Matte Golf Balls

I remember hearing Tony say he does not like Matte golf balls. He had a performance reason. I thought there was an article about it but I cannot find it.. Anyone remember the reason? Or able to point me in the right direction?

Not sure if it was from the ball test, but could have been. I know he has brought it up a few times on no putts...

This was a topic on this No Putts Given Podcast. (specific comment at 38:05). The negative is related to ball being wet.

Probably not the best thread for it given the matte ball bashing, but since I'm switching to the Pix, I have about 50 near mint Project (s) matte orange balls I'll sell cheap 😉

Love the Cally Supersoft Matte green!! Also have the red..you can see the green ball from all over the course.  I love the feel, and distance is not a problem(my swing speed is 80), and the SS has nice manners around the green. This ball is my gamer all year. When it gets cooler here in the Chicago area, I don't have to look for a softer ball. Have played the same sleeve for 3 rounds with no problem-got a little dirty. Ball washer cleaned them up no problem. Never thought about moisture absorption. Ball performs for me.

The problem with the matt finish balls was moisture staying on the outside of the ball not moisture absorption. The ball would slide up the clubface more and not grab as quick to promote the desired spin. If you don't play in the morning with dew or on rainy days you will never notice a difference other than getting dirty faster.

Absolutely hated the maxfli tour x in matte finish. Had no idea I bought them vs the standard color. Too much spin. Didn’t feel like the gripped as well on the grooves for iron shots.

This is a little confusing to me.  If it doesn't grip well, it should have too LITTLE spin, not too much.  Or was it too much spin with some clubs, and too little with others?

Instead of feeling like their was solid contact on wedge and shorter iron shots it felt as if it started spinning up the club head along impact. It never felt like it fully engaged at impact. As opposed to the direct contact on the club face at impact prior to the ball beginning it’s ascent

With the driver I would say it amplified spin numbers. Especially side spin on fades.

It is interesting that the matte ball segment seems to be growing. I really do not understand the popularity..

I play matte in several colors (easier to see than white for my old eyes) and they perform very well for me however, they do hold the mud and dirt more than a glossy ball. With no ball washers on courses last year (in PA.), it was a pain cleaning them during a round.

Ping G400 Max @ 9 degrees

Ping G400 Stretch 3W

Ping G400 3i Hybrid

Cleveland 2009 launcher 4i Hybrid (also a 2i and 1i not currently in the bag)

Ping G700 5-9, PW, GW, SW (Green Dot and 3/4" length addition)

Ping Glide-3 60 Deg. LW (Green Dot) (also a Glide-2 58 deg LW and Glide 54 Deg SW not in the bag)

All Golf Pride CP2 Wrap Midsize Grips

Cleveland Huntington Beach Soft 11 Putter 35" w/oversize grip

Looking forward to playing Maxfli Softfli matte green. Recently found a Maxfli Softfli matte white ball on the course while looking for my ball in the bushes. Never found mine, but put the Maxfli in play right there, 9th hole, played it till the 17th, where my tee shot found the water on the left. Finished the 9th with bogey. Parred the 10th par 3, just missed a 15 foot putt for birdie. Drove the green on 11, par 4 at 240 yards, made birdie. Actually played pretty well with the Maxfli ball, so I decided to pick up a box, matte green, for my next round. Possibility this weekend...want to see how it plays compared to the Cally Supersoft, which I have used since 2019. Anyone else play the Maxfli Softfli??
