Game improvement irons for high swing speed high handicaps.

Recommended Posts

I am in the market for my first real set of irons and I am running into some issues. I have been fit multiple times by club specific and high end fitting centers as have came to the conclusion no one speaks the same language. I swing my 7 iron at 90 mph and this is not out of control swing is pushing 100. I am newish to golf but the swing has been consistent in my fittings.  So I don’t mind game improvement irons but I don’t want a 200 yard 7 iron which is what I hit the t300 I was fitted into. So just looking for advice. Thinking about trying a better club ie players and just focusing on getting better. Ideas comments opinions?

i’m in a very similar position to you. i started golfing a few months ago with hand me down clubs and i have a high handicap but exceptionally high swing speed. i swing my 7i 105-110mph.

the first fitter i went to heard my handicap and immediately fit me for GI irons. like you, i don’t see any reason to have a 215yd 7i.

my advice to you is to truly take stock of how seriously you want to take getting better. if you just want to play some recreational golf, GI irons will definitely mask a lot of mishits and will allow you to enjoy the game.

what i decided to do was get fit for clubs that my game can grow into. if you’re dedicated to getting better, that route is going to serve you for the next handful of seasons at least.

You probably will be better off on a players set since your SS is so fast and that would cause some odd flyers. ON top of that, if you are committed to getting better, learning on hard to hit clubs will teach you (or frustrate you so much you want to quit).

Let's see here.  Two new to golf members hitting 200+ yard 7i's..and not wanting that distance.  The only time my 7i's have ever seen 200 yards is gutted on downhill, bone dry, fairways 😆.  To be quite honest, I'm not sure what to recommend based on this information.  If multiple fittings, by multiple fitters, have identified GI design irons, then odds are that fits you best.

ping g410 had me about 215 carry with a 7i. titleist t100 had me about 195.

i’ll always hit the ball long, no matter the club. i just didn’t need the additional distance and help getting the ball in the air that GI irons provide.

additionally, i felt like i never would’ve learned to become a good ball striker.

i equate it to wood vs metal baseball bats. you can hit both of them 400 feet, but the wood will make you a better hitter.

Not sure what answer you want. I would suggest reading this article:

If you want players irons communicate that desire with the fitter.

There's a lot of folks who would love to have too much distance problems.  Your last point is interesting and is a question/discussion that has come up now and then.... does forcing yourself to game a "players" category iron actually make you a better ball striker?  Do we tend to get sloppy in swing mechanics when playing with garden tools? 🤔

I plan to do just that this winter, but with the caveat that I want he (or she) to recommend what they feel best fits my swing - especially if it is not a borderline call.

the clubs alone won’t make you better. but if you do the work to find the sweet spot consistently on a smaller head, that’s where the payoff is.

with GI irons you can keep getting away with contact that’s “good enough”

One fitter had a GI T300, one Ping g410, one PXG 0311P players, last one Mizuno JPX 921 Tour. So split 50/50. Sorry for the confusion.

driver 270 carry

3 wood 250 carry

hybrid 230 carry

7 iron target is targeted by me at 175 to 180

I think you are focusing on the wrong number. The number on the bottom of the club is completely irrelevant. It doesn't matter if it says 7, 8 or 9 to get to the yardage as long as you know which of your clubs goes that far.

A good fit will fill in the gaps to fit the high and low end of your bag to avoid overlaps.

Look for consistency, similar strikes, similar flight, and smallest dispersion on landing area - distance isn't the main focus. If a Game Improvement iron provides the best metrics and tightest dispersion then it helps smooth out any flaws that exist. If you get the same dispersion with a players cavity back then go for that.

Golf is simple - people are complicated.

High swing speed here. The question is do you make good contact with the ball. Game improvement irons could be a good fit. Curious to see what 7i y’all are hitting 200+ though because it’s got to be close to 24* if that’s the case.....

If you don’t want a 200 yard 7i just make a 3/4 swing.

In all seriousness though this distance you hit each one if not the key, it’s ensuring your gapping is correct through the bag.

For example I’m not *quite* as fast as you are but when I was fit for #CCC4 I went with a set GW (49* bent to 48*) and a specialty GW at 52*. This way I have consistent gaps through my bag and can have a club for any shot. Your 200 yard 7 iron will be just fine as long as your 8 iron isn’t 150.

Good luck with whichever direction you go in!

Impressive. Being a high handicap where are your struggles? Overall there the numbers look great, is consistency and issue or just another part of the game?

i struggle a lot off the tee because with the longer clubs i have a ton of trouble rotating the club face square at impact. as a result i lose a lot of strokes due to playing my second shot from the woods or having to drop bc i’m OB

approach shots and my wedges are actually the strongest part of my game

im trying out a driving iron and working with a coach to get my left wrist turned to start my downswing. i’m hoping to have a driver in the bag by the time next season rolls around. i think the HC will come down quick from there

Here’s what I would think about, given my 7 iron carry is 190:

1. Play with the length of your clubs, especially in the metalwoods. I play my clubs .5” short. You find the center of the face more, clubhead speed drops, shots don’t go as far (which means misses don’t go as far either).

2. Get the lofts checked. Often times a 7 iron may carry 200, but the spin numbers and descent angle aren’t ideal for how we use a 7 iron. Distance doesn’t matter as much as those two. Whether it goes 160 or 190, I want my 7 iron to have some stopping power. I play all my irons 1* weak.

3. Get lessons. I once had a fitter tell me, “you’re going to become a really good golfer when you can learn to hit your pitching wedge 135 yards”. A normal pitching wedge is about 145-150 for me. As the great Earl Woods once told a young Tiger, “swing as hard as you can, so long as you can guarantee you hit the center of the club face”. If a fitter is pointing you towards GI irons, you can probably benefit from swinging slower and improving your ball striking. You can always get faster as you improve.

That is my concern with gapping.
hybrid is 235

it 7 iron is 200 or even 190

6 would be 215 or 205

5 would be 230 or 220

so no 4.
then I will need a Pitching Gap approach sand and lob wedge to cover 160 and in my eyes with my poor shift game is not ideal.

Most pros are carrying 4 wedges nowadays.

Set PW and set Gap/Approach are the lofts of what 9i and PW used to be. Tiger is one of the only players I know of not using a Gap wedge because his PW is 49 deg. Again, the number doesn't matter - gaps matter, landing angle and stopping power matter.

Lots of good advice from the others for you.

I know this is something I’ll be doing (will have 5 for next season) taking the 4 iron out of the bag. Love the club but need the versatility lower with a 48*.

I'm not quite at 5, but I'm at 4, based on the Vokey wedge  fitting tool, which also is the same that my fitting at TPI produced last year.   I have a  PW at 43 and have ordered a SM8 48 (jet black of course) to go along with the SM7 54 and 58 I already have.

PW is 45 and then vokey SM7s @ 52/56/60....I am still amazed I have been able to play well without something in between. The debate this off season is try to get a 48 in the SM7 or go with the 790 set....kind of leaning vokeys way

My take on this...  It depends WHY a player is a high handicap as to whether GI clubs are a benefit over blades etc.  If they hit it out the middle every time, but they aim badly, 3 putt everything, and have poor strategy then even the most forgiving clubs won't help.

If they struggle with making good, or at least consistent, contact then SGI clubs can help.

I fully agree plus different shaft options can help you get the ball in the air if that is an issue. However I also are not a fan of strong lofts. Mizuno 919 hotmetal and the Cobra F-Max are two that offer weaker lofts 44-45* on PW and 30-31.5* on 7 irons.

What you might want to do is 6-AW(50*)  and then add 3 addition wedges to cover from100yrds to AW length.

The worst I have found with strong lofts are Taylormade. However it is interesting to read the reviews that say that even though they are strong lofted they do not necessarily go further.

Thank you all. I think I will be going one more time to try some better players clubs and make the decision this week. I strike the clubs well and height is not an issue as I currently fly my 7 135 high. I loose strokes off the tee and on approach shots so iron play of about a 10 or less handicap at least that is what most people I play with or go get lessons with tell me. I guess I’m looking for permission to by a better club. Haha

Great! Now you have some insights on what to look for as you try new clubs.

PW is 45 and then vokey SM7s @ 52/56/60....I am still amazed I have been able to play well without something in between. The debate this off season is try to get a 48 in the SM7 or go with the 790 set....kind of leaning vokeys way

Yeah, I’m counting on that 48 to come close to replacing the A wedge i had in the MAVRIK.  It was 47 i think snd it was my fsvorite club in the set.  I was automatic with it from 80 yards (3/4 swing) to 105 yards (full swing). I mean if i didn’t get it with on 10 to 15 feet from those distances, it was very unusual.
