PXG 2011 Irons

Going for my first review here. Call this time zero.

I recently was in search for new clubs that had a more player’s look to them compared to my TM Speedblades and went and got fitted. Fitter ended up fitting me into the PXG 0211s with KBS TOUR Stiff, which I hit beautifully at the fitting. Of interest, my speedblades were retrofit to me ( I bought a used set to upgrade from my 30 yr old hand me down) to XS FST 125 shafts and 3*up in lie. My fitter noted that the lie on my speedblades was actually still STD and that it still needs to be more upright based on my divot pattern. I did have some swing changes, but went I went to my prior fitter to test some players irons a month prior (didn’t buy at the time), he missed that I needed more adjusting and just told me to aim better. 🤨

I didn’t realize it was a progressive set until I read more after the fitting, but I am ok with that. Some help at the top of the bag is nice. For those who don’t know, these are PXGs cast clubs for the peasants that can’t afford the screws. They still have the COR2 material and a thin face. To be honest, I like the no weight screw look better. Sadly, I didn’t get the joy of unboxing as my fitter checked lies, lofts and put Lamkin Sonar + midsize grips on them for me. One other issue I am having is I have asked my fitter twice for my specs so I can have them on record. All I get is radio silence. I guess it is time or a geometry lesson later.

With the progressive set, there is more offset in the 4 iron, but at address it isn’t terrible.  5 on down looks great to the eye  I am excited to get these on the course next week and see how they perform.

Good luck with them!

I recently switched to 0211s when I saw the Summer sale - no fitting, just an impulsive club ho splurge 😜

Got them with the stock graphite Mitsubishi MMT shafts .. which seem to suit me pretty well .. and so far I am really liking these clubs 👍

Day 1 at the range not so good. Blame mats and not hitting irons for 3 weeks and piss poor range balls.  When I do hit them solid they do fly and a great feeling. I will say the coating on the face doesn’t seem to hold up to range balls. Will see long term what that means.

Solid strike with the GW.

Cross posting, apologies if this is not allowed (please let me know and I can delete) as I'm new to the forums and trying to quickly gather info:

I've been seriously considering these irons now that the price point is $89 per club. It seems this discount is set to end on 9/30 so I'm trying to gather info super quickly.

My current set is a nearly 10-year old set of Ping clones (I was young and stupid, sorry) and I've found that they tend to be very accurate and forgiving but I'm hitting ~20 yards shorter than my friends with similar playing ability.

The fitter is open now near Seattle, does anyone have insight into how that process works? Compared to something like Mizuno JPX 9XX Hot Metal or Sub 70 irons how do they fare? Is there anything else I should be considering along with the PXG 0211? Are they a good choice for a mid-handicapper?

Any insight on the above greatly appreciated!

I haven't hit the sub70 irons and i did hit a hotmetal 919 indoors on a sim a few months back but not on grass. This is a progressive set so it has built in forgiveness in the long irons. The spin rates are lower. I have a higher launch but that is due to a shaft and stiffness change from my prior gamers. You will likely get a distance boost with any of the new options now as the tech has gotten better in 10 years (and the lofts have decreased, my set 10 yrs about would be a 3-PW set instead of a 4-GW). if you go through a PXG rep, the fitting is free and at this price point go for it. These did feel better than the New Level Forged I tried during my fitting. I am a high handicapper and loved these during my fitting. Hope this helps.

Just ordered the 0311X 2 DI as well today. While I couldn't get it in the same shaft as my irons, I did get it in a low spin graphite. Here is hoping it suits me. Been looking for a fairway finder. Going out for a round with these irons on Sunday. Will report back on how they treat me. Hopefully better than my last range session 😝

Took these out on the course today. Sadly my driver and short game let me down. I didn’t strike the best but when I did these things performed. I hit two great 4i shots, which I used to never do. As well, I had one nice drive with the 4i on a short par 4. After shanking a drive on a long par 3, (sadly with the 4i), I hit the PW to within 15 ft (still three putted, gah). The short irons are dead money, but you do need to know how to put a good swing on them. On one par 3, I didn’t with the 7i and it was ugly into the pond. On off-center hits, I didn’t  loose much distance and the height is good. You still can get a feeling in your hands when you miss hit which is nice. I had great shots with nearly every club today, which is a confidence boost. I have playing with A 15-20 wind for some of the day and these seemed to cut through it and did not ballon. The lower spin is somewhat evident if you don’t hit the green, you can get some nice roll. Most shots into the green was one hop and stop. Such a sweet feeling. These clubs after this round has shown me what I need to work on and what they can do when hit properly. I can’t wait to get back out Saturday. May try for a short course round earlier to test them out exclusively and maybe try for some pictures.

EDIT: I should note that I played this course 8 weeks prior and this time shot 8 strokes better. maybe it was the irons, who knows considering my 5 week layoff from golf.

Interesting you said the finish isn't holding up too well from the range practice. I have seen Gen 1 and Gen 2 irons from players and they look like the finish doesn't wear the best over time as well.

Ya, that could have been my poor striking or just crappy range balls and mats. after my round yesterday things were better and the finish seemed to hold up. The rest on the head it solid and the fact you are hitting a ball  at 70-90 mph, things will wear in due time. After a round, i would say that what i may have been seeing was new club break in as they seemed to hold up just fine. Don't let that scare you away.

I've got a few rounds and a little range time in, and I'm not seeing any significant wear nor dulling of the finish. Ball cover scuff marks, sharpie transfer from the ball, etc all seem to clean off easily, too. And yeah - very happy with the performance of these!!

Went out and played the private course on a member for the day certificate (witch hollow). Beautiful course, don’t know how I can pull a trigger on a membership though.

To the irons. Performed really well today. Hit some solid shots (MyRound pro isn’t loading so I can’t pull my favorites). Working on flatting my swing so things weren’t perfect by it about 70% solid ( I did shank two 6Is on par threes that cost me) My 4i is starting to become my favorite club. Looking forward for my DI to come in to see if that carries through. Shot of the day was a 120 yard par 3. Pulled my GW to about 15 feet. Sadly three putted as there was a back slope behind the hole 🤔(always read the whole green).

Hit several other great shots. An 8i over a pine tree to within 20 ft on a par 5 from 150, a PW just off the green on a par 3, pin high from 140 downhill and a 4i just short of the green almost 200 out on a par 4 ( went 4i/4i to keep my ball in play. Drive with 4i got plugged otherwise I would have gotten another clubs worth of roll )

Overall am over the moon with these. If it wasn’t for my dr/3w/3H issues causing me to lose balls or leave me in terrible positions off the tee, I would have shot a personal best.  ( putter was on fire and had 33 putts only)

Next round likely will be only iron play to see if I can score lower.

Liked the irons so much. Got their DI. Feels great and looks nice at address if you don’t mind the bulk. Likely going out Wednesday to test it while hitting more irons.

Had a range session today. These irons are starting to become point and shoot. I love them. Also first time with the DI and once I got used it was a middle. Went straight to slight draw consistently. Rolled out to 200 ( likely farther since I was on the grass and hitting across the range to it). Looking forward to some steady improvement with these. Also got my Arccos in to track my progress better.

here are some pictures of the clubs at address with balls. Black shaft is DI.

NTC has helped me. I have occasional shank for skull but for the most part they are becoming consistent. I noticed I can’t hit them well off mats but do great on grass. Will see what Arccos says.

Rough round today, frigid. I still love the irons but my swing is mostly out of whack of late. Too many thoughts. Still very little wear on the clubs and when I do make solid contact they are like poetry in motion.

Had two not-so-great short iron shots in my last round but where the 0211s unquestionably helped them (helped me) from being worse....

First a thinned 8i that probably shudda gone nowhere but flew on-target just landed maybe 12-15 yards short; and then a gripped-down 9i off the toe that also flew on-target just 5-10yds short...

Yep happy with these guys!

Another round in the books and these irons are mostly money when hit well. I hit 5i/6i to 12 ft. DI/4i (205 out) to 15 ft. Sticking with these for the long haul. If I can nail down consistency, these will be money. 9i into the wind over water to 18ft.

All in all, happy with mine so far. They look great, they feel great in hand. I've only made it out for 1 round, and I was swinging HORRIBLY. When I made solid contact, it was solid contact and a ton of backspin on the shorter irons.

I'm curious about distance - I went back to PXG to hit on the monitor and do a gapping session, and was hitting the 7 iron I bought a good 20 yards shorter than the one I was fitted with. How concerned should I be there? When it comes down to it I'm fine with the distance I'm getting but I was expecting more, and worry the fitting was skewed somehow.

That is interesting you bring that up about the 7i. I just get a trackman session yesterday and was barely hitting my 7i farther than my 9i. Was your fitting outdoor or indoor? Weather could play a role. During my fitting i was hitting into a 20mph wind so my optimized numbers were about 165 even though i know they weren't going that far. I have noticed that on the course, my club numbers seem a little low compared to what I would expect. I just figured that was due to doing to a stiff shaft from x-stiff on my prior set. Now i just found out from the guy I did my trackman session with, that based on my static measurements, my clubs should be 1 1/4" longer. Like you I am slightly concerned now. For your concern, all depends on conditions I guess. Has your swing changed since your fitting?? Glad you got some good contact in with these as they look pretty when they go.

Mentioned in other threads but these were chunk city or snap hooks from anywhere but the tee on Sunday. Did hit some real nice solid drives with the 4i but could not get anything going. Tried a wider stance on the course as a suggestion from a pro i met with last week and I think that caused all sorts of issues. Need to take some time to evaluate what the stance change did and correct it before another round. The 4i is still my favorite club. I have never said that about a long iron before.

After some swing thought changes, played a practice round and had great results. These are going to be keepers unless I win a contest. Here are images of a couple shots.

haha. I should preface this was a practice round. The first nine iron image was a provisional after I hooks the original. Went back to what the pro said and threw that dart. I was shocked as well. Came off as a nice baby draw which from my setup (open club face as address and slightly weak right hand) surprised me. Same thought with the 6i and wow.

Dropped a couple dimes yesterday with these during my round. Only took one photo of the 9i shot. Had this for birdie from 8ft but missed it. Wonderful shot into the fog. The other shot was a 8i into a par three I usually blow up on. Had my best 9 hole  round to date and these clubs played a part in that despite not having the best ball striking day. Hit balls not so solid but kept them straight in the early part of the round.

Starting to feel more comfortable with these clubs, getting it dialed in a bit more. I keep being surprised how much backspin is generated, even a 5-iron into a green tends to leave a pretty decent-sized pitch mark and spin back.

I've also only really played in wet conditions. Will be playing Chambers Bay on Friday, time for a real test.

Yeah! I had a thin, low 9i the other day into a green.. that was not super soft.. and it still made a pitch/spin mark.

Which was lucky as off the back of the green is trouble!
