a fairway I will use the DHY off the tee but if I want more distance I will use the SH. I have the same shaft in both and they produce a mid/high ball flight but I can flight both lower when needed. I find both clubs extremely versatile and plenty forgiving. Could these replace DIs and how do they compare to the DHY (speaking more Chisag on this one)? At 16 degrees it gives me a fairly flat flight, which is fine. Admittedly, I'm struggling a bit right now getting height on my longer clubs (driver included) so that may change as I continue to work with it more. The one I caught a bit higher on the face actually flew pretty darn well and was a higher flight. Being 3 degrees stronger than either of my "driving irons," it goes quite a bit further. This one specifically was bought to replace the 3 wood, of which I would never hit off deck so it was way too one dimensional. I've decided that driving irons aren't for me, at least right now. I will be rocking driver, Super Hybrid and then the 21 degree Epic Flash hybrid that's on the way at the top end of the bag. chisag, Vegan_Golfer_PNW and cksurfdude 3 Quote Unofficial WHS Handicap: 7.5 / Anti-Cap: 13.0 (Last Updated Feb. 19, 2024) Driver: Callaway Paradym TD (10.5°, -1/N), 45.75", Fujikura Motore X F1 6X | Fitting Post 3 Wood: Cobra RadSpeed Big Tour (14.5°), 43", Fujikura Motore X F1 7X 20° Hybrid: PXG 0211 (2020 Model), 40.25", Mitsubishi Tensei AV RAW White 90X 4 Utility: Cobra KING Utility (2020 Model), 38.5", Aerotech SteelFiber i110cw Stiff 5-PW: Ben Hogan PTx Pro, 37" 7 Iron, Aerotech SteelFiber i125cw Stiff | Club Champion Fitting 50°, 54°, 58°: Edel SMS, V Grind, Nippon Modus 125 Wedge| Official Review Thread Putter: L.A.B. cksurfdude
So I ended up picking up a Super Hybrid off CPO early in December .. got a 23° and picked one with a much lighter, flexier shaft vs the standard Tensei CK Pro Orange .. a PX Catalyst 70 in 5.0 flex. I don't have the requisite swing speed for the Tensei Orange, and I was looking for a little more launch. As a backup, just in case ya know , I also picked up a Recoil in F3 (which I've hit before and like) in the same playing length. Well... First tryout at the range, and... I love it. Very satisfying *pop* off the face and got the really nice launch I was hoping for, and.. in a really pleasant bonus .. a straight ball flight with the distance I was looking for .. yyeahh baybee edingc, chisag, ole gray and 2 others 5 Quote WITB of an "aspiring" play-ah ... Vegan_Golfer_PNW
Quick question for any one who knows. I am going to pick up one of these but don’t know what stiffness to go with as I hear it plays stiff to flex. Leaning stiff but none available on CPO. chisag
... OK fellow MGS'ers I am gonna sell my 17* Super Hybrid. It was an absolute go to club for me back in the soft Midwest conditions but on these fast and hard Phoenix fairways I can reach every par 5 on my home course with a 4 iron or my DHY. Only used my SH once and it rolled off the back of the green. I still find it insane I can reach a green from 240 using my DHY. The SH 17* is too valuable a club to let it sit in my bag unused so gonna sell it to someone that can put it to good use!
