GolfSpy AFG’s Speed & Swing Odyssey

Recommended Posts

I completed my final workout in The Stack System's Heavy Hitter program, and did my new baseline today.  It's actually the first time I'm a bit disappointed with the Stack, because I never got anywhere near the peak speeds I've seen with other programs.

HHFInal1.PNG.67fb22e0e22fafc46d6251900f18e69a.PNGHHFinal2.PNG.bef93711045a5fe63e46eb1793a383fa.PNG

107 is well off of previous eSpeeds, and my Progress Check speed of 111 is 4 mph off of the baseline I did before going in to Heavy Hitter.

After doing today's Progress Check, my main takeaway is to not second-guess the app anymore.  In Heavy Hitter, I could swing the heavier training weights at a fast speed, but when it was time for max work at lighter weights I just couldn't make the switch and find a new gear...it's almost like my brain was just content to swing at the speeds of the heavier weights.

I'll be happy to start Full Speed Spectrum on Monday and intend to trust the AI going forward.

  • 1 month later...

Haven't posted here in a bit, largely because my speed and physical training efforts have been stuck...dare I say even going backwards.

Through a combination of stress, lack of sleep and recovery, and some injuries, my latest foray in a Stack program (right now Full Speed Spectrum) is not producing the same speeds I've previously seen.

Here's my current training speeds breakdown, and my percentiles by age breakdown:

FSSNow1.png.6de183bbe4c5b66a46d95482138aac76.pngFSSNow2.png.1985ca0b2a74518afeb1ab4b2ca652f8.png

As you can see by comparing those speeds to the below, from about 3 months ago, I'm definitely in a lull:

Stackage.png.23494d866339c33399d3abe6d6e1ba78.png

I'm not giving up by any means, I just know that I'm quick to post "look at me, I'm fast" results so it's only fair to share the struggles too.  I chalk this up to injury, lack of recovery and general overtraining...I need to be smarter.

Down, but not out by any stretch.

I feel you there Hayes!  My grit score must be negative now... it's been way too long since I've done a stack program, but some nagging tightness from baseball (and just the amount of time I'm at the fields) has limited my free time this Spring.

I've got a feeling you're going to find some speed down in NC... not too long till we find out!

This hits home for me too. I’ve stalled since my first program which was quite a few ago now. I actually just started another heavy hitter because I was not doing well with the FFS.

I reached out to Sasho and he actually gave me some swing advice to try and get over the hump. Giving me new hope, might be worth it for you too.

Pulling for you!

I'm at a crossroads here.  I'm about ready to f@ck!ng quit this speed endeavor and golf in general.

Okay, maybe I'm not.  However, it's time for me to admit that I'm not getting faster, I am getting older, and maybe I need professional help.

This is a screenshot of my completion of my first Stack training, wherein I got to 113 mph at 195g, equating to 122 driver eSpeed.

FoundationsSummary.png.868d63244a370fa5337f0003cc1c56e5.png

One year later, I'm much slower.  Granted, speed training isn't linear, but my speeds have gone the wrong direction:

CurrentSpeeds.png.d995206e1b695859097ae08d7f1685de.png

I think, when considered against my overall weight training regimen, that I'm simply overtrained and need to go back to the drawing board to learn how to train like a 40-something golfer who is "strong enough" and now after speed, versus a 20-something kid who's just trying to look good shirtless.

So, I've signed up for Fit for Golf.  Mike Carroll has also been remarkably responsive to some of my questions, and when I have a new plan and program I'll share it here, as well as any particular insights he may offer.

June 16 I fly out to California for a family vacation, then I get back to PA and get ready to move to Ohio.  I'm viewing that as an opportunity to do a "hard reset" on my training and speed goals.

Obviously, I'm highly highly discouraged right now.  Down.  Hopefully, not out.

I feel this. I feel I have been slower this year even with the off season training, but I think some of that is I have been thinking about swing mechanics a bit lately. But I do feel the focus needs to be on speed training and not as much strength for me personally. Wish you the best on what comes next.

I think you'll find your speed again this weekend right after I bomb one by you...

Well, if I can figure out how to hit the dang ball before then!

Keep that head up Hayes.  Sounds like a short break and reset is just what you need to get rolling again.

My first question is always, what is your goal with speed? Are you not satisfied with your distance? I see a lot of golfers who focus on speed and numbers, versus understanding their bodies and where they can make the biggest impact. I recently saw a 5-6 hcp golfer add 10 yards to his drive through a personalized program and understanding of his body, he was weak in his glutes. This allowed him to focus on a couple areas and then adjust his swing to help with his overall game.

Let me know if you have any questions?

I have; I actually traded messages with him, ended up sending him some swing video, and got his assessment.  He shared a few nuggets that will be valuable but overall didn't arrive at anything earth-shattering.

I've also been swapping emails with Mike Carroll, and his assessment seems to be that I'm significantly overtraining and sabotaging my speed training.  It would explain a lot, to say the least.

I'll keep updating as I chart out a way ahead, but as I said, with vacation and a move coming up for the next 6 weeks, I'm basically about to do a hard "back to the drawing board" reset and renew my training and speed pursuits in August.

Not surprised by what Mike said. Makes a lot of sense. Might be a good time to focus on something 180 on the spectrum

Yeah, this is a study in humility and frankly kind of embarrassing to post here since I've basically laid out a history of training that ultimately hasn't worked.  Frankly, I'm glad I have this forum as a decent place to share highs and lows without being shunned or ridiculed.  Hopefully as I begin to get some expert advice to train smarter I'll have a speed bounce-back story to share here.

I actually did an "In-Season" Fit for Golf workout this morning, and it was awesome.  Got a good workout in and was done in 35 minutes...my normal workout was taking 90+.

Its all good man. We are here for each other! Totally on the workout side. After the off-season I moved to the power plan and 30-40 minute work outs were much less taxing. Good luck. Hope to see you back up to speed after your body recovers. 🙂

What is your recovery like? How are you sleeping? How’s the diet (don’t means fat loss/biking, etc) but rather your caloric intake in relation to your training and making sure you are feeding the body? What about hydration?

What supplements if any are you taking?

At the very least look at that extra hour, time in there to hit the range or putting green get some golf work in.

Thanks for asking.

I am sure there are plenty of days where I could do for more sleep.  Overall I'm on a 2,400 calorie diet with plenty of protein and sufficient carbohydrates.

The supplement routine includes creatine and protein shakes, along with vitamin supplements including zinc, D3, Active B Complex, Vitamin C, and fish oil.

Once I do get to my next duty station I do intend to get a medical appointment and some blood work and check my testosterone levels.  I do feel pretty sluggish overall lately.  But, if I've overtrained as much as is being suggested to me, that would spike my cortisol levels and cause that sluggish feeling.

Blood work is key. Somethings to consider adding to help with recovery would be tart Cherry, ashwagands and magnesium glycinate.

Most people aren’t overtrained, they are under recovered.

Ok, Chapter 2 begins.

Still digging out from moving boxes, and I’m not sure when I’ll next get on the course, but I’m getting back to the gym and speed training this coming Monday.  The plan is to start fresh, and after several emails back and forth with Mike Carroll of Fit for Golf, we’ve decided I was very likely significantly overtraining and sabotaging my speed training as a result. The new plan is start light and easy and slowly increase intensity as my speeds pick up.

A new Stack baseline session today has me starting in familiar territory:

Come Monday, I dive into Full Speed Spectrum and the Fit for Golf “In Season” training program.  Let’s get it!!!

  • 3 weeks later...

My return to the gym and speed training has been a mixed bag so far.  From a speed training perspective, my training speeds are still well below where they’ve been in the past, and I’m running into a really curious phenomenon where my Monday speeds are VASTLY slower than Wednesday and Friday.  Kind of counterintuitive…you’d think I’d be well-rested…but instead I’m 8-10 mph across board slower on Mondays!

I have a working theory that I may actually be gluten intolerant.  M-F I eat very clean and gluten-free, but on the past two weekends I’ve had a couple beers and less diet conscious, and lo and behold on Monday I’m completely fatigued from a speed standpoint. (Monday seems to come with a lot of intestinal distress too.) This weekend I’m going to stick with the diet and hopefully not see that Monday fall off.  I’ll post an update with speed progress next week.

I’m also going in to the doc in 3 weeks and getting the full lab panel…kind of wondering if my blood work might reveal a cause behind my fatigue levels.  I take a thyroid pill every day; maybe the dose is off.

More to follow on this odd journey for swing speed I find myself on…

Great post. I see you are pretty dedicated to this journey and wish you the best. I can relate on the beer and intestinal distress part. An interesting connection in your theory on the speed performance piece being affected by your diet. I would factor your metabolic rate in there too.

I am wagering that you will hit those speeds on Monday.

Yeah, it’s been quite the odyssey and a pretty humbling one at that.  I’ve had to rather publicly acknowledge that I’m not the fitness guru I thought I was, and a lot of my training activity was actually detrimental to my speed goals.  Hopefully anyone following along can learn from my mistakes as I go back to the drawing board and try to get back to where I was, and beyond.

... Two quick observations. The 1st is everything goes through your gut. EVERYTHING. Improper diet and a myriad of other problems can arise from an unhealthy gut. So no more hot dogs and beer/soda at the turn.  😱

... The 2nd is what I found in my speed training, was an unnatural movement produced unnatural results. I understand the concept of speed training but as an athlete my entire life, it didn't work for me and actually had the opposite and wrecked my natural swing. (Before I say more, if speed training works for you and it does for some, good for you!!!)  But as simple as it sounds, I think a more natural approach is to just take faster swings. Without a ball, just take your normal swing, then try and incrementally swing faster and faster while maintaining your natural rhythm and balance. Speed training proves we can all swing faster if we just try. My method won't add 10 mph more swing speed, but it can increase your swing speed and more importantly add distance because you are maintaining your natural swing and hitting the center of the face. Center contact was something that really suffered when I was speed training because I just was swinging harder in order to swing faster. My fault for sure but it is easy to do.

... Again, I am not trying to talk anyone out of speed training, I am just offering an alternative if speed training didn't work for you.

Thanks @chisag…I’m always excited to see you post in this thread…adds some intelligence and insight for once! 😂

That said, I can honestly say I was playing my best when I was at my fastest.  Having less club into greens will do that, but I also found that swinging with faster intent made it harder for me to get in my own way with a jumble of swing thoughts.

Honestly, if I was to put a title on this chapter of my golf improvement journey, it would be “something ain’t right here” and by that I mean physically.  I’m really trying to understand and learn how I’ve lost basically 10 mph of clubhead speed in about a year.  I’m hoping I just really overtrained and it will come back in time.  We’ll see.

... I mean, this is an equipment forum so I get shiny new clubs are alluring but as athletes, the pursuit of excellence happens in our bodies and brains more than out of our wallets. I applaud anyone trying to improve through physical conditioning, diet and improving their technique. I have enjoyed following your journey and really wish speed training had worked for me because at age 70, every mph makes a difference. Speed training obviously worked for you and I hope you get back to your previous form. 👍

... I have been using the Golf Grade Fit Kit to improve my strength, flexibility and add a little distance for about 3 months now. I chose this one because it was on sale LOL and I was already using bands and these were just an upgrade with handles. I have selectively picked a few more exercises on top of what I was already doing and it has really helped. I am not advocating this system over any other strength and flexibility system or any program that will help get in or stay in better shape. Doing anything to maintain or hopefully improve our physical condition as we age is an absolute must. As much for life in general as our golf games.

Not sure if this is appropriate here. But I had a mini stroke 10 years ago. And my left side hand strength really seemed to took the brunt of it. Never thought to much about it until I brought this up during one of my tour striker academy visits. So they created a few drills to help me build it up again.. as my right hand was really over powering my motion. I’ve spent the last 4 months hitting 1/2 shots and chips with my left hand only. Low and behold this has built up much of the strength I’ve lost. Now it feels like my left hand is the steering wheel that controls the face and angle. And the right now is the pusher of speed. It’s taken some work on my part. Frustrating at times for sure. But going from 210 off the tee to 250 is a huge bonus for me. Just takes a good teacher to work on your weakness. And develop that into a strength again

  • GolfSpy AFG changed the title to Getoffmylawn's Swing Saga: Episode IV, Pride & Punishment

So, it's not going well.

Let me take this time to remind everyone, I once was reasonably fast, and it wasn't that long ago.  As evidence, here's a mid-stream snapshot of my Stack driver eSpeeds during a Neural Drive program...

After a move and getting back into the swing of things (pun intended), here are the same metrics today, roughly 9 months later...

Yeah, that's a 10 mph loss in swing speed, and I can't tell you why.

The theory had been that I was overtraining, and I probably was.  I've since purchase a Fit for Golf subscription, and it's doing wonders for my overall health and body composition...I'm down to 179 pounds and came in at a decent 13% body fat at my last assessment.  But, the speeds aren't there.

This Thursday I go in for a full suite of blood work...testosterone levels, cholesterol, thyroid, you name it.  Way back in 2011 I complained to the doc of extremely high fatigue and overall abysmal energy levels, and I was then diagnosed with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (immune system attacking my own thyroid) and given a little pill to take for the rest of my life.  Given that my overall symptoms are very similar, I'm hoping this is as simple as I need a new dosage of thyroid meds.  Suffice it to say, something ain't right, and I'm looking for answers.

So, fellow spies, forgive me if I bare my soul on the forum as I try to figure out where the hell the MPH went.  Meanwhile, I watch this, a lot, because I'm not giving up...
