Testers Wanted (5)

There’s something about RAW wedges that elicits a mixed bag of reactions from golfers. Some swear it gives them more spin—that’s a topic for another day—some say they prefer the look of shiny chrome, tour satin or jet-black finish. Remember the days of one choice?

At one time the options were so few, many took to the home version of RAW by soaking wedges in Coke and other methods to get them to rust. The last few years have seen many OEM’s offer a RAW version of their wedges. With Cleveland Golf having successfully launched the new RTX Zip Core wedges in the summer, it now is offering the wedge in the popular RAW or it is officially called Tour Rack finish.

So, we’re going to let you tell us if raw is better.

Current wedges played: Cleveland rtx4 tour satin 50,54,58

Appeal of RAW wedge: the concept of rust equating to more spin... never tried any raw clubs and I would be curious to see if I noticed a difference on spin on all types of shots

Cleveland RTX4 Tour Raw 50*/10, 54*/10, 56*/6 low, and 46* Titleist Vokey SM4 brushed finish

I've been playing golf (semi-heavily) now for about 2 years and am by no means an expert. My first set of wedges were a set of hand-me-down, chromed out Adams Golf wedges and was instantly not a fan. I upgraded to the RTX4 Tour Raws for one of my first big golf club investments and have loved them so far. The rusted finish, for me, has been a huge confidence booster. The darker finish contrasted with the stark white ball zeros in my focus when taking short/long shots around the greens. Also, I've noticed that the finish helps to hide minor blemishes in the face from continued use. An additional awesome but strange aspect that I love about the raw finish is the actual texture of the wedge head. I hope I'm not alone on this, but I enjoy becoming familiar with my clubs and holding them by the head prior to taking shots. The tactile texture of the finish is immensely different than the polished/brushed faces such that it feels warmer and softer to the touch versus other irons/wedge I've used. The 'feel' of the metal's texture is definitely a psychological thing for me, but it adds to the confidence boosting nature of the raw wedges.

Hope to be considered for testing the new wedges! Would love to get that Titleist out of my bag :)

Cheers,

Ryan

The Zipcore Raw Wedge is super appealing because; 1.) The style looks really awesome!  2.) I feel that the finish allows more accuracy compared to others and this would allow for a better feel on the approach shoots and around the greens.

I’ve used raw once and enjoyed the spin and less glare, the CBX2 are great but would love to get some more spin than what they give me

I have always wanted to try out a Raw wedge that rusts, but haven't wanted to need to replace a wedge that often. Would be interested to see the difference in spin and stopping power as the face continues to rust.

I'm from Indianapolis, IN now living in Avon, I'm about a 12 handicap and have been playing for about 25 years-ish. I played in High School, but didn't take it too seriously, wishing I had now, lol. Now with 2 young kids, I get to play about once a week, and try to hit the range one other time a week. I'm kind of obsessed again right now and just want to improve, bought my irons in August after playing TM Burners for 10+ years, I have the P770's on order, got to use the Golf Galaxy 90 day play to return the 790's and get the 770's and they let me keep them until the 770's come in, though I don't think they thought it would be November before that happened😄 Have downloaded the 18 Birdies app, and have really enjoyed both the GPS and online instruction tools. Love listening to NPG and reading all of the reviews.

Driver: Callaway Diablo Octane 9 Deg, with a Project X 6.0 Stiff Flex Shaft

Odyssey O Works #9 Putter Super Stoke Grip

Titleist Pro V1, because a course near me sells them in mint condition used for $30 a dozen. Also really enjoyed the Snell MTB Black golf ball.
