From my post: A theoretical question especially for those in 2 categories: slower swing speed and higher ss numbers with the yellow or green sticks. Since the SS is higher for those lighter sticks, wouldn't it make a difference in going to lighter shafts and drivers? Yes I know the common answer is go get fit - which I have been, but just curious. FYI for those not using SuperSpeed sticks, the difference between the three sticks for me, at least, is about 8 mph of swing speed. Kenny B Posted October 8, 2020 Share Posted October 8, 2020 IMO, it depends. I know that lighter shafts should be easier to swing fast. In my SS test a couple of years ago, I was sent the Senior set, even though my driver was heavier than SSG uses for determining which set to send. The Yellow stick was good at first as I was getting use to the protocols, but I found that I eventually swung the Green stick faster. SSG was nice enough to send me the Red stick which I used when I started Protocol 2. I also find that lighter shafted driver doesn't fit my swing very well. I only gain maybe 2-3 mph, and I lose accuracy. Typically, light drivers have a lower swingweight. I am currently using a lighter driver (Wilson D300), but I changed to a heavier weight in the bottom and added a lead strip to get the swingweight up to D2. DPattGolf Posted October 8, 2020 Share Posted October 8, 2020 I have done a little bit of testing personally and I am about 5-7mph faster with a 60 gram extra stiff driver shaft than a 70 gram one with minimal to no accuracy loss. My limited understanding is that you want to play the lightest that you can control and be consistent with. It is possible to theoretically build a lightweight driver head with a lightweight shaft, but build it longer to get the swing weight up. In my SS protocols 1&2, I eventually came pretty close to the same speed between Yellow and Green, but still a far cry from the Blue. Currently I'm in the low to mid 80's with my driver, which has a 65g Alta shaft. And of course the 410 is one of the heaviest out there - so was just curious why drivers and shafts aren't lighter. Shafts are getting lighter. I'm seeing a lot of 40-55g shafts in senior and regular flex, but the head has to be light as well. In the past very light shafts were limited to Ladies drivers, but apparently the technology is much better and stiffer flexes can be made in very light shafts now. I recently got a Distanza shaft for my Ping G400 MAX 40gr. after trying my friends 400 MAX with the same shaft. All I can say is I really don't know how much SS I got back from playing stiff/firm flex, but I can honestly say it was substantial. When I first installed it, the head just seemed like it would wobble like crazy, but when you swung the club it was as stable as can be. Don't know who makes the shaft for Ping, but damn it works.
